DD bought a puppy home

Rescue2024 · 30/12/2023 23:09

DD is nearly 20 and came home with a puppy this evening. We already have a 3yr old that we have had since a puppy. Our DDog is very laid back and accepted the 5mnth old puppy for now.

I’ve questioned DD around why someone has just given her an expensive puppy for free, she has said she was concerned they weren’t treating it well and persuaded them to let her take it as it was living outside.

I’ve asked about vets and papers and what food it’s eating. She bought in a bag of working adult kibble and a few tins of 1-7yrs working dog wet food?

I’ve googled the vets she mentioned and I now know they are attached to a big puppy farm and they are someone I would avoid at all cost.

so what do I do now? Give the puppy back to people who clearly don’t want him because he doesn’t meet their level for someone to pay £5k for him? Offer him to rescue at the risk they find out and demand money from me/DD as it is their property/chipped to them?

I honestly don’t know what to do in the pups best interest but also protecting us?

i don’t want a puppy in the house as I work from home in a high demanding role and our DDog is happy at home with me. I honestly don’t want to go back to the puppy days as although he is cute, he isn’t house trained and I’ll be back to work on the 2nd working in an upstairs office with the need of no distractions. I do want to do the best by him though, he is only a puppy and deserves a chance.

Poor little fella, he’s had a rough start.

AuntySueDoesntGiveAShit · 30/12/2023 23:48

Does the vet run a puppy farm ? I'm a bit confused.

spiderlight · 30/12/2023 23:51

Good on your DD for wanting to help him. I'd be very proud of her for that. Get him vet checked asap and checked for a chip in case he's been stolen. Long-term, I'm an utter softy and would end up keeping him, but you need to think about insurance costs etc for a brachycephalic breed as well as the practicalities.

I don’t want to out myself as I’ve had a long running thread about a different foster dog a few years ago.

I live somewhere small and a new vets opened up that only really dealt with bull dogs. They took my interest because, well, I’m nosy and I soon found out they were running a breeding centre from within the vets and the owners also owned land that had facility to bred ie a puppy farm.

I don’t believe this poor pup has lived indoors, he is currently enjoying snuggles whilst I time taking him in to our garden for wee wee’s

Point out to your daughter that you don't want a puppy in the house and ask her what she plans to do with it. When she has her own establishment, will she be bringing random dogs back there? I suspect not, she just assumes you will take on the responsibility.

DD does have my passion for animals
money isn’t an issue, DD can afford it and so can we
that’s not my issue, I can’t have a puppy here needing to go out for a wee after every sleep, play, etc
although I work from home, I am in an office on the phone between 10 mins to over an hour and I can’t have any disruption- Ddog and I have a great routine.

that said, I can’t see him sent back to a puppy farm that was willing to just give home away.
rescues are full to the brim so I would foster him to keep his home life stable and by that time well, we might as well keep him...

' DD met a friend through work who then showed her the puppy at her house, he was outside with big dogs, getting knocked about. '

So a proper friend ? or the friend of a friend ? or the friend of a colleague ?

and this friend let your dd take the dog home ?

what breed were the ' big dogs '

does ' friend ' think/believe/hope dd has bought the dog / brought it home on approval ?

as you know during Covid/Lockdown French Bulldogs were very very popular and selling for tons of money, now rescues are full of them - puppies and adults

Itsallchange · 31/12/2023 00:10

I brought a French bulldog thought I’d done research and
seemed healthy although tiny in comparison to others in litter. Died at 16 weeks from liver failure, insurance wouldn’t cover as mentioned loose stools at vaccination appt. £3500 for no treatment as died within 24 hours of becoming unwell. the cost was for icu overnight
defo visit a vet and consider a rescue

EconomyClassRockstar · 31/12/2023 00:16

I don't understand the problem. Your adult child has a dog so it's up to them to sort out, not you. Just point out to them that life isn't a TikTok and they need to step up.

Not a proper friend, a work friend. DD doesn’t really have friends.

the big dogs in the garden pen are big breeds compared to a tiny puppy. Pup has a few nicks on it’s face, mouth, eye lids.

in my limited opinion this isn’t a pure bred frenchie, he is a gorgeous and tiny mix bred, accident maybe? Certainly not wanted hence why he is here with us.

I’m coming around to agreeing with you.

I’ve set up a den in our livIng room ready for new year, covered in blankets and near to us and after new year I’m back to work with our `DDog in tow and DDs dog is her responsibility

Sounds like you’ve already accepted keeping him, get him to the vets and fingers crossed he’s well x

OP we cannot possibly advise you without a picture of the puppy in question.

I think we all know how this will work out. Congratulations on your new addition OP! Time for your daughter to step up. Has he got a name yet?

ELCismyspiritnana · 31/12/2023 00:58

Oh bless his little heart, I bet he's so happy having found a kind pal and lovely humans.

I see what you mean about the sharpei look to his face - but it could just be his wrinkles haven't settled yet. Also, is he a blue ? Those are rarer so more expensive, I would be very wary of why he was let go for free to be honest. But also at the same time I would already be in love with him and named him and sneaking him ham lol.

After speaking to my DD again, apparently he is a big rope french bulldog which is a USA breed? This pup doesn’t have any active dna in him so he is useless to them.

DD saw him in an open pen in her friends garden with big guard dogs bossing him about and persuaded her friend to let us “Us” to have him.

😂😂😂

He does fit right in!

Jitterybugs · 31/12/2023 01:10

That scene would melt the hardest of hearts ♥️

I’d be concerned that he’s a stolen puppy and maybe the place your daughter rescued him from was just a temporary stop gap while waiting to be sold on. Hopefully the vet will find a chip to scan.

AuntySueDoesntGiveAShit · 31/12/2023 01:16

You'll have to give him a name Op , how about Pierre ?

PiggieWig · 31/12/2023 01:22

Sounds like the little chap has struck gold finding you guys ❤️

Rescue2024 · 31/12/2023 01:38

No, no, no his temp name is Roman I suppose because he roamed in… and his big brother is Reggie

@Rescue2024

Given your background in Rescue, I'm surprised you don't know what to do?

you're the experienced one, I'm not surprised DD is leaving it to you. But IMO if she wants to keep him, she needs to step up with being the one taking him out for wees, taking him to the vets (though as this is a bit complicated, I'd go with her). Etc etc.

...and I wouldn't have had him near my dog until he'd been checked over for anything he might be carrying, you've put your dogs health at risk.

id get him insured BEFORE taking him to the vets.
