DD bought a puppy home

DD is nearly 20 and came home with a puppy this evening. We already have a 3yr old that we have had since a puppy. Our DDog is very laid back and accepted the 5mnth old puppy for now.

I’ve questioned DD around why someone has just given her an expensive puppy for free, she has said she was concerned they weren’t treating it well and persuaded them to let her take it as it was living outside.

I’ve asked about vets and papers and what food it’s eating. She bought in a bag of working adult kibble and a few tins of 1-7yrs working dog wet food?

I’ve googled the vets she mentioned and I now know they are attached to a big puppy farm and they are someone I would avoid at all cost.

so what do I do now? Give the puppy back to people who clearly don’t want him because he doesn’t meet their level for someone to pay £5k for him? Offer him to rescue at the risk they find out and demand money from me/DD as it is their property/chipped to them?

I honestly don’t know what to do in the pups best interest but also protecting us?

i don’t want a puppy in the house as I work from home in a high demanding role and our DDog is happy at home with me. I honestly don’t want to go back to the puppy days as although he is cute, he isn’t house trained and I’ll be back to work on the 2nd working in an upstairs office with the need of no distractions. I do want to do the best by him though, he is only a puppy and deserves a chance.

Sure it’s up to your DD to sort this out? Tell her the puppy can’t stay and that she needs to sort out a rescue centre for it (if they’ll take it). I’m astounded that your adult DD would do something so irresponsible (as I’m sure you are too). My goodness, what was she thinking?

Ihatemondays1962 · 30/12/2023 23:19

I agree, it's up to your daughter to find a solution. Have you asked her what she is intending to do with the puppy during the day when you need peace and quiet to work?

Rescue2024 · 30/12/2023 23:19

I sure am thinking the same! She genuinely cried the first couple of times she found out what was going on and she knows I’m very animal welfare so she just thought the best thing was to rescue him and bring him home to me!

Was he ever in a home and given back to the breeder? Or could they not get rid of him? What is he???

Such a sad story. It's for your DD to sort but this poor little pup has probably had a really tough start. Is he healthy?

Apparently her work is dog friendly so she will take him with her
ive pointed out the dogs will bond and may not want to spend the days separated but I suppose it could be a compromise?

I can’t see any work place accepting a dog that isn’t house trained though?

Too many questions here...
Who did DD meet
how does she know the dog is not being looked after
how does she know it was living outside
how did she manage to get the dog away from the ' owner '
how does a vets and a puppy farm come into it ?

Missingmyusername · 30/12/2023 23:22

😫😥poor dog

SirChenjins · 30/12/2023 23:24

I agree @OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon there’s a lot to unpick there.

OP - do you think she’s just bought a puppy from a farm? Or seen it advertised on SM somewhere?

Theimpossiblegirl · 30/12/2023 23:24

What breed is the puppy? That's the most important factor to consider right now.

TheTigerWhoCameToEatMyHusband · 30/12/2023 23:25

I did this at 16 I kept her and she lived with me until she died when I was 30. If she is willing to take responsibility I say let her keep it. My dog was my absolute best friend and saw me well into adulthood. I'm glad my parents never made me get rid of her.

DD said he was but living outside! Now I know the puppy farm name I’m not quite so sure.

he has snotty eyes and nose, keeps coughing up nothing which has been told to DD that he has recently had his jabs and kennel cough just so it might just be that? I think adult working dog food may be a factor?

I know this isn't the point of the thread, but how do you find out a vets is attached to a puppy farm?

Back to the point...I'd give the dog to a rescue, explain the situation. Puppy farms are illegal, it's unlikely they'd find out but if they do they won't have a leg to stand on.

Theunamedcat · 30/12/2023 23:28

Is he chipped?

Get a vet check ASAP (insurance first)

I wouldn't believe for a second that he's been vaccinated...he needs a vet

GrazingSheep · 30/12/2023 23:29

StarDolphins · 30/12/2023 23:33

My sister did this many years ago. She brought a red setter home that she paid a guy on a caravan park £30 for that was hitting him without really thinking if my mum would/could look after him.

We kept him after lots of reassurance that my sister would walk/feed him. She did walk & look after him (of sorts!)until she left home then my mum took responsibility.

Has she said what the plan is? What will happen if her work won’t have him there, who will train him?

Rescue2024 · 30/12/2023 23:33

Breed wise, DD believes he is purebred French bulldog. He looks more like a mongrel french bulldog bred with a shar pei through googling pictures and he is tiny for 5 months

OP posts:
Rescue2024 · 30/12/2023 23:36

I also plan to take him to our vet asap for a check over and sort his food out. It looks like the working breed adult food is for trying to bulk him out. It’s certainly not puppy milk and he isn’t house trained at all

doriangraybutimthepaintingintheattic · 30/12/2023 23:39

Keep him away from your dog! Is it parvovirus that has those symptoms?

doriangraybutimthepaintingintheattic · 30/12/2023 23:40

Ignore that. Just googled and it's totally different. Sorry. Still I'd keep him away just in case

Unluckycat1 · 30/12/2023 23:41

French bulldogs have so many health problems, a short average life expectancy, high insurance costs, are apparently one of the fastest growing dogs ending up in rescue centres :( I was going to say keep it, but they are one of the breeds I couldn't bring myself to commit to, poor things. I guess she's old enough to make her own choices though.

DD met a friend through work who then showed her the puppy at her house, he was outside with big dogs, getting knocked about.

vet/puppy farmer - I’ve spent a long time helping in rescue and the such. As soon as she mentioned a name of someone involved in breeding bulldogs I saw a red flag and googled, they are well known around here and not anyone I want any involvement with. I don’t want them anywhere near me and my family.

Unluckycat1 · 30/12/2023 23:41

Fingers crossed he is a mongrel!

We know that but that’s not this dogs fault and he could have another 10 - 12 years in him and is already on his 2nd home (! Stop gap) in 5 months

I can’t help but feel sorry for him

I'd feel very sorry for him too. (In fact, I do!) Can your daughter afford him? He could become a very expensive dog.
