I think we're getting a puppy this weekend...

Going to meet him on Sunday. He's a 5 month old Cavalier King Charles spaniel called Harry. The breeder had planned to keep him for shows/breeding, but he doesn't quite might the standard (too big, apparently), so she's looking for a family home for him.

He looks absolutely adorable and I'm so excited. I won't lie, it's an added bonus that the breeder has done a lot of the hard work in getting him housetrained, etc, though I'm expecting to have to do a bit of work on this with a change of home.

Just hope he and the breeder like us as much as I'm sure we'll like him! 🥰🐶😍

The OP has given enough detail on this thread that's it's easy enough to see that the parents of this pup only appear to have a few DNA tests, none of the health checks/schemes recommended for the breed.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 14/05/2022 09:29

Ok @InkySquid, what would you like me to do?

Aw, OP I would ignore the crazy Mumsnetters. You are right that the puppy already exists and could be completely healthy, but if he's not - at least you can afford to take proper care of him. He also looks gorgeous and very big and chunky on Champsogs, so I think the breeder is saying the truth about him being too big for showing.

If they've not been tested for MVD or syringomyelia, I really advise you to walk away.

You are setting yourself up for a lot of potential heartache and expense down the line.

This in spades , it’s irresponsible to breed these dogs without these tests . It’s all well and good saying you can deal with medical issues but please at least look at some videos of dogs with Syringomyelia , it’s hideous and think about that possibility when you hand over your cash . Buying a dog / pup with potential health issues is totally different to getting a rescue with no breeding history that then ends up with health issues .

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 15/05/2022 13:25

Met the breeder and Harry has been tested for MVD and syringomylia - I've got the test results as part of my paperwork, and have seen clear test results for his parents and two sets of g-grandparents. The eldest of his ancestors is now 11 with no issues.

The breeder was a lovely lady, clearly very attached to him and his mum and sisters. She wants me to keep in touch and send her updates, and will take him back if there are any problems. I got a puppy pack with some food and his favourite toys.

So he's coming home with us and we are very happy. I'll post photos later for anyone who's interested. If you just want to pass judgement - well, it's a free country and I can't stop you. But I will be ignoring you.

From my Harry to your Harry, welcome to being a puppy owner.

I think we're getting a puppy this weekend...
Whitney168 · 15/05/2022 13:31

Excellent news, @GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal - hope Harry has many very happy years with your family.

Look forward to pics!

PollyRoulllson · 15/05/2022 13:46

Fantastic news. I am glad it has all gone well.

headbored · 15/05/2022 13:46

Yes we absolutely want to see pictures :)

TrufflesForBreakfast · 15/05/2022 13:51

Congratulations Grebo! We've recently added a Labrador pup to our family, and while he's exhausting, he's an absolute poppet and we're all in love with him 🥰

Hellocatshome · 15/05/2022 14:04

I'm just here for the pictures. I cant judge as I have a Romanian Rescue dog who would apparently savage us all to death in our sleep and have all sorts of foreign diseases. When he wakes up from sleeping on DS whilst he plays on the Xbox I will ask him why he hasn't killed us yet.

Is there anything quite as crazy as a Mumsnet thread when someone asks about getting or says they are getting a puppy. Mumsnet dog owners truly believe they are the only people capable of owning a dog. It's a shame this is such an unfriendly and judgmental board.

OP Congratulations on your pup! May he bring you years of happiness. Now, about those pictures...

LisaSimpson77 · 15/05/2022 14:29

Congratulations! Can't wait for the pictures.

Ha, I've always said this. Like no one meets the bar for dog ownership except themselves. People can't possibly be capable of doing their own research and deciding what's best. Can't wait to see pics of your new puppy OP.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 15/05/2022 14:48

Just peacemaking for the pictures.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 15/05/2022 14:49

Placemarking even, although peacemaking may be more appropriate.

GrimDamnFanjo · 15/05/2022 14:50

Fabulous!
I have reformed two former show dogs from the same breeder and it's a great option if you aren't keen on a puppy or a rescue.
I love cavs and had I had a local breeder with proven healthy results I'd have loved one myself.

MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 15/05/2022 15:02

Congrats op! I knew you’d get a hard time as soon as I read ‘cavalier’ 🤦🏻‍♀️ Hope you are enjoying your new pup and would love to see photos 🐶

I am a fellow cavalier owner, my boys are 7 and 8 now and fwiw they are in great health. The older one has a low grade murmur, but fortunately it doesn’t affect his daily life at all and he’s very active, such happy dogs with the most loving temperaments.

Sofasogood1 · 15/05/2022 15:10

Congratulations op. I have a six month old cav and Iove him very very much. Best thing that's ever happened to me. Get good life long insurance

I couldn’t agree more. Most threads about dogs attract ridiculous comments from self-styled experts. It’s such a shame.

OP I am so glad everything went well. Looking forward to seeing your puppy pics!

Floralnomad · 15/05/2022 16:20

It’s great news that he’s had those tests , congratulations on your new pup 🐾

Reading back on this thread the OP has had nothing but support and advice about being careful and checking health tests. Which they have done and all is good.

The OP did not seem to be aware of the health issues so all the posters did was draw this to their attention.

All the comments were to help the op not judge and were not ridiculous comments. All the advice is common advice promoted by all dog organistions when considering a king charles dog.

There was nothing nasty in the advice given.

Point learnt though no more comments will be given

OP has had nothing but well-meaning advice from people who didn't want to see her making a potentially very expensive and heart-breaking mistake.

I agree @coffeecupsandfairylights

this breed are a beautiful dog but so many are fraught with health problems so it was only responsible to point these things out.
I don’t get the impression it was done with any mean spiritedness.

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal Hope your pup is settling in well
