We applied to Pact and Dogs Trust after Christmas and I've been stalking the West Suffolk RSPCA website, but no luck.

Can anyone recommend other reputable UK-based rehoming organisations? We're happy to travel up to 6 hours, but appreciate this could create problems with the home inspection and any post-adoption support.

I'll post our list of requirements and what we can offer as a home below in case any one can offer any advice. It's very possible we're looking for the impossible, but I'm keen to exhaust all options!

What a handsome boy!
Is he a papillon?

Pinchpleat · 03/03/2024 19:52

I did indeed @LaurieFairyCake and I will be forever grateful to you for recommending them. It already feels like he's been with us forever!

He's some sort of Spitz @ThePure , although we'll probably never know exactly what sort and what else might be mixed in there as he came in as an unclaimed stray 😢 I would guess either a German Spitz or a Japanese Spitz crossed with something else. He's got splotches like a Jersey cow, so if he asks we'll tell him he's a Jersey Spitz 😉

Edit : I meant Friesian not Jersey. (Don't worry, I'm better with dogs than cows...)

For anyone looking to rehome a dog, I recently came across this site with some very worrying comments. I hope it is acceptable to share this. Those with young children who are looking to rehome a dog, may wish to take a look.

It seems that many rescue centres now place dogs with a foster family while they are waiting for a new permanent home. This is much less stressful for the dog than being kennelled. They have 24 hour care unlike some organisations where the dogs are left alone overnight. The foster family is usually very experienced and with such close care in the family home, can pick up on any issues. Seems to be the way forward?

Hi, I may be a little late to this post but on the off chance you are still looking. I work at a dog rescue in Norfolk. I have previously volunteered at Norfolk and Suffolk animal trust, they are closing for a while to refurbish the kennels but they are good at keeping your details on file.
The smaller dogs usually get adopted much faster so you may need to do a few applications but they will remember you. What you are looking for is not at all impossible, you sound like great owners!
At the risk of getting myself into trouble, you don’t need to let them know every detail. The infrequent visits from under 10s are important, some dogs aren’t suitable for this. I don’t feel you need to mention the holiday home, as long as you know how you will keep the dog secure when away (eg- on a lead when toileting at the holiday home) 3 hours is also not too long to leave the dog (once it is settled and happy in your home) I leave mine maximum 4. I certainly don’t agree with lying at all, and it’s super important to be honest with these things, however you sound like great owners, and I don’t want you to complicate your application with smaller details.
I don’t want anyone to come across my comment though and think I’m saying it’s okay to lie on an application form, for example leaving the dog whilst you work all day would be really bad. I’m just saying a few hours is normal once the dog is secure and settled, time to rest. They get so many applications for certain dogs that you don’t want to be overlooked for small details like this, as a lot of people would take it as a given that the dog will stay at home whilst they do food shop etc, and won’t write it on the form.
