What words does your dog know, that you wish they wouldn’t?

Soubriquet · 17/03/2023 13:12

I don’t mean the usual one like walkies and din dins, but words they know, that they taught themselves, as a benefit to them.

For example, I’m disabled with a pain condition. When it flares up, I lay in bed, like today.

If I say to the dogs, “do you want to go upstairs?”, they immediately fly up instantly knowing what I’ve said.

Not sure which word triggers them, but they make no mistake of understanding me

Our dog seems to know loads of words...

On a walk "shall we go this way" and I'll point and she'll head that way.

"Shall we go upstairs"

"Need to empty the washing machine" - she'll go to the utility room, then head upstairs to where we hang clothes

Grin

I'm guessing like a child she just has picked up on those phrases and recognises them, but it is funny how almost human like she is!

mintbiscuit · 17/03/2023 15:21

I read somewhere that dogs have the capacity to know something like 100 words.

We can’t even use the word ‘walk’ in a sentence without the dogs getting excited!

mydogisthebest · 17/03/2023 15:35

We have to spell out the word WALK. They also know the word "ready" and get excited. We keep forgetting though so one of us will say to the other when we are going out "are you ready" and the dogs start jumping around the room.

They know the word treat and, believe it or not, carrot! They love carrots

MissyB1 · 17/03/2023 15:37

“Upstairs”
”Stuff” - relates to getting her treatbag and lead ready for a walk.
”biscuits”
”hair brush” - she thinks I’m going to groom her which involves treats.
“bath” - she runs a mile! 😂

Bettyboop3 · 17/03/2023 15:42

I have a border collie and am pretty sure he understands everything i say.

Keepupandout · 17/03/2023 15:45

Bath. Vet. I wish he didn't know those as we have to coax him out from under the bed!

Soubriquet · 17/03/2023 15:47

We use sweeties as a code word for my two. They really dance around when I say “you want sweeties! You want sweeties!!”

Our dogs know the words pub and crisps, they get really excited because that's their Friday evening treat.

They also know dinner and walk, so we can never do those activities ourselves.

Woopdee · 17/03/2023 15:48

Shop - she knows she's going to be left alone and sits in the garden refusing to come inside so we can't leave her.

BlueKaftan · 17/03/2023 15:49

My cat knows Do you want to cuddle? 🥰

Dartmoorcheffy · 17/03/2023 15:51

ruby1234 · 17/03/2023 15:52

Stop licking your bum!

My dog knows these words very well - I really wish he didn’t!

Pixiedust1234 · 17/03/2023 15:55

I don't own a dog but my cat knew most of these. We even had to spell out dinner, treats and yoghurt if she wasn't having any 😂

Animals are a lot smarter than we think.

FrangipaniBlue · 17/03/2023 15:56

My dog knows:

kiss (licks my face)

squeezy hug (puts his chest against mine and head on my shoulder)

DS and DH also swear blind that the dog actually says "mamam" when he's trying to get my attention 😂

slamfightbrightlight · 17/03/2023 15:56

Carrot (her midday snack, and god help you if you wait until 12.01)

DontMakeMeShushYou · 17/03/2023 16:01

Cheese (where?, where?)
Banana (where?, where?)
Biscuits (where?, where?)
Squirrel (where?, where?)
Field (must be going for a walk so need to bark and run around like a mad thing)
[Name of best doggy friend] (must be going for a walk so need to bark and run around like a mad thing)
[Name of best doggy friend's mum] (must be going for a walk so need to bark and run around like a mad thing)
I'll just get dressed (must be going for a walk so need to bark and run around like a mad thing)

She knows the names of all her toys too and loads of others too.

TheFlis12345 · 17/03/2023 16:07

My dog knows so many words. He knows the names of family members he loves who live nearby so gets all excited if he hears their names then cross when he realises we are not going to see them.

He know the names of all meals plus various foods, another one who loves carrots! He also knows fridge and garage and legs it to the garage if you say that to him as he knows that is where the good (stinky) treats are kept!

Hoppinggreen · 17/03/2023 16:07

Walk, treats, squirrel, cat

That’s impressive! Is your dog a collie?

VeggieSalsa · 17/03/2023 16:10

Walk - we can’t use it when talking to each other (eg if deciding to go for a walk) because she gets too excited if the word is mentioned.

She also knows packets of crisps by sound. She is excited if you pick up beef hula hoops (as she usually gets one), but cheese and onion walkers elicit no reaction as they’re not allowed.

Sometimes I will narrate what I’m doing and I swear she understands (like I’ll say I’m just going to get this from the living room, and she won’t follow.. but I just walked out to the living room she would). Many times I’ve stopped in wonder and said “you cannot have just understood that” while she looks at me proud as punch.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 17/03/2023 16:11

Chips
D.O.G.
W.A.L.K.
for fucks sake (she sits under the table for this one)

lots of others that she should know, she also knows the cats names

PritiPatelsMaker · 17/03/2023 16:13

I read somewhere that dogs have the capacity to know something like 100 words

As suspected DDog is as thick as mince. I swear that she doesn't even know her name, bless her. But she does know wee-wee and will will on command almost reliably if we are out.

EdithStourton · 17/03/2023 16:14

Mine know 'REALLY!', delivered in an exasperated tone. They both know perfectly well how to walk to heel, and this is what I say when the lead goes tight...

SnarkyBag · 17/03/2023 16:14

Treats
Chicken
Squirrel
what’s this?
Dad
Cat
Bed
Dinner
school (that’s what we call the doggy day care lady)

IaltagDhubh · 17/03/2023 16:18

”Wednesday” and “not Wednesday” - dog walker comes on Wednesdays.
