Your favourite unexpected thing about your dog

What is something about your dog you just love that is utterly unexpected that you love?

I'm not talking traits you know foe the breed but something about your dog that just makes you all aww.

For me I have a Basset hound known for sniffing and long ears and being lazy and gentle

My unexpected favourite thing about him is how he sounds like a freight runaway train (dh says a horse galloping) when he comes running full speed at you. It fills my hear with joy each time
100% not something mentioned in the breed descriptions

My two border terriers wait for me to get out of the shower then lick all the water off my feet and calves. I've had dogs all my life and hadn't experienced this until these two.

My BT does this too, I have two other dogs and neither does it.

Vitriolinsanity · 16/10/2023 20:16

Everything. He literally saved me and DS.

Ohwhatadag · 17/10/2023 06:07

So hard to decide. I think that he takes himself off to bed with dd and they snuggle up, with him as a big teddy bear. He makes her so happy.

But it still makes me laugh so much when he comes back from walkies. He shoots through the length of the flat like a bullet, jumps over whoever else may be on the settee until he gets to me and stops stockstill like a statue by my side.

Leonberger · 17/10/2023 06:38

Mine bounce like tigger whenever they are happy. Teatime, walk time, when I come in. All 4 giant paws off the ground 😄

I also love how they walk me to where they want me to go by holding my arm in their mouth.

My GSD is much more serious and does everything her breed is meant to do by the book!

onanotherday · 17/10/2023 06:52

She stays warmer than a hot water bottle! 😁

MrsChuckBass · 17/10/2023 06:57

Loads of stuff!
She follows DD7 around as if she's actually her mum and cuddles upto her infront of the fire
She rounds me and DP up in the evening when she wants to go to bed
More seriously another dog made a beeline for the little DDs in the park and our dog ran faster than I've ever seen, jumped infront of the DDs and fought the other dog away while I ran over. Other dog owner never even called their dog away. We will forever be grateful to her and she is so loved

I have 2 German Sheppards. They are always at the garden gate when we arrive with our cars. The moment we are inside, they are waiting on the patio tails wagging at 100 miles an hour. I can literally see them smiling.

They know us so well. They know when we are sick, they would not leave our side and hate if DH and I are having words. They'll push their noses between us and give us their paws to stop "the atmosphere".

They are our family and they know it.

iloveeverykindofcat · 17/10/2023 16:55

His voice cracks me up. He's a rescue and at first the only sounds were barks, usually fearful/fear aggression. Even then, we could tell how deep his voice was. If he was human he'd be a baritone. Now he does a lot of 'ROOOO', 'WOOO!' 'ROOO!" to express himself whilst wagging his tail. Its SO DEEP, its hilarious.

We love the way our dogs ears smell it's really comforting Bear and didn't ever expect that to be a thing lol

Belshels · 17/10/2023 22:48

Our Cavachon puppy when I come home from going to work for 3 hrs, that little excited happy face, crazy with excitement, panting and waggy tail. I pick him up and he's a fluffy wriggly blur that licks me to death. So adorable🥰
Also when he runs so fast his little legs can't keep up and he falls over himself, and when he chases around the house, and the floor is slippery, he takes the corners too fast... Like in a cartoon eg Tom & Jerry!😀

Wow! Is there a story you can share with us over this? Well done to your amazing dog.

EcoCustard · 17/10/2023 23:02

My old working cocker spaniel has always loved the hair dryer. If he hears it he runs through at high speed, sits and awaits a blow dry. His love of being wafted with warm
air has never faltered. Along with his ability to tick DH off especially when camping as he climbs into the sleeping bag with me and settles for the night leaving him with little to no space. The dog snores less so I prefer his company 😁

CrapGoat · 17/10/2023 23:07

I have a mutt of varying large wolf breeds. She alerted me to a man lurking around in the trees/shadows one night when I was walking to my friend's. At first she was just looking, she'd smelt him I think but then he followed us up the road and appeared behind me- I wouldn't have had a clue he was there. She barked and snarled at him-who knows what he might have done to me, she potentially saved my life-more likely saved me from being attacked or robbed in some way.

