Your favourite unexpected thing about your dog

What is something about your dog you just love that is utterly unexpected that you love?

I'm not talking traits you know foe the breed but something about your dog that just makes you all aww.

For me I have a Basset hound known for sniffing and long ears and being lazy and gentle

My unexpected favourite thing about him is how he sounds like a freight runaway train (dh says a horse galloping) when he comes running full speed at you. It fills my hear with joy each time
100% not something mentioned in the breed descriptions

The content sighs when he's cuddling up on the sofa. Literally the sound of happiness.

Ahwig · 15/10/2023 20:32

My friend had a beagle and if he'd been caught misbehaving, pinching a biscuit or something similar, she would call him by his name " Maxie" and he would immediately lay down wherever he was and put his paws over his eyes. It was like, if I can't see you then you can't see me . It made us laugh every time.

SpamhappyTootsie · 15/10/2023 20:36

Seal Face and Banana Butt when she is happy and excited to see us.

My eldest is a working cocker, and when I'm getting dressed in the morning he waits on the bed with our other dog. If I'm blow drying my hair at my dressing table next to the bed, he sits patiently until I've finished and then he leans across, puts his paws on my shoulders from behind and snuzzles into my neck. Every single time. Then the moment I stand up, they both go crazy because it means walkies. Even though we do it every blinking morning... they bark, run down the stairs at 100 mph and spin round in circles in the kitchen waiting for me to put my coat on. Crazy fools. Drives DH mad but makes my heart melt 😍

natura · 15/10/2023 20:50

Have you ever seen those fainting goats? The ones that go all stiff and fall over when they're startled?

My dog does that in bushes and plants - and then wriggles around with his feet in the air to scratch his back.

My neighbour recently went on safari and sent me a photo of a lion she saw – I put it next to a picture of DDog doing his upside-downing and I honestly can't tell which is which now.

ETA: oddly, the picture only shows in full when you click on it...

If I wake in the night and reach for my phone and then spend too long doom scrolling (or similar) - he gets up and sits on the bed beside me, looking down on me as if to tell me it's time to put the phone back down and go back to sleep.

Works every time to 'remind' me not to stay awake too long doing it.

As soon as I put the phone down, he curls up into me, sighs and goes back to sleep Grin

Pigeonnoir · 15/10/2023 20:52

My French bulldog is a very polite poo-er . He never poos on the grass always in a verge or under a trampoline on concrete etc. Never have to scrape poo off the grass or worry about kids stepping in it he's bloody brilliant!

NormaLouiseBates · 15/10/2023 20:54

My Labrador hugs me. I've never known a dog do this! She'll come up to me if I'm sitting down and gently jump up until her paws are on my shoulders then she shuffles in closer until her 2 front legs are wrapped around my neck. Makes me melt every single time!

Dogsandchocolaterule · 15/10/2023 20:55

Her smell. If she lays on the armrest of the sofa I just get wafts of her smell every few minutes and it completely relaxes me.

How she likes a 5-10 minute snuggle before bed. I get into bed she asks to get up on the bed by pawing at the mattress. I pick her up and cuddle her like a teddy bear and after 5-10mins she gets down goes in to her bed and goes to sleep. It's adorable.

SparkyBlue · 15/10/2023 20:58

@grosslyunfair my jack russell does that as well. He often burrows under the duvet and lies on my legs when I'm asleep.

devildeepbluesea · 15/10/2023 21:01

Two things that never fail to make me laugh: when he’s done/doing something a bit naughty and you ask him about it, he will give a little snarly smile - like and Elvis sneer. We try to make him do it all the time!

