Sorry meant to reply to the pub! Still haven't tried going to one with her yet, we did try sitting outside a cafe a few times but she could see too many dogs as it's next to a green area and so didn't settle well. Maybe being inside would be better. Glad Pookiepup had a lovely time!

pookiedoodlepuppy · 31/05/2023 15:27

Yes I find it has gone up a lot , I feel I need more in the bank nowadays as back up .

I think we're trying the pub tonight, after a trip to the beach to wear him out so he's more docile! 🤣

pookiedoodlepuppy · 31/05/2023 17:01

@NoWordForFluffy We took one of her chews to occupy her at the pub , doing the beach tomorrow ( we live beside the sea).

NoWordForFluffy · 31/05/2023 17:03

@pookiedoodlepuppy, we'll take a fish skin flattie and a chicken foot as they're his usual post-walk snacks.

We're by the seaside too. It's too far to walk there and back and give him a good walk due to his age, so we're driving up the coast to park at the NT place, then taking him on the beach there.

Gizlotsmum · 31/05/2023 19:02

So Gizlotpup had a puppy play date today. It went really well, he is knackered but they played nicely together so will do it more frequently

Unluckycat1 · 31/05/2023 19:45

Jealous of easy access to the beach @NoWordForFluffy & @pookiedoodlepuppy Unluckypup still isn't keen on the car so we've only been once :( How long does a chicken foot last? I find among what we've tried nothing but yak bars last long, but she does lose interest in them. Would love to find a chew that keeps her occupied for longer than five minutes.

@Gizlotsmum sounds lovely! I say hi and have a little chat with so many dog owners when out and about, but still don't properly know anyone locally with a dog. All my friends have cats!

NoWordForFluffy · 31/05/2023 21:45

That ended badly! 🙈 FluffyPup was very ill in the car so we had to come straight home to clean it up! I'll give him this: it was spectacular!

NoWordForFluffy · 31/05/2023 21:47

Oh, about a minute for a chicken foot. 🤣

BigBundleOfFluff · 31/05/2023 23:15

On chews.. Fluffpup is a champion chewer, a seriously stellar one. She sets herself a task to chew something to the death and will do it to the best of her ability.

Have a look at the JR Pets website. The chews that last the longest are the collagen ones for her. A few have gone straight through her, the tripe one was particularly memorable 🤢🤢

Antlers are good, coffee wood chews last some time and I've just got her this horrific looking horn thingy which will last her a week or so I think. For context the massive, weapingly expensive yak bars last an hour or so. (They would be gone quicker but she likes to lick hers a lot first)

Be warned, some smell absolutely vile so best saved for the garden.

Midnightstar76 · 01/06/2023 12:27

I have been buying rabbit ears for pup which she loves. Pup isn’t very good at travelling in the car and has to be on someone’s lap or she just cries and cries. She was sick in the car and ever since then if on her own and me just driving really struggles. So have avoided that and make sure someone else is with her now and it helps massively. Yes very envious of folks that live near the beach, we are about an hour away in the car but she won’t tolerate such a long ride out yet I don’t think.

pookiedoodlepuppy · 01/06/2023 12:32

Such a shame about the carsickness incidents , keep trying short journeys , with good endings (like a Park) it really can help , if the dogs sees that car journeys mean somewhere exciting .
I've never seen the chicken feet for sale , but if they last about a minute ..

Riverlee · 02/06/2023 11:51

Riverpup was okay in the car, but never really settled on the outward journey. Then we realised we were only ever going to puppy training classes. When we started going to different, more exciting places, he seemed better.

Midnightstar76 · 02/06/2023 11:57

Bit of a moan this morning. Took pup for a walk and the amount of dogs not on a lead and just allowed to come up to my pup. I really tried to avoid but the last incident was in the distance I saw owner saying sit to his dog (not on a lead) the dog then comes charging at my pup. I naturally picked pup up as was scared that this dog would do something. He then said it would do no good as his dog jumps and there you go dog starts jumping up at me and pup. One things for sure there is no way on this earth I would have let that dog get to my pup!!! He apologised BUT!! In training I thought it was curtesy to ask if your dog can just come over?! I obvs keep mine on a lead as only a puppy and have had no recall training but my goodness no one seems to even bother. Rant over.