Sorry if that's not in the spirit of the thread!

DontBeAPrickDarren · 18/10/2023 09:12

Absolutely in the spirit @CrapGoat - well done to your dog. We have a staffie who would sooner lick someone to death than attack them but I like to think the look of her is deterrent enough to anyone who crosses us on a walk or thinks about entering the house uninvited. I’m especially grateful for her when DH is out late or away (even though he’d be less use than the dog if something happened).

It does freak me out when she looks out into the garden at night and a big dark stripe of fur appears down her back from her ears to the tip of her tail, though it’s usually next door’s cat trying to wind her up.

Oh! is this the skinny fox corgi? He is such a beauty - and clearly LOVING his new life. Flowers to you and Biscuit to him.

iloveeverykindofcat · 18/10/2023 13:16

@MainlyOnThePlain Thank you. He's a lovely dog. Just happy boy loving his life. Possibly not the brightest corgi we've ever hand, but he understands enough!

FoxRedPuppy · 18/10/2023 18:13

Mine is still a very new puppy, but he makes sure that all his toys are in his crate. Once they done, if he finds one on the floor he has to drag it into his crate 🤣

bingohandjob · 20/10/2023 18:36

Nearly 3 year old black lab. One of my favourite things is how human and noisy his yawns are after a big run/swim/walk. They make me laugh every time. He's very chatty generally. I love his big contented sighs when he settles down for a nap.

Tiredmummy201 · 16/10/2023 17:09

How much I could love him ... he's 16 now with lots of health issues he likes to get up at 5am sometimes earlier, has accidents and costs me hundreds a month in vet bills but i see every day he wakes me up as another day with him, now I know our days together are limited. He's adorable in his old age too super cuddly and just wants to be near me, I always knew I loved him, but the realisation that he hasn't got long left has made me realise just how much I love him and how much I'll miss him.

Goodness, this hit me hard. I'm so glad you've had one another in your lives. I lost my dad recently and my lab just knew - he didn't leave my side for weeks and it felt like he was keeping an extra close eye on me. My dad adored our dog and they brought each other so much joy. I talk to my dog about my dad all the time and have a little cry and he just tucks his snout even deeper into my neck.

ChienneDesFromages · 22/10/2023 21:29

These are great to read- so many brilliant dogs bringing joy.

Our big Lab used to cuddle on DD’s lap when he was a puppy and she was a 13 year old in lockdown, feeling very, very low. They got into the habit, and now if she sits on the floor he takes it as his cue to plonk his now enormous self into her lap like he’s a puppy all over again. They both love it and look absolutely ridiculous.

Little Lab has many vices, mostly greed-related. But I could forgive her anything when she is so excited to see me she treats me to one of her all feet off the floor, 360 degree arabesques. The ears join in too of course!

Notellinganyone · 22/10/2023 21:32

My whippet cross sits with his paws elegantly crossed looking like a Jane Austen heroine!

ilovesushi · 22/10/2023 21:44

Possibly because our dog lives with two cats she has all these funny little chatty catlike noises. The three of them - two farm cats, lab - will sometimes sit together looking out the window at magpies and making a series of bizarre noises like a little acapella group. Heart melting.

JudyP · 22/10/2023 22:52

Our mini schnauzer makes us laugh so often - they way she welcomes us home with so much excitement as though we've been gone for weeks - she snuggles next to your leg on the sofa and pushes herself in so she's as tight as possible against you - she puts her nose under your hand to get you to pat her and she does the cutest playing with her toys on her back using her front paws like hands to hold her toy above her head!

Tiredmummy201 · 26/10/2023 12:02

@bingohandjob I’m so sorry about your Dad am glad your sweet dog has been looking after you.

What a sweetheart.

We have a rescue Corgi, too. Such a deep voice from a little dog. She is very intrepid and curious and likes to lounge in boxes and pop bubble wrap.
