Do all dogs smell?

I’d love a dog but I have yet to meet one that doesn’t smell. Honestly, is it just a thing that dogs smell? It’s the main point putting me off. Our friends dog is lovely and comes to stay when they need her looked after. I could change many things if it were my dog (they let her sleep with them and get on the furniture which I wouldn’t)…. But it smells. Which I don’t think is actually avoidable… but is it?

Mine doesn’t and my friends’ dogs don’t either! Some breeds are prone to it though.

ElizabethVonArnim · 14/07/2023 21:23

Yes

StillPerplexed · 14/07/2023 21:29

All dogs will smell to some extent but some are much worse than others. Some dogs are just greasy! Dogs like labradors have oily water-repellant coats and so will tend to smell more. Some dogs, like whippets, only have one layer of short fur and so don't tend to smell so much.

TappingTed · 14/07/2023 21:40

Poodle breeds? This one is a popular mixed breed one…

does food influence it?

I have a German shepherd and she really stinks when wet but she only smells if you put your nose right against her fur when she’s dry. I have a doggy perfume that smells of talc powder for when she’s stinky

tillyandmilly · 14/07/2023 21:44

I always used special lavender dog wipes for my jack russell- she was very fragrant!

It's luck of the draw with a poodle mix. Like, poodles themselves tend not to be smelly: they don't shed and so long as they're kept clean they should be fine. But working dogs like cocker spaniels, which they're often mixed with, do smell. Working dogs are bred to be outside in all weather and have that oily coat. So it'll depend on the individual dog if its a mix.

They all smell. Some more than others. As their owner you get used to it (to a certain extent. Wet dog is still wet dog).

Floralnomad · 14/07/2023 21:49

I have none, well two will be completing my pack very soon to make nine, instead of just coming for visits and some breeds absolutely do smell and others like my Whippets and Greyhounds are low odour. One Whippet in particular has a smell similar to a new born baby and sometimes I just inhale his neck much to his delight!

HermioneWeasley · 14/07/2023 21:54

Never met one that didn’t

ThatFraggle · 14/07/2023 21:56

You can always smell a house with a dog.

FoodCentre · 14/07/2023 21:56

All dogs smell of dog.

Only some dogs smell really strong (bad).

I think strong smells are because people don't think to wash the dog +coats that are harder to maintain

Notthecarwashagain · 14/07/2023 21:57

Mine smells horrible for a few minutes after she’s been outside (but I think people’s coats do as well)
And when she’s been to the vets she has an unpleasant smell.

Otherwise she mostly smells kind of nice, warm biscuity smelling- it makes me sleepy!
My hoover stinks though- smells like a completely different dog. Weird!

My sister’s house and dogs definitely don’t smell, at all!
(They do have a carpet cleaning business though)

JennyTheDonkey · 14/07/2023 21:58

I love the smell of my pooch, when he came to us he was on some food that made him really stinky but we changed it and he's much better. Does have a bit of a pong if he's not had a bath/dunk in the river for a while and I'm sure non dog people would say he smells awful but I love the smell of his neck and his twinkle toes.

You might grow to love it.

My dog smells pretty bad, he's a cocker/springer mix and dirty water is like a magnet to him. Even if he sees a puddle he'll just lie down in it. He's only allowed on the sofa in the kitchen, and that sofa now smells even though I regularly wash the cushion covers and throws. He's allowed in the living room but only on his bed, and he's not allowed upstairs, and these rules are all because he smells. All of the dogs I know smell at least a little bit, apart from a very fragrant Westie, but I think he's showered every day.

ForeverYellow · 14/07/2023 22:01

My dog is now 15 and has got smellier with age . I find I have to wash cushions and throws more often because I can tell she has slept on them . However , I still love to sniff and snuggle into the top of her head and massage her paws . I guess love makes you more nose blind !

AtlasPine · 14/07/2023 22:03

My dog smells of devotion, faithfulness and love. Except his ears which can get a bit funky from time to time. I use the dogs ear finger wipe things.

LaunchingTeabag · 14/07/2023 22:03

As soon as I go in a house, I can smell if there is a dog or not.

All dogs smell. Every one.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 14/07/2023 22:05

My dog never smelt but she was a tiny lapdog who was single coated so her fur was more like hair, she didn’t shed at all either, she also lead a very pampered life and had no interest in normal dog stuff like rolling in mud and puddles!

tigerbear · 14/07/2023 22:06

My cockerpoo stinks, and it’s driving me mad! Gave him a very thorough shower and shampoo yesterday, and he still smells! He does have a tendency to wee on himself though, which doesn’t help! 😱

Fifiesta · 14/07/2023 22:07

Any dog with longer wavy-haired ears (think potentially spaniel and retriever and cross-breed dogs with these mixes) can be susceptible to yeast type ear infections which totally stink.
If you can successfully treat and cure the infection the different will be miraculous !
(Will be a total relief to your dog!)
