Do you get annoyed if someone misgenders your dog?!

I was talking to a woman at a village family event the other day, and called her dog 'she'

Her facial expression instantly changed, and she quite curtly said 'um, he' and then the vibe changed.

Can't say it offends me in the slightest if someone calls my dog a girl, to the point that I'm even sure I'd bother to correct them in the situation we were in - chances are I'll never see her again 🤣

Does it bother you?

A lot of people assumed our lab was female as a young puppy. He’s not, he’s male. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

Picture of RiverPup for reference.(approx eight weeks old in picture)

CinnamonToU · 18/04/2023 14:38

No of course not although it's hard to mistake ddog as his doggie private parts are rather visible, plus he's a chunky muscular boy #proudfurbabymum 😜

Lastnamedidntstick · 18/04/2023 14:48

I find it really weird when I see dogs with bows on their heads. I mean, gender norms are all sorts of messed up anyway, but imposing one on your dog?

the bows on heads aren’t actually gender/sex specific. Traditionally in the show ring certain breeds have certain ways they present- ie the daft poodle hairball look.

Yorkshire Terriers have to be shown with a red bow holding their long hair out to their faces, for both sexes. Has to be red as well so no pink/blue indications. It’s purely functional.

VWHoliday · 18/04/2023 14:57

My dog is bother female sex & gender so it does bother her a little bit. I have unintentionally given her a gender neutral name so it does get confusing. I do correct people for her in a joking way.

My other dog is male sex and his balls are quite big for a little dog so never gets called a female.

Ichosetheredpill · 18/04/2023 14:59

No, I might correct them but I don’t get offended. Dogs don’t look male/female facially and when they’re as hairy as mine you can’t tell easily by glancing down.

Dogs don't have a gender.

🙄

@WoofWoofBeachLife

They were Portuguese water dogs. They were absolutely stunning!

I love those dogs, just gorgeous. I meet a beautiful standard poodle everyday and wow she's is stunning, the chap says he gets asked all the time is she a doodle mix, he gets quite prickly 🤣 xxx

We know we're in crazy times when people talk about dogs being misgendered!

How do your dogs communicate their gender identity to you? How do you know if you're misgendering them with a pink lead?

🤣🤣🤣

You knew what the OP meant!

ProbablyDogNappersHunX · 18/04/2023 15:10

Can't get worried about it myself. The dog gets upset about lots of things, but never about being misgendered.

I was joking on my first post but my dogs the same.

You can call her what you liked as long as you gave her a fuss and even better food.

BishopRock · 18/04/2023 17:25

@VWHoliday

I was more referring to other posters, one of whom thinks that a pink lead = a female hound.

OP mentioned she meant sex in a later post.

Apart from anything else it behoves us all to call out the use of the word gender when sex is the correct term.

speedyhedgehog · 18/04/2023 17:30

Mine gets called a boy all the time. Except by a lovely old lady in the vets who enquired 'is she a bitch?' Amused me no end since she can be annoying! But no it doesn't annoy me. And ddog loves any attention. And doesn't speak english so no offence taken by either of us.

ImAGoodPerson · 18/04/2023 23:02

Mine are both boys, I find generally most people call dogs boys anyway. Can't see how it could offend anyone really. I find it quite hard to think of big bulldog type dogs or St Bernards as being girls as they look so boyish.

TBF to the OP, in the good old days (about 3 years ago) gender and sex meant the same thing so I think them saying misgendered is fine as everyone knows what that means.

how does a dog look “boyish”? Are you just working on the principle that bigger= male? Do you also think small dogs look “girlish”?

PixiePirate · 19/04/2023 08:47

Only when my mum does it. Makes me irrationally angry 😤

DemonicCaveMaggot · 19/04/2023 08:50

Our new neighbour referred to our (normally indoor) cat as 'your animal' when I introduced them. I never felt quite the same way about that neighbour again.

DontMakeMeSayItTwice · 19/04/2023 08:52

😂😂😂

Horrace · 19/04/2023 08:54

I'm weak. You're all effing nuts

dudsville · 19/04/2023 08:54

I don't know why purple think they can accurately assume to know the sex of a dog unless they're in the business, i.e. someone who knows a breed well will make an educated guess. I have a female who always gets called a male, its because she's burley looking, which is silly!

YouveGotToGrooveIt · 19/04/2023 08:56

Sometimes I think the dog sex you have is the one you mostly likely assume others dogs are.

I always think they are male until told otherwise. But I have tended to have male dogs and think that is why.

Nap1983 · 19/04/2023 09:00

unsure about gender… but my lab 100% identifies as a bin….

Kendodd · 19/04/2023 09:03

No.
Aren't all dogs 'good boys' and all cats 'good girls' anyway?

ilovesushi · 19/04/2023 09:53

I sometimes (irrationally) feel a little huffy when my very pretty dog is referred to as 'he'. She has a more slender build and finer features than males of her breed and to me she looks 100% female.

It's just my opinion and how I see it, they are not particularly dainty looking dogs 🤷‍♀️

My small dog is a pug, he does not look dainty/girly in the slightest so no to that.
