I've found a puppy in a plastic bag

During a walk with my lab. It's looks like a poodle cross and go actually be in good condition.

I've called the vets and taking then in later. My next door neighbour has a microchip scanned and it's not chipped. No collar. Doesn't look to be in poor condition though.

Apart from the vets, what do I do?

I've fallen in love already!

Report it to the police. Look on Facebook pages. There’s one called Lost and stolen dogs or something like that. I bet someone is missing their puppy. Do nit just keep it without doing everything you can to see if it has an owner.

Fansandblankets · 13/04/2023 23:45

ReadersD1gest · 13/04/2023 17:27

Why would it have been stolen and then dumped? Honestly, what are the chances?

more than the chances of someone just dumping a puppy. If someone was heartless enough to do that they would have sold it. Dogs are worth a fortune. I bet someone took it, then panicked.

Mumwomansisterdaughter · 13/04/2023 23:50

Keep him , love him . Hopefully it’s a double blessing and you were meant to each other . Well done for being so good

Clarinet1 · 13/04/2023 23:51

I think Aldi would be quite a good name for a dog! Or Morrison; Spencer (obvs); Sainsbury; Or, to go more upmarket, Chanel or Tiffany!

AmeliaWarnerBros · 13/04/2023 23:54

OP, a pic is on the way right? Any dog pic will do. I'm slightly over-invested in this now...

Schnooze · 13/04/2023 23:56

Poor little pup.

Mamanyt · 14/04/2023 00:34

Yes, inform the police. That's as far as I would go with trying to find the owners. If it was stolen, they'll have reported it. If THEY put the pup in the bag, there's no way in hell I would return it to them to do God knows what with! Vet check first. If this is your first puppy, Youtube has lots of info on training and potty-training. There are plenty of excellent books, as well.

Give him a wonderful name, he's earned it, and love him as much as he will come to love you.

WasIWasINot · 14/04/2023 03:16

A puppy would easily be able to scratch its way out of a carrier bag.

CliantheLang · 14/04/2023 04:46

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 13/04/2023 21:49

I’m missing why so many posters are referring to the puppy as he/him. I can’t see an update from the op confirming the sex of the puppy, have I missed one?

Poor little pup. Sounds like the vets is the best bet?

Because all dogs are "he" and all cats are "she". Every 4-year-old knows this.

Fraaahnces · 14/04/2023 06:46

When I was 17 I found a kitten with her deceased mum and siblings taped up in a black plastic bag in a supermarket car park on a 38’C day on Christmas Eve(Aus). I nearly ran it over, but saw it wiggle. It was the last carpark available and I had a million people beeping at me as I was blocking traffic while ripping open the bag and rescuing Evie who turned out to be the best little Christmas present I ever had. I had never had a cat. I had always been a dog person. (The emergency vet dealt with the corpses, agreed with me that human beings were the worst animals on the planet and gave me tissues when I cried, taught me how to hydrate and feed a very sick, needy little Kitty who was too young to leave her mum, gave me enough supplies for a month (including a litter tray!) her home contact details in case I had any questions or felt hopeless over the Christmas break (I absolutely did!) She told me that her chances weren’t great, but this kitten seemed determined and full of life despite her ordeal. What’s more, she didn’t even charge me, either!) Evie never really grew to be a full-size cat (bonsai kitty?) - everyone thought she was still a kitten, but despite that, she was eccentric, affectionate had soooo much charisma! She lived to be 19 despite her awful start! (She passed in her sleep on my bed as she deserved.) She loved car rides, following me when I walked to the local corner store (past the fish & chip shop so she could schmooze for treats - she could leave the cat from Shrek for dead with the Bambi eyes!) and standing in the dry end of the bath, yelling at me while I showered because she obviously thought I needed rescuing. “You idiot! Don’t you know it’s wet????”

That is such a lovely thing to do, thank you for rescuing Evie, she was a very lucky cat 😊

Fake post I reckon.

Orangebadger · 14/04/2023 07:12

@Fansandblankets very lucky Evie, sound like she was a very special cat.

Yeah a fake post. OP has disappeared.

The difference here is that with a dog it is a legal requirement to microchip any dog over 8 weeks. The rescuer here has checked for chips as will any vet the dog sees. The fact this dog hasn't been chipped shows it likely wasn't a loved pet or from a reputable breeder.

It also means its likely unvaccinated as vets will push for chips and vaccines to be done simultaneously.

Also she has already been told here to check for posts about missing dogs matching the descriptions etc.

If the OP were to give this dog to a rescue group they would likely just check for a chip too (maybe circulate via media depending on their scope) , during this time the dog would either be housed in their facility or in an intermediary home and depending on the group the rescuer may or may not be allowed to adopt (likely having the pay adoption fees if they did) .

It's all just a bit pointless and a waste of resources when this dog is very clearly abandoned and has potentially already found itself a decent, responsible home

Microchips can move.

No one knows how old the puppy actually is. It is just an estimation. So it might have been too young to get chipped.

How would you feel if someone kept your beloved pet?

It is still theft. It doesn't matter how likely something is, you can't just keep a pet you found.

ChristineCricket · 14/04/2023 09:42

@suzettenoisette it was in a plastic bag though so would’ve died then who is the thief. One of my cats went missing a while back, if I found out he was alive and well in another home I would just be pleased.

Yes definitely.

Over half the threads on here are fake at the minute.

Hopefully next week they’ll settle down.

Yes, especially a 4 month old puppy! Well capable of scratching and chewing!

Greentree1 · 14/04/2023 12:59

Somanysocks · 13/04/2023 23:14

There is no puppy, in a bag, a cardboard box or tied to a lamp post.

Shrodinger's cat?

Contact local dog warden to report it found.
Then tell them you will look after it,
if/until an owner comes forward.
I wouldn’t log it anywhere else.
As all kinds of people are likely to try to claim it.
if no one comes forward to the dog warden it will be yours.

Probably but it’s astounding to see how many people don’t know the laws around finding a dog (in a bag, box, tied up,up a chimney etc etc) 😉

CrazyLadie · 14/04/2023 17:43

Report to the cops if it is not claimed in I think it's 30 days, you will be allowed to keep, that's what happened to us with a parakeet
