DD bought a puppy home

Rescue2024 · 30/12/2023 23:09

DD is nearly 20 and came home with a puppy this evening. We already have a 3yr old that we have had since a puppy. Our DDog is very laid back and accepted the 5mnth old puppy for now.

I’ve questioned DD around why someone has just given her an expensive puppy for free, she has said she was concerned they weren’t treating it well and persuaded them to let her take it as it was living outside.

I’ve asked about vets and papers and what food it’s eating. She bought in a bag of working adult kibble and a few tins of 1-7yrs working dog wet food?

I’ve googled the vets she mentioned and I now know they are attached to a big puppy farm and they are someone I would avoid at all cost.

so what do I do now? Give the puppy back to people who clearly don’t want him because he doesn’t meet their level for someone to pay £5k for him? Offer him to rescue at the risk they find out and demand money from me/DD as it is their property/chipped to them?

I honestly don’t know what to do in the pups best interest but also protecting us?

i don’t want a puppy in the house as I work from home in a high demanding role and our DDog is happy at home with me. I honestly don’t want to go back to the puppy days as although he is cute, he isn’t house trained and I’ll be back to work on the 2nd working in an upstairs office with the need of no distractions. I do want to do the best by him though, he is only a puppy and deserves a chance.

I sure am thinking the same! She genuinely cried the first couple of times she found out what was going on and she knows I’m very animal welfare so she just thought the best thing was to rescue him and bring him home to me!

Her faith in you is very sweet. Annoying and inconvenient too I'm sure Grin but it is very sweet.

No, no, no his temp name is Roman I suppose because he roamed in… and his big brother is Reggie

Oh my goodness, my Foster son is called those 2 names. I'm going to show him this little pup in the morning. He loves dogs.

When does your Vet next open ?

and in the thought that he is not microchipped and reported as lost/stolen -

Then you want to do a Wisdom Panel dna test, apparently they are frequently ' on offer ' - a doggie forum i am on have found it to be pretty reliable.

and knowing what he actually is will help when you choose his insurance policy.

As he is not going anywhere else now, is he...

caringcarer · 31/12/2023 01:58

Get the pup insured BEFORE vet has seen him. Then you can say to the best of your knowledge he doesn't have any health issues. Once he sees the vet you might be told he has an issue, then you'd have to declare it.

Oh my heart!!! Look at those besties. 💖💖💖

WildImaginings · 31/12/2023 02:02

Definitely Shar pei in there. My dog is mixed bull breed/shar pei and this dogs face looks VERY similar to my dog as a puppy. Only difference is the ears as my dog doesn't have any Frenchie in her.

Point out to your daughter that you don't want a puppy in the house and ask her what she plans to do with it. When she has her own establishment, will she be bringing random dogs back there? I suspect not, she just assumes you will take on the responsibility.

FFS, this isn't the right teaching moment for the daughter; people need to lay off that.

The important thing is the fate of this sick and suffering animal. OP is better positioned than a teenager to solve the problem.

' DD met a friend through work who then showed her the puppy at her house, he was outside with big dogs, getting knocked about. '

So a proper friend ? or the friend of a friend ? or the friend of a colleague ?

and this friend let your dd take the dog home ?

what breed were the ' big dogs '

does ' friend ' think/believe/hope dd has bought the dog / brought it home on approval ?

as you know during Covid/Lockdown French Bulldogs were very very popular and selling for tons of money, now rescues are full of them - puppies and adults

Wtf does any of this have to do with the OP's dilemma?

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 31/12/2023 02:52

Big rope refers to the thickness of the fold of skin over their nose.

My DDog is so laid back, he even let the tenant share his sleepy pad before bed….

Oh my goodness, they are adorable!! Clearly they belong together with you, so congrats on your new addition! Grin

Puppy has had a bad start to life . If it was me I'd take him to a decent vet to get his health and diet sorted and then take him home permanently.

