Oh my fat fingers!

Maybe I'm better off walking near where I know fireworks will be set off.

Rowgtfc72 · 02/10/2022 17:35

We were just out with the dog and the buggy one day and someone started letting fireworks off. Me and my dad just looked at each other and carried on walking, dog obviously realised we weren't bothered and didn't flinch either.
Hoping the new pup is the same.

Citygirlrurallife · 02/10/2022 20:02

Hmmm maybe we should set off some small fireworks in our gardens to prep our pups 😂

any tips for lead training?!

Aria20 · 02/10/2022 20:15

You tube has some good fireworks desensitisation videos along with other sounds like hoovers, drills, roadworks, babies crying, door bells, thunder etc. they are really good you start playing them at low volume when pup is chilled and you are close by, if they remain calm and unphased give some treats and over days/weeks you gradually increase the volume of the sounds.

My dog is unphased by loud noises now and ignores fireworks/storms, walks past noisy roadworks etc. my mums dogs are terrified of everything loud and fireworks night/New Years Eve they get so stressed it's a nightmare for them barking, shaking, refusing to go out for a wee etc. they have to have medication from the vets and adaptil collars but it doesn't make much difference so it's well worth getting them used to these sounds early!

BoxerPups · 02/10/2022 21:23

@tizwozliz I've just looked at many pets for our 2 Boxers and for the level of cover you have it's £176/mo Confused

I'm really struggling with insurance; it's a
Minefield

GuyFawkesDay · 02/10/2022 22:40

The loon today chased more pheasants.

I think I might need to do more solid training with him, he's turning into a bit of a hooligan.

Autumn101 · 03/10/2022 15:09

@GuyFawkesDay these spaniels certainly have a tendency to be loons don’t they?! Mine is still on a high from being allowed walks again so runs at full pelt in a totally manic haphazard way - having to make sure we’re in relatively quiet places for walks. He bashed into DS2 the other day, sent him flying - luckily onto soft grass and it was funny to us but I have cold sweats at the thought of him doing it to someone else!!

On a positive we saw a horse on our walk this morning and he recalled instantly and waited nicely next to me for them to pass us.

HollyJollyXmas57 · 03/10/2022 17:43

Wondering if anyone has any advice on this…

Pup has been going out for walks for about 2 weeks… mostly with a mixture of me, me and our 2 kids and all 4 of us.

The issue I’m having is if I take pup out then she’s fine and walks along but if my partner or daughter goes to take her for a walk around the block she basically plops herself down and won’t walk.

My daughter went to take her to our local village shop this afternoon and got upset as pup basically won’t walk. She now thinks the pup hates her😂

She seems to walk ok if it’s 2 people so my partner and daughter but if one of them takes her out she doesn’t budge.

I wouldn’t say she has any form of separation anxiety from me. I can leave her downstairs and she will just go and lay down. I leave her in her crate and she just goes to sleep (doesn’t bark, whine or cry).

I left her with my dad today for 45 mins and he said apart from sitting by the door for 5 mins she was fine and didn’t make any fuss.

What can I do to get her to walk with others?

HollyJollyXmas57 · 03/10/2022 17:44

Iv posted under a different name before on here but she’s a cavapoo. 16 weeks 😀

@HollyJollyXmas57 Has your daughter taken treats with her? If HollyPup plonks his bum on the floor, get a treat out to encourage (bribe) him to get walking again. He needs to see your daughter as the best thing since sliced bread, so the odd treat or two (hundred) won’t go amiss.

Riverlee · 03/10/2022 20:22

Sorry, she, not he, unless Holly pup is identifying as a He…

Riverlee · 03/10/2022 20:22

(And s/he has got a blue bandana on…!)

GuyFawkesDay · 03/10/2022 21:10

Considering swapping this one for a goldfish at the moment.

Oh my lord he's hard work

@GuyFawkesDay sorry but 😂

What a great photo!

Aria20 · 04/10/2022 06:57

@GuyFawkesDay 😂 he looks ready for Halloween!

Rowgtfc72 · 04/10/2022 08:05

Aw @GuyFawkesDay . He's lovely.

This is a great idea! Not sure why I didn’t think of it.

She is a she. My partner just didn’t want to use a pink harness so we settled on a light blue tweed one😂

HollyJollyXmas57 · 04/10/2022 12:56

Well today I had my first instance of getting pissed off at another dog owner 😅🫣

My pup was on a lead… I was waiting for them to come through the gate so I can leave but I was a good 15 feet back from the gate waiting to exit the field.

They open the gate and their dog isn’t on a lead, comes running in, went past me by about 6 feet but then circled back quickly and came crashing into my pup, she’s yelping which upsets me, I’m scrambling to pick her up as the dog is still basically there on top of her as it’s a springer spaniel so bigger then my diddy dog.

He’s called his dog while walking away and gave a feeble ‘sorry’ and I said so you should be🤣 lost my cool and said your dog should be a fucking lead if it can’t stay away from other dogs. 😅
He said it doesn’t normally approach other dogs which is obviously a lie as it went straight for mine before I even had time to move and that he had said sorry to what else can he do.
Oh and he said no harm done….. which in a physical sense is correct but my poor old pup is still learning and being knocked off her feet and trampled on isn’t going to help her get used to other dogs.

I was so pissed off and shouldn’t of sworn but hearing her yelp and try to get away upset me. Iv just realised there will be so many more instances of this to come. 😓

was I in the right? Or is it ok for his dog to just run up to mine, knocking it over etc?

That’s so cute!

GuyFawkesDay · 04/10/2022 13:23

He's not cute, do not be fooled.

He's decided he'd really like to sleep on our bed every night after I stupidly let him up there at 6am at the weekend so I could have a sodding lie in.

So lastnight to repay me he was howling in his crate on and off til 3am. I went down, lead on, garden, return to crate in dark and quiet. Rinsed and repeated 5 times til he finally got the message. So now I need another lie in 🤦‍♀️

Prize @#&+ he is.

Making notes to not let mine on our bed now, even as a treat.
We go away over Xmas and her crate isn’t collapsable so I can’t take it. I think I might buy one now to take with us, I was going to let her on our bed😂

tizwozliz · 04/10/2022 17:46

We're on holiday right now. First night was rubbish, pup up every 2 hours for a reason we could not ascertain. Thankfully has been fine since then, think it just takes her a while to feel comfortable new places. I'm hoping it's something she grows out of as each holiday seems to start with an "oh god what have we done" moment.

She's been really well behaved on the beaches and walks we've been on. She's conquered her fear of waves and so enjoyed a few sea swims . Previously she would only venture in if like a millpond. She did let herself down and steal a ball today. I've spent so much time trying to get her to give up a ball but we're still not there yet.

Worried us last night as she threw up all her dinner and didn't seem quite herself. Seemed ok this am, so we had a quiet morning. Seemed lively enough when out and about so don't think it was anything serious.

@tizwozliz Lovely pictures.

Riverpup did well today. He met another black lab, bigger and older on our evening walk and although was a little nervous, did okay.

I seriously think we haven’t done enough socialisation though as we waited until two weeks past second jab and then only just started taking him out - two fifteen minute walks a day. I feel we should be exposing him to a lot more, but dh isn’t bothered.
