Went for a check up today as part of vet scheme. I knew our Lab had put on weight since being nuetured but omg he's 60Kg!!
He's only 5 years old, I stopped treats a few months back but habits creep back and he gets the odd titbit.
We have joined doggy fat club😀
He has 2 meals and 3 walks a day. Not sure how I can help him, he has a carrot mid day and a tiny biscuit at bedtime.
Any tips?

My lab got 120g twice a day. Anymore than that her weight went up.

Addidog · 23/06/2022 17:03

Doggy Slimmer of the week! Finally, we have gone in the right direction and he lost some weight, not huge amount but more than he gained last month so I’ll take that!

PritiPatelsMaker · 24/06/2022 07:39

Well done on the weight loss so far. We rescued a very overweight dog last year and it was hard, can't imagine how hard it must be with a Lab who will never feel full.

We started on Pooch & Mutt Senior and now she mainly has Chappie with a little Pooch & Mutt sometimes.

Just wondered if you're including the wet food in the daily guidance? If not, you might need to cut one of them back.

As for treats, our little weirdo loves a goat ear and camel skin, which is fairly low fat.

She also loves the mini cucumbers that Lidl sell in a box. She's tiny so doesn't get a while one but they'd be the perfect size for a Lab Wink

I started weigh my dogs food and feed him twice a day, by the time the next check up cam round, he was a healthy weight.

If only o could control my own intake as well Confused

SausageDogNamedBrenda · 24/06/2022 17:44

Well done @Addidog
It's so hard isn't it, we are plodding on, he is having his raw broccoli as a treat mostly.
With regards to wet meat, I wasn't weighing it but have cut right back on it, I buy a tin of naturo and keep it in the fridge and he has a spoonful with his biscuits.
He definitely has more energy these days.

You are not alone. My 5 year old cocker spaniel went to the vets this week and had put on 4.5kg in two years since being neutered. We've stopped all titbits, cut portion size and he often had a tiny amount of extra food late at night which we've obviously stopped. He gets lots of exercise and is very busy generally. hoping these measures work.

WeAllHaveWings · 26/06/2022 16:58

I still have to convert 4kg to 9lbs which is over 1/2st. Well done! Keep up the good work, looking forward to the slim line photos in the future. 🙂

PritiPatelsMaker · 26/06/2022 22:12

So glad he's got more energy. He must be feeling so much better Wink

SausageDogNamedBrenda · 08/07/2022 16:25

So Doggo went for a weigh in today,
Since start of May he's lost 4.7Kg (10.3lb)
They are really pleased with him☺️

You're doing so well!!

Does he think he's starved??

SausageDogNamedBrenda · 08/07/2022 20:43

He thought he was starved when he was being fed treats 🤣 so yes I'm sure he does!
But he gets the message now. If we are eating he gets a bit of broccoli or carrot, he eats it then settles down.
Had one blip when he stole a sandwich from the armchair but I blame DS for leaving it there! He must have thought it was Xmas 😁

🤣

Addidog · 13/07/2022 19:06

our weigh in was not so successful, small gain :-( not put on all he lost the previous months so I’m hoping it’s down to the reduction in walks (due to heat). However reading the sandwich stealing of @SausageDogNamedBrenda pooch reminded me mine has stolen 3 slices of toast of the side in separate incidents this month!

He’a barely eating in this heat so that may help him get back down the kgs.

SausageDogNamedBrenda · 13/07/2022 19:27

Aah bless @Addidog
I'm.sure lack of walks will have something to do with it!
They are buggers for stealing. I took doggo out at 7am today, he still found it too warm, but desperately tried to eat some melted chocolate off the pavement 🤦‍♀️

I’ve been taking him at 5.30M and we do about an hour but that’s it for the day, this morning was still quite warm though. And we’ve also all learnt that he can reach further than we realised for toast!! Fingers crossed it goes down again next month

EinsteinaGogo · 15/07/2022 13:15

Great work, OP, you're doing brilliantly with your gorgeous boy.

Ours is doing well. He wasn't ever too overweight but was gaining since being neutered.

You've got me in the broccoli for him - he loves it but only if cooked!

SausageDogNamedBrenda · 03/09/2022 23:45

Just thought I would postage an update as Doggo got weighed yesterday.
Since May he has lost a total of 6kg☺️
Vet is happy with his progress. He has so much more energy and it's great to see him running around the park.

Amazing we'll done!

Are those ribs I can see or just loose skin 💕

Floralnomad · 03/09/2022 23:58

He looks great @SausageDogNamedBrenda .

SausageDogNamedBrenda · 04/09/2022 00:21

He is still chunky at the front end, but can definitely see a difference at the back. I think that photo is abit deceiving, I don't think I've seen his ribs🤔

Gorgeous boy!!! I have a real soft spot for black labs.

And well done on the new eating plan.

I think you're doing everything right by this stage.

Gradually increase his exercise and also aim for walks in the fields/woods. At least at weekends if your schedule is otherwise restricted. I find it's much better than the park for keeping dogs fit.

It's incredible how fast dogs can put the weight on.
Luckily they can loose it quickly too.

SarahSissions · 04/09/2022 12:06

You’ve done so well. What a lucky dog to have such a dedicated owner.

RandomMess · 04/09/2022 12:22

My friend had to put her oldest cat in a diet. She was much aggrieved at the introduction of micro chip feeders for all the other DCats she's lost an amazing 1kg and is now 3.2kg and charging around with the kittens once more 💕

NighghtmareNeighbour · 04/09/2022 12:31

Well done op. He’s gorgeous. Ours is addicted to cucumber as a snack, I don’t know I’d you’ve tried that at all. Also chopped up romaine lettuce (hates celery though, can’t say I blame her!).

SausageDogNamedBrenda · 04/09/2022 23:23

Aah thanks everyone,
He goes to the park daily but at weekends we go to the new forest, it's very local. Love seeing him investigate the scents. He's very miffed that his favourite stream has dried up tho, in March the water was up to his armpits!
He does like cucumber but loves broccoli, especially the stalks.