ThesecondLEM · 31/12/2023 05:34

I hope you have deep pockets and resilience, that poor puppy has got issues stamped on its forehead.

Get him to a vet that offers 4 weeks free insurance. This will start immediately rather than having to wait 14 days. BUT the vet can only offer it to what is deemed a healthy puppy and any concerns will be documented on his records.

Register him as a French bulldog, even though he's clearly a cross breed, he isn't tiny at all and if he's younger than your dd has been told he could potentially fit xl bully criteria (ridiculous I know). Your vet cannot confirm with regards to this so register as a frenchie.

Get him off that ridiculous food and put him on standard puppy food or a frenchie food. He is not a working breed so does not need rocket fuel, make the transition slowly, you know this already.

You are definitely keeping him, I sincerely hope it works out for you

tabulahrasa · 31/12/2023 06:38

The obvious options are, keep him or get him sorted at the vets etc and contact rescues...

Yes it’s a stupid impulsive thing to do on paper, but it’s pretty much how I ended up with my current second dog, and I’m in my 40s 🙈🤣

At 5 months you shouldn’t be looking at too long to house train him and there’s no issue at all in one dog going away to work with her from the dog’s point of view, one dog goes to work with my DP sometimes and gets taken to different places/things.

Food btw - there’s no huge differences between working food, puppy food and any other food, it’s very small differences in what’s in them, but working food is cheaper because it’s VAT exempt.

scaredofff · 31/12/2023 07:40

I'm sorry op I think congratulations are in order

He really is gorgeous x

margotrose · 31/12/2023 08:03

Congratulations on your new puppy Grin

Heyheyitsanotherday · 31/12/2023 08:10

Oh op. After reading your post and seeing the photo of one content pupster I have no advice. We are huge animal lovers here and hate to think of any animal being mistreated. I’m afraid my DD (when she’s older) would do the exact same. I’d feel the exact same as you and be very annoyed…. But ultimately I think we’d work round it and keep him 🙈 good luck! …on the plus side, you have one very kind hearted DD. 💕

Spencer0220 · 31/12/2023 08:14

Good luck!!

I just wanted to jump in and say please be kind to your DD. She may have done something misguided by bringing him home, but ultimately she will have done right by rescuing him at all.

The world needs more people like her.

I agree. I was expecting a wee thing but he's quite large in the image.

He's a looker - and being blue, I'm really surprised they couldn't sell him. There's more to this.

EdithStourton · 31/12/2023 08:37

Just to wish you luck, op - I have no actual advice that has not already been given.

We ended up with a cat thanks to DD, though she was younger than yours at the time. She came home crying about this pitiful lost animal, so I can sympathise with your predicament.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 31/12/2023 08:37

Big rope isn’t a USA breed, even in the USA it’s a puppy farm term relating to the big fold over their nose… which will be a lifetime of skin infections and breathing problems.

This, it’s not a positive.

LuckySantangelo35 · 31/12/2023 10:36

I would be fuming if my daughter brought to my house a puppy and just assumed I would absorb the expense and extra work it would create. She needs to be the one to take responsibility, not op.

Permanentlyunimpressed · 31/12/2023 11:01

Well we can see why people keep breeding these dogs, already we have all the oh how cute comments. It's not cute to me, it barely resembles a dog, conformity is awful and it will suffer every day of its life. I hope your DD has deep pockets. Has she thought about the next 15 years? Or more likely 7 or 8 with this dog, life expectancy is not good. Plans to move into a rental property for example? Her life will be limited with a dog to care for as will her housing options. No late nights out with a dog to get back to, no spontaneity whatsoever.
Please do report the puppy farm vet to RCVS though.

I personally think 7/8 is a strong expectation for this dog! I don't know many dogs that live to 15, even the healthy ones.

DewHopper · 02/01/2024 12:17

I hope that you keep him OP. He has had a horrible start to life and and needs a vet, good food and love. I would be proud of my daughter had she done this.
