Fucking XL fucking bullies

My lovely older cat was sitting in the front garden in the sun. Dog comes charging around the corner, was on her instantly and had her pinned down. Apparently they have workmen in and they left the gate open. She is at the vet, her back legs are not working properly and I am waiting to hear the outcome. I shouted, hit it with the lead, kicked it and my neighbour hit it with a broom. Eventually I had to grab the collar and drag it off, knowing it might bite me. All the people who think they are lovely dogs can fuck right off.

Your poor cat, I’m so sorry.

I would absolutely be reporting the dog to the police.

Do you have any doorbell camera evidence?

Nicole1111 · 09/05/2024 20:42

So sorry I wrote dog instead of cat. It sounds like they don’t have insurance!

EnglishBluebell · 09/05/2024 21:29

😢 Those XL Bullies need to all be destroyed. Horrible monsters. Sick to death of the dumb owners saying nonsense like "It's the owners not the dog" 🤦‍♀️ Clearly no understanding of science.

Fingers crossed for a full recovery. I hope the police act

Oh poor little cat 😥I honestly hate XLs, all that "owner not the dog" thing is utter bullshit. The breed is unpredictable and horrific.

OP isn’t sure it’s an XL- I doubt it was as I don’t think the cat would’ve survived. It doesn’t matter what breed really, it’s the owners who are liable. They should train and control their dog, ensure it’s secure at all times and have insurance. Problem is these people never do, or very rarely.

I hope they cough up OP, I had third liability insurance for my Lab just in case he ever escaped and caused any type of injury or accident. I’d be mortified if he caused any injuries to anyone.

Sincerely hope your cat is ok, please let us know.

Noseybookworm · 09/05/2024 22:21

Please report the owners to the police. If the dog is an XL Bully, it has to be muzzled in a public place. They were irresponsible to have let the dog get out.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 09/05/2024 22:27

Thanks @ZestofCoffee - I am just going to tell them the cost and ask if they want to pay the vet directly. And tell them we are going through the courts if they make problems.

Absolutely do not let them get away with this. I cannot imagine the shock and terror you and your cat went thru.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 09/05/2024 23:28

Sorry if I've missed it, but did you tell the police you weren't sure if the dog is an XL bully or not, because I'm still confused as to what constitutes an XL bully.

I know it's not a breed, it's the characteristics that they're looking for, and that dog sounds like a menace.

Your poor cat.

I hope you manage to find a way to ease up your muscles.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 09/05/2024 23:39

I would still report it to the police, it is up to the dog owner to prove that it is not a dog restricted under the Dangerous Dog Act, and up to the police to prove it is.
It's based on size and other characteristics.

If indeed it is a XL Bullie, then it has to be muzzled etc. when in a public place - and yes it was in a public place before it entered your front garden.
Excuses of escaping out of house / let out by mistake by tradesmen etc. should not count.

IF they do indeed have insurance I am very surprised it does not cover this ' incident '.

I would be distraught / furious if this had happened to one of my cats.

I hope she is ok, has the Vet mentioned if there are any internal injuries ?
is she at home with you until her next appointment or is she at the Vets ?

Eastcoastie · 10/05/2024 00:14

Hope your cat is okay op. That sounds horrific.

Out of interest after reading this, I just looked up my bog standard pet insurance policy to see what 3rd party cover you get as standard. Iv included it below and it only covers harm to people however, in the exclusions it won't cover liability arising from 'trade' - maybe the neighbour should get their workmen to check their policy since they didnt secure your neighbours property by closing the gate. Anyway i really hope the neighbours just stump up.

Fucking XL fucking bullies

Atethehalloweenchocs · 09/05/2024 20:14

The owner just texted to say their insurance does not cover this kind of thing, so perhaps the dog is another type of bull breed. I have told them I will let them know when I know the costs and they can make arrangements.

Ask them to check their house insurance. Ours gives us 3rd party insurance should our dogs cause an accident.

Thanks @ZestofCoffee - I am just going to tell them the cost and ask if they want to pay the vet directly. And tell them we are going through the courts if they make problems.

I’d be pretty surprised if their insurance doesn’t cover it tbh, obviously a cat isn’t “just property” but in terms of costs it is, their dog has come into your property and caused damage.

They’re definitely responsible for the cost and it’d be covered by most standard pet insurance.

The trade exclusions are so you can’t claim damage to your own property caused by a dog you own or are in charge of.

Re the dog and breed etc. lots of dogs will see cats as prey, it’s no different to them than a cat catching mice or birds. I’ve a collie and a shepherdy type mongrel, the collie can’t be unsupervised even with my cat or he’ll get chasey.

next door has 2 pointers, they’re lovely dogs but, rescued ex hunters and they’d absolutely go for my cat given the chance. (their owner was really worried when we moved in, because her garden is secured to keep her dogs in but obviously not to keep cats out, I knew my cat wouldn’t go in and I was right)

It’s just negligence on the owners part, anything could have happened - it could have been on the roads causing traffic accidents…if you’ve workmen in you secure your dog!

