Do you get annoyed if someone misgenders your dog?!

I was talking to a woman at a village family event the other day, and called her dog 'she'

Her facial expression instantly changed, and she quite curtly said 'um, he' and then the vibe changed.

Can't say it offends me in the slightest if someone calls my dog a girl, to the point that I'm even sure I'd bother to correct them in the situation we were in - chances are I'll never see her again 🤣

Does it bother you?

No not at all. Very odd.

DustyLee123 · 17/04/2023 10:26

I get people asking what sex mine is, and she’s on the end of a pink lead.

Suzi888 · 17/04/2023 10:28

Not offended, but I do correct them.

lifeturnsonadime · 17/04/2023 10:29

I don't think dogs have a gender do they?

They don't ask to be put in pink or blue or whatever.

They do have a sex.

And no I think it's a strange thing to get upset about.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 17/04/2023 10:29

WTF? No. And dogs don't have genders.

DrMeredithGrey2023 · 17/04/2023 10:30

Sorry - wrong word used.

Sex.

No, I don’t mind. Unless it’s my relative who veers between ‘he’ and ‘it’ which is a bit annoying. They don’t like dogs much, though, so I let it slide.
Current Lab is very slim and dainty, last Lab was taller and although still slim was more frequently misgendered. She didn’t mind - all attention was good attention Grin

BishopRock · 17/04/2023 10:34

It's sex isn't it, not gender.

Pink doesn't automatically equal female, that's just a thought up gender association. So any dog could be on a any colour of lead and it is just a colour.

CC4712 · 17/04/2023 10:34

I've found people generally ask or assume correctly. I'm not offended though if they call her a 'him'.

Isn't the pinkness due to the sex of the owner rather than the dog? I don't see many men holding a pink lead.

what does this mean? Does pink signify something to dog owners?

Exactly. Family member's dog has a purple lead.

BishopRock · 17/04/2023 10:37

We know we're in crazy times when people talk about dogs being misgendered!

How do your dogs communicate their gender identity to you? How do you know if you're misgendering them with a pink lead?

🤣🤣🤣

DrMeredithGrey2023 · 17/04/2023 10:38

Jesus.

I made a mistake. 'Misgender' flowed better when I typed it out.

I've said above I used the wrong word. I get it.

Mine is called a girl all the time 😂😂😂 I'd spend every dog walk in a bad mood if it annoyed me!

Theimpossiblegirl · 17/04/2023 10:39

My male dog has no testicles. I don't think he's bothered.

BruceAndNosh · 17/04/2023 10:40

To me all dogs are male, and all cats are female.
I realise that their species wouldn't last long if this were the case!

There aren't enough eye rolls available for this comment.

mondaytosunday · 17/04/2023 10:46

Couldn't care less.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 17/04/2023 10:48

I had a lady correct me on my dog's sex as ddog had lifted her leg to pee. Dog did this as she was a proper laydee who was very fluffy and hated peeing on her fur!
But clearly random bystander knew best.
My current ddog is a fox hound cross who is usually assumed to be a boy and people are always a bit surprised when I say her name is Nancy, I'm never offended but it is funny to see people's face when they've assumed she's a boy and hear such a girlie name instead

Spiderboy · 17/04/2023 10:54

No, and unless I am likely to speak regularly with them i probably wouldn’t even bother correcting them.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 17/04/2023 10:56

I'd be more annoyed at people checking the dog's bollocks (or lack thereof) with every dog they met!

Soubriquet · 17/04/2023 10:57

Noooo. It’s a dog. The dog really doesn’t care if you call it he, she, it or the thing from outer space

LakeTiticaca · 17/04/2023 10:57

The question is: do dogs get upset about being misgendered?
The answer: probably not 😉

hiredandsqueak · 17/04/2023 10:57

Well Bella has a face like Ena Sharples so always seems to be called she. Exh's dog is also called she but that's because he's a pretty dog. I dumped the pink lead and collar that Bella came with when we rescued her because I would have felt daft using it, didn't help that it had diamantes on the collar.
