What words does your dog know, that you wish they wouldn’t?

Soubriquet · 17/03/2023 13:12

I don’t mean the usual one like walkies and din dins, but words they know, that they taught themselves, as a benefit to them.

For example, I’m disabled with a pain condition. When it flares up, I lay in bed, like today.

If I say to the dogs, “do you want to go upstairs?”, they immediately fly up instantly knowing what I’ve said.

Not sure which word triggers them, but they make no mistake of understanding me

My dog recognised "are" and "I'm" expecting them to be followed by " taking the dog out" , or "we going for a walk" . We used to say perambulation - he never twigged onto that if said as single word and flatly.

familyissues12345 · 18/03/2023 16:08

Thought of some more!

Our dog knows our names, so if you say "go to Mum" she'll run to me "go to Dad" she'll run to DH. Knows both of the boys too.

My favourite is also she understands "Ready, steady... GO!". She'll wait for me to say it, then charge and jump up when I say Go! Grin

LozzaChops101 · 18/03/2023 16:17

Mine does seem to understand a really scary amount. I think he knows that “cat” means any generic cat, but also “THE cat” is referring to our actual cat 😬 Whatever, it’s spooky. The funniest thing for me though is that he runs to the kitchen when the oven timer beeps. He doesn’t want anything, he just knows that when it beeps, we run 😫

He also seems to know everyone’s names, even people we hardly ever see 🤔

DataScienceNoob · 18/03/2023 16:20

I don't have a dog. But I was on a bus once and a lady came on with her little spaniel and she asked for a

"Ticket to the big green pet shop please!"

The bus driver says "Pets at Home?"

And the dog immediately wagged its tail and started chirping / tiny yapping with delight. And all the way there he was sat with his ears forwards, big brown eyes and sort of quivering with excitement as his tail wagged tap tap tap against the floor 😂

When they arrived he was bouncing around getting very very excited 😂

That's what I can remember off the top of my head. Female Lhasa Apso, very intelligent but also highly stubborn.

The male LA knows the above also, but isn't as responsive unless the word is 'sausage' or 'walk' He also rounds up the female to bring her inside when she won't come in from the garden😄

RubiesandRose · 18/03/2023 16:52

Coming? This way. Steve (the dog walker), Nannie (my mum), treat, dinner, breakfast. What's this? That's nice! (Comes to investigate what we have)!

I love the way he head tilts and ears prick up!

RubiesandRose · 18/03/2023 16:53

Oh I forgot, do a pee and do a poo. He actually poos in command! Pretty impressive I think.

Crikeyalmightey · 18/03/2023 17:17

Ours knows all the usual, and also let's me know when the washing machine beeps when it's finished. He likes to "help" me hang the laundry. 🐕

iloveeverykindofcat · 18/03/2023 17:31

@Q1w2e3 Oh Bunny! I've been watching her on and off for a while. Some of it could be selective editing/human over-interpretation but not all of it. That's about the level of understanding genius dog had. We didn't make do anything special with him, he came that way. We've had several bright dogs over the years since I was a child, but he was definitely on another level.

I read somewhere that dogs have the capacity to know something like 100 words.

We can’t even use the word ‘walk’ in a sentence without the dogs getting excited!

There's a dog called Chase who belongs to a retired psychologist and he's been scientifically proven to know 1,000 words!!!

So they have much more capability than we think...

hippygirllucky · 19/03/2023 06:51

Shower.

Poppins2016 · 19/03/2023 07:01

My family dog got to the point that she understood us spelling out W.A.L.K., D.O.G. and O.U.T. so we had to speak in code ("are you going to circle the village", for example). She was also good at understanding signs; we developed our own signs for sit, stretch, stay/stop, 'come here' and 'all gone' (food or treat related) with no verbal command.

wheresmymojo · 19/03/2023 07:07

Mine definitely knows...

  • Inside - go inside the house/room
  • Out
  • Go on, go to the toilet - used when she's looking unhappy about going out in the dark/rain for pre-bedtime toileting. She'll then huff and frown at me and slink off to go and toilet in the garden Grin
  • Walk
  • Treat
  • Fetch Daddy
  • Fetch Toy
  • Kisses
  • 3 x DCat names
  • Oooh, what's this? (I say it when I've got a special treat)
  • Chicken (her fave treat)
  • I love you - obvs I don't know exactly what she understands by this but she definitely seems to know it's very positive and involves kisses and snuggles 🥰
  • Move over

My favourite thing is that I tell the cats off for scratching the sofa / carpet. She picked this up and now as soon as they start plucking at something she races off to them and gives them a good telling off with the most officious look on her face!

wheresmymojo · 19/03/2023 07:09

Also

  • Careful (be gentle, watch out for the cat)
  • Leave him/her alone (leave the cat you're annoying alone)
RedHelenB · 19/03/2023 07:09

Mine knows our names, so if I say go to x they will.

beastlyslumber · 19/03/2023 07:15

Dogs are do clever. I don't think we should teach them too much language though, in case it spoils their loving nature!

beastlyslumber · 19/03/2023 07:15

So clever! Cleverer than me, obvs!

PritiPatelsMaker · 19/03/2023 12:41

I don't blame DDog. How dare you try and remove their treasure! Grin

Spanielsarepainless · 19/03/2023 18:05

My first Lab knew over a hundred words. But they were mostly taught.

Ellmau · 24/03/2023 22:13

My favourite thing is that I tell the cats off for scratching the sofa / carpet. She picked this up and now as soon as they start plucking at something she races off to them and gives them a good telling off with the most officious look on her face!

That's adorable. Do they pay any attention? (To either of you)
