DD bought a puppy home

DD is nearly 20 and came home with a puppy this evening. We already have a 3yr old that we have had since a puppy. Our DDog is very laid back and accepted the 5mnth old puppy for now.

I’ve questioned DD around why someone has just given her an expensive puppy for free, she has said she was concerned they weren’t treating it well and persuaded them to let her take it as it was living outside.

I’ve asked about vets and papers and what food it’s eating. She bought in a bag of working adult kibble and a few tins of 1-7yrs working dog wet food?

I’ve googled the vets she mentioned and I now know they are attached to a big puppy farm and they are someone I would avoid at all cost.

so what do I do now? Give the puppy back to people who clearly don’t want him because he doesn’t meet their level for someone to pay £5k for him? Offer him to rescue at the risk they find out and demand money from me/DD as it is their property/chipped to them?

I honestly don’t know what to do in the pups best interest but also protecting us?

i don’t want a puppy in the house as I work from home in a high demanding role and our DDog is happy at home with me. I honestly don’t want to go back to the puppy days as although he is cute, he isn’t house trained and I’ll be back to work on the 2nd working in an upstairs office with the need of no distractions. I do want to do the best by him though, he is only a puppy and deserves a chance.

I thought you said he was tiny, he looks huge in that picture. I'd be worried about him fitting bully criteria too.

He looks absolutely nothing like an XL Bully.

I completely agree!

Exactly, he just looks like a normal Frenchie, lol Confused

ThesecondLEM · 03/01/2024 22:40

I agree that he doesn't look xl bully, but the criteria are vague at the very least and I fully anticipate a shit show of dogs mis typed, I'm not even sure who has the final say what dogs are xl bullies. He

NoisyDachshunddd · 03/01/2024 23:19

Looks like a shar pei cross.

if you can get insurance that’s one less worry but make absolutely sure it’s cast iron.

if you can’t, are you both ok to be on the hook for potentially approaching £10k of vet bills for breathing issues and skin folds plus anything behaviour-wise owing to having been neglected as a young puppy?

NoisyDachshunddd · 03/01/2024 23:21

Also you mentioned eye issues. Get the vet to check for entropion, ectropion, and cherry eye.

NoisyDachshunddd · 03/01/2024 23:24

The fact your DD doesn’t really have friends yet this person has seen fit to fence her a dog is also concerning.

Well we can see why people keep breeding these dogs, already we have all the oh how cute comments. It's not cute to me, it barely resembles a dog, conformity is awful and it will suffer every day of its life. I hope your DD has deep pockets. Has she thought about the next 15 years? Or more likely 7 or 8 with this dog, life expectancy is not good. Plans to move into a rental property for example? Her life will be limited with a dog to care for as will her housing options. No late nights out with a dog to get back to, no spontaneity whatsoever.
Please do report the puppy farm vet to RCVS though.

Yes.

Insure him now and separate the dogs until he's seen the vet because that poor dog

Has kennel cough - you know he'll give it to you dog?
Possible parvo/something nasty
Is going to have breathing and skin probates it's whole life. Which will probably be short

I am a dog lover, I foster and help in rescues and it makes me so angry when people look at a dog that's been callously bred so it elicits the "so cute" response.

I don't see cute (I mean all puppies are cute) but when they have been bred to be deformed so they fit some cartoon image of a dog I see animal abuse.

Not aimed at you OP - I'm sure you'll do the right thing. Poor puppy.

Ladybyrd · 03/01/2024 23:49

DD needs to step up and take responsibility. I don't actually think it's a bad lesson to learn at 20.

Blackhairblackheart · 03/01/2024 23:59

Big rope is a BS term for extra wrinkly which in reality means 'we crossed a shar pei in to get the loose skin' which looking at his snout and nose shape, id bet my last 5er he is. Shar peis are prone to entropian, skin issues and ear issues due to a short ear canal so basically theyve bred even more issues into an already struggling breed for aesthetics and to extort money of out people by calling them 'rare' and the like.

I also wouldn't of said no and took him in also, good on your daughter

Agree with this. If I had a tall staff, I'd be worried. I see what PP meant, not that he was XL but that he may fit into the criteria/sizings.

margotrose · 04/01/2024 07:52

But he's not a tall staff - he's a tiny French bulldog mix Confused

NewYearNewPyjamas · 04/01/2024 08:06

I didn't say he was. I said I'd be worried if I had one.

You said you'd be worried about him fitting the criteria - were you not talking about the dog in the OP then? Confused

NewYearNewPyjamas · 04/01/2024 08:31

Yes and no.

My comment was that I agree that that criteria is vague and there will be a shit show of dogs that are mistyped because of this.

For example, if I had a tall staff that was within the criteria of height at the withers and width of snout then I would be worried.

I don't imagine this dog will as it's frenchie size and has a frenchie face (from what I see) but there are many dogs that could fall foul.

Hope that makes more sense.

margotrose · 04/01/2024 09:00

It does @NewYearNewPyjamas ☺️

How are things going OP?

Going well surprisingly. He has picked up toilet training really well, has antibiotics and drops from the vet.
DD has stepped up and is doing the lion share and he is getting on really well with resident DDog.

for me, a dog needing rescued is a dog needing rescued no matter size and breed, he is certainly a happy little sole here and his character is shining through

That's what I get for lazy typing @margotrose 😂

Oh @Rescue2024 that's such good news for both the dog and DD. I love a happy pooch!

margotrose · 04/01/2024 15:58

In fairness @NewYearNewPyjamas I hadn't had my coffee when I read your response Grin

BeautifulAndBrave · 04/01/2024 16:39

I am too soft for my own good when it comes to animals, l would keep him. Could your daughter pay for his vaccines micro chip etc. He's too young to go into a shelter and what life would be have if daughter were to give him back?
Can you not report the illegal breeders anonymously?
Puppy days are hard work but temporary, he might settle quicker because of your dog.

You're very kind to have taken this dog on. Glad your daughter has stepped up. He's a very lucky dog