And when he’s out walking he’s perpetually on squirrel watch. When he sees one he shoots off into the woods making this strangled high-pitched squeal/bark. I’m regularly asked by shocked passers by if he’s ok, but he’s just at the bottom of a tree shouting at the squirrel to come down and let him kill them 🤣 BIL says it sounds like a fox has got his nuts caught in a vice.

ilovepixie · 15/10/2023 21:02

The way she puts her paw on my arm when I'm stroking her.
Her little sighs of contentment as she curls up beside me at night.
She does a soft woof at me when she wants something.
She barks at dogs on TV and runs behind the TV to find them!
She's just so adorable and is my world.
We lost my partner last year and her little world was shattered as she loved her Daddy so much, and we also had to move house and her little face is so confused at times as she wonders where her Daddy and her house is but she's coming to terms with it now.
I just love her so much.

SensitiveB · 15/10/2023 21:05

Our cavalier sneezes with emotion when she’s pleased to see us every morning even though she’s slept on my bed all night .

she also growls at the sink when wants a drink of warm water instead of her water bowl . And asks for an egg in the morning something purely through very good facial expressions I find a bit hard to say no to

Lundin · 15/10/2023 21:08

I love love love how my springer spaniel nearly bends his body in half and does this funny sideways walk of joy when he sees me. He's walking yet his tail is whacking his own face he's so contorted.

vernatheraven · 15/10/2023 21:14

My youngest dog will talk to you in different tones and noises if you have a conversation with him or ask him questions.

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 15/10/2023 21:16

My dog jumps on my lap and licks my tears when I cry, it’s the sweetest thing ever. He also climbs into my dressing gown and curls up in the foetal position. HE IS MY (12 year old) BABY.

vjg13 · 15/10/2023 21:17

Our lurcher loves to have her paw held. She sits next to you offers her paw and if you let go she is paws you until you hold it. If you squeeze it she tries to squeeze back!

Waystation · 15/10/2023 21:42

If I take too long to throw his ball on a rope he will stick his nose into the hand loop and throw it himself. If we go to his favourite place his tail goes round like a helicopter rotor blade and when he runs through the undergrowth his ears fly and he looks so happy. When we do a whole family walk he can barely contain his excitement and bounces all the way down the path. He is always happy and excited to see - he is just a fluffy ball of happiness.

Jenzine · 15/10/2023 21:42

My lurcher gets huffy if she asks for something and I say “later”. Deep sighs of disappointment.

My bichon mix will appear out of nowhere and steal one of the lurcher’s toys to lure her upstairs to bed. They’ll nap together for a few hours when she does this.

Rooma · 15/10/2023 17:32

My two border terriers wait for me to get out of the shower then lick all the water off my feet and calves. I've had dogs all my life and hadn't experienced this until these two.

My parsons terrier does this as well. She waits by the bathroom door. She also likes body lotion.!

Bovrilla · 15/10/2023 21:48

Him hopping on the bed when the alarm goes off, puts his head in the crook of my neck, sighs and cuddles up. Some days I don't need to get up but I have a cuddly snooze with him like that.

His little "excuse me" noises when he wants to nip out to the loo. So sweet.

That he's a total cuddle monster. He's just SO soft and affectionate and loving.

DH has learned he's gone further down the pecking order since the dog arrived 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Pleasedontdoit2023 · 15/10/2023 21:49

You have to love a zoomie . My JRT is absolutely hilarious and can cover the whole upstairs ,every room in the house in seconds ! She also glares at me and comes out from under duvet if I am awake too late on my iPad .

Bovrilla · 15/10/2023 21:50

@Lundin mine does that too! The whole body wag, complete with whimpering if it's a particularly favoured person!

KathieFerrars · 15/10/2023 21:50

Mine says 'hello' when I come home from work. I say it and then she says 'hewooooooo' over and over. Another thing, which is teally funny is when she sniffs a fox thats been in the garden she will put her nose to the ground, boof her bum up to the max, tail up and so she's almost on a diagonal run around frantically chuffing to herself. Oh and when she rolls in frost. She loves rolling in frosty grass.

DustyLee123 · 15/10/2023 21:51

Mine sleeps on my bed and cuddles in if he’s cold. So nice to wake up in the night with that warm lump squashed against you. It makes me smile.