Obviously if it’s a banned breed even more so…

Hope your cat is ok

ZestofCoffee · 10/05/2024 18:07

How is your cat OP?

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 10/05/2024 18:50

Op all this is just awful.
Sending you lots of love. How is your darling cat?

Atethehalloweenchocs · 10/05/2024 22:47

Hi all, it has been a long and busy day starting with elderly step dad not being able to catch his breath at 5am this morning. But I realized I meant to update this earlier and then got busy.

Kitty is home with me now, laying next to me on the sofa (she cant jump but looks at me and I carefully lift her up). She is sleeping with her her paws touching me which she loves to do anyway.

The X rays showed no fractures or dislocations, but she still cannot stand on her back legs properly. It may be soft tissue damage - the advice is to let her rest and see how it goes. She has puncture wounds in her abdomen and leg, but fairly shallow - she really put up a good fight and has a lot of broken claws to prove it. And the whole thing was pretty quick since I was right there. So, its antibiotics, painkillers, and rest for a few days, then back to the vet next week. Thank you all for your good wishes.

Called the police, they were worse than useless. they asked a lot of things I cant answer - has the dog got out before - well, it is from about a quarter of a mile away so I have no idea. Has it bitten anyone? I asked how I would know. The upshot is that the police see it as a civil matter.

I have texted the total of the bills so far to the owners, who say they will pay the vet directly. I had to pay for some things directly as it was with another vet who could do things my one cant so I told them they will have to refund me directly for that, that I have copies of all the bills and they are welcome to speak to either vet. So far they seem to be cooperating.

I dont know it it qualifies as an xl. The police told me me to look at pictures online, but to be honest it happened so quickly and I was behind the dog. And my memory, like any trauma situation, is a bit patchy - I dont remember my dogs hiding, or the bit between seeing the dog come round the corner and being in the road trying to get it off my cat. My shoulders, back and chest are all aching so I must have had to use a lot of force.

Some neighbours have been checking in - one told me that the dog had been out the week before too. So who knows if they are telling the truth about why it got out.

Anyway, thank you all, I really appreciate all your help.

Keeping fingers crossed for your lovely cat - The owners need reporting to the police and the RSPCA for a dangerous out of control dog -

RandomMess · 10/05/2024 23:01

Glad your cat should make a recovery. Usually it's the dog warden that deals with this when a person hasn't been injured.

Sadly I've been there when a lurcher type dog killed our cat on our drive as the person walking it couldn't control it.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 10/05/2024 23:22

I don't believe the RSPCA are authorised under the Dangerous Dogs Act, the Police are obiv ! and there is a very good chance the dog warden may be - depends on the Local authority and how seriously they take their ' animal law ' responsibilities.

I am so pleased kitty is alive, I was worried there may have been internal damage and that she may have slipped away overnight.

cavernclub · 10/05/2024 23:40

The owner of the dog must pay the vets bills (but I bet he / she won't)

aodirjjd · 10/05/2024 23:46

Put a complaint in with the police. An out of control dog is not a civil matter.

our local police force take this seriously from experience.

misszebra · 10/05/2024 23:51

FYI if you involve the police they may well take the dog away and have it PTS without the owners having any say.

aodirjjd · 10/05/2024 23:51

And tbh if you aren’t sure but think it might be id just ring the police back and say you think it is an XL. Get them to check!

QueenOfTheHighCs · 10/05/2024 23:55

Please do go back to the Police and ask them to investigate under the dangerous dogs offences. We had to report a dog for killing a cygnet last week and an order has now been placed on the dog that it must wear and muzzle and be on the lead in any public place.

Sparklfairy · 11/05/2024 05:58

aodirjjd · 10/05/2024 23:51

And tbh if you aren’t sure but think it might be id just ring the police back and say you think it is an XL. Get them to check!

It's so stupid that it comes to fudging what she knows to get them to do anything, they'd rather take the risk that it might not be an XL bully than check whether it is.

I have to say, if the owners are being cooperative then it probably isn't. They'd be shitting themselves if it was.

But the police telling you to look at a picture online is beyond the pale. How on earth you're supposed to be able to compare a still photo of one to the traumatic memory of what you experienced, I have no idea.

You can go back to the police and say, 'I've looked at photos like you said and I'm pretty sure they look the same, but obviously it was so fast and my priority was my cat...'

GoFaster83 · 11/05/2024 06:31

I really hope your cat recovers. My sister's cat was hit by a car and lost the use of its back legs. But after several months of crate rest she is fully recovered and back to terrorising the local wildlife (largely worms). I love bull breeds but I dislike any out of control dog. Well, no, I dislike any owner who is not in control of the animal they are meant to be responsible for. Tradespeople being in their house means nothing. If anything, that's a situation where you would be hyper vigilant and anticipate that doors may be left open. Poor wee cat. Shitty dog owners. I'm sorry you're going through this.