Riverlee · 02/06/2023 12:11

He let his dog jump at you?! That’s awful. That dog should definantly be on a lead.

I was walking mine on the lead yesterday and a dog came out of nowhere on a narrow path in the woods. Must admit, I reacted because I was startled and you never know whether the dog was a friend or foe. However, owner was fine, controlled his dog (who turned out to be a big softie), and it became one of those British situations whereby we were both apologising to each other.

Riverlee · 02/06/2023 12:12

And yes, we were always taught to ask permission first as well.

Midnightstar76 · 02/06/2023 13:08

I honestly didn’t know how best to react so naturally picked Sandi up to get her out of any danger from elder dog. I know pups can be a nuisance to older dogs so I actively cross over the road etc to avoid. Think I will have a chat to my trainer next week about it to see what she would have done in that situation.

BigBundleOfFluff · 02/06/2023 13:24

@Midnightstar76 that's a tough one. In general I avoid on lead meeting if possible. That means always scanning the horizon for off lead dogs as well as the foreground for crap she might want to eat. I cross the road to avoid small yappy dogs and we try and walk calmly past the bigger ones.

In that specific occasion the other owner was totally in the wrong. I would have tried body blocking as much as possible or throwing a handful of treats down to distract the other dog and be on your way.

I have the opposite problem. My large clumsy enthusiast Uber friendly dog is always on a lead for that reason. Her recall is awful. When others ask if it's ok to meet I always warn them that she's an eager greeter. We do a sit and wait til people pass. I've honestly tried but think I just need for her to wait to grow up a bit to have reliable recall. I'd be mortified if she annoyed another dog or worse, small child.

Orangebadger · 02/06/2023 13:38

It's a very fine balance dog walking! I have a very enthusiastic friendly dog who loves human and dogs! She spends a lot of time on a long line but depending on where we are and who is about I let her off. Her recall is better than it was, not 100% but then there is no dog on this earth that has 100% recall. I have got to know a lot of local dogs and owners so a quick glance around to who is there and will decide then if she can come off the lead.

I don't have a problem with dogs approaching us tbh, and don't fully understand asking each owner every time. But I will read the situation and if another owner is not happy with my dog playing with hers, which does happen so no obvious reason, then back on the lead she goes. If a dog is too full on like the dog in this case I would expect the owner to put dog back on a lead. But then again, i have many owners worry that their dog will be too much for orange pup and want to get them back on the lead but she's a rough player so I know she's fine even though she's a medium dog. So I usually tell them, but at least they ask and anticipate the problem.

I do have a problem if the dog that approaches us is yappy or a bit vicious and if it's a dog that does not like other dogs, I would fully expect that dog to be on the lead at all times, unless no other dogs are around.

Thanks @BigBundleOfFluff some useful tips there. What I should have done was turn round and go on a different route home, you live and learn thus hopefully avoiding the situation entirely. I was thinking of that very same thing when I got home. And pup is a huge learning curve for me in the world of dogs.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/06/2023 13:48

@Orangebadger, FluffyPup sounds like your pup: adores humans and other dogs and always wants to say hello.

I tend to cross the road to avoid other dogs unless they appear from around a corner suddenly! He's OK from across the road with dogs, and can walk past humans now, which he wouldn't before, so I'll go on the same side if they don't have a dog.

Has anybody's dog started sleeping more during the day now they're older? FluffyPup had far too much FOMO until recently, but he's way calmer during my working day now (thank god!).

Midnightstar76 · 02/06/2023 13:55

@NoWordForFluffy can’t say I have noticed any more sleeping during the day but I am noticing a definite pattern to her sleep time. She sleeps from about 1ish in the afternoon and a snooze in the morning. Is 19 wks now.

Riverlee · 02/06/2023 14:08

We recently went to a dog field to practice recall. It has a six foot fence around so is safe, plus situated on a lovely farm. As well as practising recall off lead, it was lovely to see RiverPup run around carefree. At £6 for the hour, felt it was good value as well.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/06/2023 14:09

Ah yes, this is only since turning 7 months or so. It's like a switch flicked and he now isn't arsed about what I'm doing, as long as he can sleep near to me! As he is now! 😴

@NoWordForFluffy Riverpup has been the opposite and has been restless recently. Mind you, it’s been blowing a gale for the last few days (and is freezing despite being sunny) and not sure whether wind affects dogs like it dies children.
