@vestedinterests our local vet is £22 per month (just remembered, meant to pick up the forms earlier). Vets for Pets is cheaper, plus Costco sell worming stuff as well. Don’t know whether to go for convenience - ten minute walk but more expensive, or cheaper and further away (a drive). Does treatment vary much in quality and effieciency?

MrsWhites · 18/10/2022 17:39

@vestedinterests we are with pets at home £13 for flea and worming treatment plus routine vet appointments.

we had to go with a pets at home a bit further away because the nearest one isn’t accepting new patients either!

Polkadotties · 18/10/2022 18:12

Vet care packs are quite frankly a rip off. You can buy wormer and flea treatment online for a fraction of the price

BeansOnToast32 · 18/10/2022 18:33

My small breed costs £14 a month with vets4pets, includes all flea/worm treatments, annual vaccinations including kennel cough plus there are other discounts/benefits included like £5 off vet consultations, free nurse consultation, 10% off neutering and dentals.

GuyFawkesDay · 18/10/2022 18:54

Mine is £25/ month but I get free consultations included

Sunflowers765 · 18/10/2022 19:08

So we've got our first night with Sunpup! He's traveled really well to get here (4 hour trip) and has already had a nap in his crate. I'm sleeping down here with him tonight, not sure whether to set alarm for 2am or just see what happens!! Wish me luck!

vestedinterests · 18/10/2022 19:28

My nearest vets4pets does not accept new patients, the next one is approx 12 miles away (although I'm not sure if they accept new patients), I have messaged the breeder for advice, she gave me the name of the stuff she uses for her dogs but I checked it on line and is prescription only

vestedinterests · 18/10/2022 19:32

@Riverlee I would go for a cheaper option as you only need to go to the vet once a month to get it, also the one I have checked with will send the stuff in the post whilst the dog reaches their adult weight. Insurance, care plan or the treatment alone, food, chews etc it all adds up very quickly Confused

Riverlee · 18/10/2022 20:18

@vestedinterests It certainly does. Must admit, didn’t realise there were the added costs of flea treatments etc.

Rowgtfc72 · 18/10/2022 20:21

@Sunflowers765 fingers crossed for a peaceful night! Any pup pics?

@Beginningless depends how long you're sticking with the crate. We're hoping once ours has outgrown the crate, is housetrained and doesn't want to chew everything in sight, we'll be able to swap the crate for a regular dog bed. Think our crate will be OK till 6-7 months old.

Ps. Lots of chew toys. Always have one to hand. Had our pup two weeks and that's my best piece of advice.

HollyJollypup · 18/10/2022 20:38

We have the Fido Studio Dog Crate by Omlet in 36inch.
I was expecting my pup to be bigger/grow bigger but she is staying tiny so really it’s huge for her.

I halved the crate by putting a big Amazon box that covered half of it perfectly to begin with but she’s been such a dream at night and only had one accident as we fed her too late once that Iv took it out now and she has all of it.

We have a cuddle cushion in there too for her too.

Riverlee · 18/10/2022 21:03

Purchased new crate for RiverPup last week, from local Jolley pet store. He seem to have a growth spurt since buying it. Not he’ll last long in it. I think it was size large.

Ooh it did!!

Riverlee · 18/10/2022 21:34

SunPup is lovely.

Nugg · 19/10/2022 08:29

Hello all! Been a busy few weeks with nugget. She's doing well but a weekend with my daughter has sent her walks backwards so god knows what she did 🤣

She's been on 3 meals a day for a while but rarely eats the lunchtime meal and she's not 5 months until 28th. Would you just put a smaller one down until she refuses it outright?

MrsWhites · 19/10/2022 12:04

Aww sunpup is adorable!

Whoever mentioned the added costs of flea and worm treatments aren’t wrong - when you add it all up dogs are so expensive!

We seem to have better poo for most of the day now that we are mostly on the new food, have done it really slowly over a week now and are so far on 2/3 new food and 1/3 old.

Chewing has really ramped up this week, feel like i’m following him around the house with a chew toy permanently. Best thing we have found so far is a buffalo tail, long lasting and he seems to like it!

Riverlee · 19/10/2022 16:33

Some of us have been on this thread for several weeks, some are new. Wondered whether it would helpful to post ‘a tip if the day’, whether trivial or huge.

My tip is to use a ‘Slow feeder’. I could wax lyrical how it’s good for the puppy not to gobble up his food, good for their stomachs etc, but the real reason, is that it gives you enough time to empty the dishwasher!

vestedinterests · 19/10/2022 18:28

Both RiverPup and Sunpup are gorgeous. I posted on here about my lab being very bitey, mostly first thing in the morning however I found that cow's ear straight after breakfast will keep him occupied for at least an hour and then he will go inside his crate for a nap. They work out just under £1 each but well worth it. And I agree about all the unexpected costs- puppies are bloody expensive!

JessieEssex · 19/10/2022 19:51

So I had to go to work today and was worried about Twiggy - I left at 9.15, popped home for half an hour at 11, then DH did lunch and half an hour play at 12.30. I got home at 3. She was chilled and happy to see us although is more full of beans than usual this evening, presumably due to more sleep in the day! I'm so pleased it worked, this will be for max two days a week and the rest of the time I'm in and out or she can come with us whatever we're doing.

Riverlee · 19/10/2022 20:58

@vestedinterests RiverPup always is quite hyperactive first thing, so we find going out for a short walk after breakfast settles him. He also likes a cuddle, holding a yak bar in his mouth.

Can’t quite believe how fast he’s growing.

BoxerPups · 19/10/2022 21:00

The PEE'ING

WHEN does the peeing end??!?! We have two boxer pups. They are brilliant at going to the toilet in the day, lots of praise and treats, sleep through the night with no accidents but every evening one of them just pees over and over inside.

Thankfully the floor is wipeable but HOW do I stop this?! When one pees the other one then decides to pee. I continually take them outside and they go to the toilet but the hour when I'm upstairs doing bedtime for my children I can guarantee I will come down to four wees in the kitchen.

Help!

@Riverlee I can't take him out yet but will definitely try a short walk before or after breakfast from next week

Riverlee · 19/10/2022 21:14

Boxer Pups are gorgeous. Obviously don’t know what you have named them, but Ronnie and Reggie comes to mind.

Can you take them outside to do a wee before the children’s bedtime?
