We applied to Pact and Dogs Trust after Christmas and I've been stalking the West Suffolk RSPCA website, but no luck.

Can anyone recommend other reputable UK-based rehoming organisations? We're happy to travel up to 6 hours, but appreciate this could create problems with the home inspection and any post-adoption support.

I'll post our list of requirements and what we can offer as a home below in case any one can offer any advice. It's very possible we're looking for the impossible, but I'm keen to exhaust all options!

We have teens living at home, very occasional visits from primary aged and younger children (max 10x per year) and I work from home.

Our garden is secure and enclosed to a min height of 5' 8". However, we have a holiday home we spend around 10 weeks/year at with fencing of just 4' and no possibility to raise it, so a potential issue there.

No other pets. Loads of long countryside walks on our doorstep.

We're looking for a small - small/medium dog, ideally under 12kg, that would be ok with infrequent long car journeys, would be happy (after a settling in period) to be left for 3 hours about 5 times per week, gets on well enough with other dogs that they'd be ok to stay in home boarding for the odd occasion we go on a holiday or have a long day out that they can't accompany us on.

Ideally 8 years old or younger. Ideally not a puppy (I've never had a puppy, so that's just fear talking - I could probably compromise on this!) Open to a dog with health problems but not life-limiting.

All rescue suggestions and breed suggestions welcomed. Or perhaps just a reality check if needed...

Essex definitely not too far - so long as the rescues don't have a catchment area!

Those requirements don't sound unreasonable to me. Have you looked at Norfolk and Suffolk Animal Trust (Great Yarmouth)? Also worth looking at LIB Dog Rescue in Lowestoft (we adopted our dog from them). Both of these rescues are on Facebook as well as having websites. Good luck 🤞🏼

LaurieFairyCake · 24/02/2024 13:42

They don't I dont think as on their Facebook page they've mentioned someone travelling from the north

It's AARR - all animals rescue and rehome Smile

They have a Facebook page - if I can work out how to put up a photo of my two I will

OMG how have I not heard of either of those!

Just looking on the Norfolk and Suffolk animal trust website. Amazing! Thank you!

Thank you! I've found their Facebook page. Just going to get a fresh cup of tea and start looking!

I was having a little cry earlier (really missing my lovely dog who died last year and feeling discouraged) but I feel really optimistic now.

The retriever is only 2 years old - such a lovely dog

Pinchpleat · 24/02/2024 13:56

Beatrice is so beautiful! Might not like our teens, although they are generally fairly quiet. I think it's definitely worth an enquiry though.

DH would go nuts for Sandy. With my praticable head on, I think she'd be too large us. We'd only have half the boot space and a middle seat in the car available to her for long car journeys. Perhaps I'm overthinking that?

There are a few good greyhound rescue places in Norfolk that rescue from the Yarmouth track. Norfolk Greyhound Rescue are good and always need fosters if you want to 'try before you buy' and Yarmouth Homefinders. I was going to suggest Dogs Trust but you've tried there!

Turkeyhen · 24/02/2024 14:14

The only thing with greyhounds is they are larger than the OP wants which could be an issue (space in car for example) and there's the escape risk in the holiday home with low boundaries.

Pinchpleat · 24/02/2024 14:22

Update - I've emailed an enquiry to AARR. Now moving onto the Great Yarmouth rescues...

I love greyhounds, but I'd worry about them leaping over the fence!

IwishIcouldfinishabook · 24/02/2024 14:38

Oh I missed the holiday homes bit. I have a whippet from them. He's much smaller than a greyhound!

MrsOosh77 · 24/02/2024 15:14

@LaurieFairyCake Are you thinking of AA? There’s a little one up for rehoming from Kent at the moment who fits the requirements perfectly!

MrsOosh77 · 24/02/2024 15:55

Jasper is 3. Email address for enquiries is on the photo. There’s a Facebook group AA Dog rescue.

No, its AARR (all animals rescue and rehome)

Though Jasper looks lovely 😻

Yorkshireknitter · 24/02/2024 16:51

Our whippet is from Norfolk Greyhound Rescue. They seem like lovely people there and do have other breeds up for adoption sometimes.

UtterlyButterly2048 · 24/02/2024 17:01

Angel Small Paws or Silver Fox dog rescue would have suitable dogs for you. They both rehome smaller dogs. You will have to have a homecheck, as you would with any rescue and you may have to travel for a meet and greet but they do have some lovely, lovely dogs. I’m in Norfolk too (with my 11 rescue dogs) 🥰🥰

Pinchpleat · 24/02/2024 17:36

Well, I've had a busy couple of hours looking at dogs and filling in applications!

Unfortunately (well, fortunately for her!) Beatrice from AARR has been re-homed, as has Sawyer who was also on their FB and caught my eye.

There is a gorgeous cockapoo called Barney at Norfolk and Suffolk Animal Trust (can't imagine why he hasn't found a home!) I've made an application, but think there will probably be more suitable homes than ours out there for a bouncy 16 month old cockerpoo who could presumably get straight over our fences. However, there was a space on the form to let them know what sort of dogs you would be interested in if not accepted, so maybe...

I only came on here to update you all and thank you for your help but I can see there's some more suggestions - thank you - so I'll look at those now...
