They gave me a bottle of fluid to irrigate rather than drops

WomblingKnobhead · 14/11/2021 08:51

In 55 years of living with dogs I've only once had a dog which needed ears cleaning and it never crossed my mind

WomblingKnobhead · 14/11/2021 09:00

I have a pic of his ear if anyone thinks they could give me an opinion....Don't click on this whilst eating breakfast. I don't feel its too horrendous and think my messing around trying to clean it is causing him much more upset than needed but I'll persist if people think I should.

The black dirt can def lead to infection that's what mine started like. Then it spread down into the ear canal and was painful for pup. What breed is he again? Dogs with ears that are down like lab/spaniels are more prone to infection as the air can't circulate. Is he shaking his head and rubbing it against furniture/floor?
You can get these in pets at home or on Amazon for £5 and they make for a quicker ear cleaning experience and aren't as uncomfortable sensation as the solution but if it's an infection you will need medicated drops and it will be a pain to get them in - a two person job if he's anti having ears touched!

@WomblingKnobhead That looks like my spaniel's ear when I took her to vet at 8 weeks for first jab. It was dirt but vet said there was some redness forming from irritation. And today would lead to infection eventually. I was told to clean them 3 times a day for a couple of weeks. I probably managed about once a day whilst she was distracted by a lickimat. Did work though and after a couple of weeks her ears were fine.

WomblingKnobhead · 14/11/2021 11:12

Thank you. I'll get those today and try as I think he might tolerate more than liquid. He doesn't appear to be bothered so am sure it's just dirt

GuyFawkesDay · 14/11/2021 11:38

Newsflash: FawkesPup slept on my bed as DH had a black tie do and came home at stupid o clock so slept downstairs.

We woken up at 9am. 9!!!! Had an amazing night's sleep 😆 clearly playing with your best puppy mate til 10pm and curling up on a king-size with mum is the secret 🤣

I am on ear cleaning today. Tend to do it when I bath him. Lickimat with primula stuck onto bath is our bribery distraction technique.

GuyFawkesDay · 14/11/2021 14:56

PSA for those of us with teething gits puppies.

I found this for about £1 in Sainsbury's. It's a dental bone, made of vegetables so no nasties in there. It's a HUGE hit with FawkesPup who is really struggling with his teeth. 2 canines out this weekend and I can see he's in a lot of pain, poor lad. Anyhow, for about £1, they're amazing and I will be purchasing more!!!

GuyFawkesDay · 14/11/2021 14:57

Would help if I sent the pic 🙈🤦‍♀️

It's a bit like a Whimzee chew but suitable from 4 months 👍

We went for a walk with friends with a cocker spaniel pup a couple of weeks younger than Ada. All thoughts I once had about spaniels being a bit more manageable due to their size have disappeared :-)

cheeseisthebest · 14/11/2021 15:51

Looks a bit like a rice bone. They are great!

LadyCatStark · 14/11/2021 16:03

Poor Billy hated the music at the Remembrance Day parade. I thought he’d be OK as he likes music but he was shaking and weed on my feet 🙈. We went for a walk while DS was in church and he was happy then but pulled like a train. I think because he’s not used to going to a built up area and there’s all different smells. It was embarrassing though as PIL came to watch DS in his parade and they only like dogs that are extremely well behaved.

GuyFawkesDay · 14/11/2021 16:36

@tizwozliz FawkesPup gets EPIC zoomies round new friends. He's absolutely nuts for about 5/10 minutes then he settles down but he looks like a mad thing at first!! Runs round in circles on the lead like he's doing the wheel of death 🙈

Jonesy2190 · 14/11/2021 17:44

Hi all, I've just joined but posted in about 3 places as I'm afraid I added onto an old thread (I think!) will try again!
Hi everyone,
I've loved reading everyone's posts, it's good to know the reality of puppy life!
DH and I brought home our cocker poo at 9 weeks old last Saturday.
He's v loving, enjoys training and generally toilet trained (fair few accidents but he's not doing too badly), OK with teething on the most part (unless it's witching hour!) but he just doesn't sleep and we think it's anxiety related.
He's never been crate trained and neither have his litter mates, so he struggles to go in his crate unless for food or treats.
He sleeps in a pen upstairs in our room with a blanket and a bed, very close to where we sleep but he doesn't stay asleep longer than an hour or so.
Last night we tried training him in his pen for a few minutes, locking the pen and walking away, he could see us but he still went crazy. Howling and hurling his body on the door of the pen, it was really worrying and terrified me. He's also anxious of meeting new people but took him for an outdoor pup class yesterday and got very confident quite quickly. I just wish we could crack the sleep thing. Any advice or pointers please let me know... Total puppy blues here

@GuyFawkesDay I think you know what you have to do for a good night's sleep...divorce. Simple.

@Jonesy2190 you will get two schools of thought on this 1) walk away and ignore the fear and crying...they learn to give up eventually 2) spend time to calm them by giving them your time....this can be a lengthy process but theory is you have a dog which is calmer and confident and no traumas. I think it depends on your dog and you'll get to know what they are like. I'm in camp 2 and think building a dog that doesn't suffer with anxiety is really worthwhile. DTAS is a great resource on Facebook with loads of advice on sleeping (Dog Training Advice and Support)

Several sites with similar name but the image shows their profile.

Best advice I can think of is don't rush anything, lower your expectations. This will not last... (lack of sleep feels like F O R E V E R ). They are babies, taken away from mum. We must assume that role and give reassurance and comfort

Jonesy2190 · 14/11/2021 18:28

@WomblingKnobhead thank you so much, I had joined a FB group of the same name but not that one! I think we're camp 2 as well, just seeing him in so much pain yesterday made me feel so awful, we'll try building him up and maybe take turns napping! Thank you

TerrierOrTerror · 14/11/2021 18:31

TerrorPup has had a very intense weekend - through various reasons outside of our control we ended up having to take her into central London with us. She's done trains and overground tubes (short journeys) before but this was her first proper underground trip, first time on an escalator (carried), and some very, very busy streets. She blew me away with how well she coped to be honest, although she was a very tired dog when we got home!

Very proud dog mum - we have a lot of things to work on but I really don't give her enough credit.

LadyCatStark · 14/11/2021 18:54

@TerrierOrTerror Billy’s mind would be blown by central London! Just a small market town was a whole new world to him today 😂. Well done TerrorPup!

GuyFawkesDay · 14/11/2021 19:02

I am really glad we have taken it slow and kind with sleep. I mean I've nearly gone demented with sleep disturbance but actually he's slowly turning into a really lovely dog.

@WomblingKnobhead hahahah tempting but newsflash DH has said the dog can sleep on the bed!!! I mean I will try and do downstairs but the dog is properly a mummy's boy 🤣🤣🤣

TBH he's been absolutely amazing today. He's also the gummiest looking puppy, he's losing all his canines at the same time and the new ones are pushing through. He looks like and old man.

WomblingKnobhead · 14/11/2021 19:23

Merli's teeth are practically through as he loses them. He met a 10 Yr old lab today. Overweight and looking her age....but he was in love. Well...lust. Lust and obvious lust. If you imagine pelvis contortions repeatedly whilst he stared her down and panted. Repeatedly. I was horrified. I own a sex pest

TerrierOrTerror · 14/11/2021 19:44

@LadyCatStark tbf she is a fair bit older than most if not all of the pups on this thread. The first time we started taking her properly out and about (not just carried) she clearly found it far too much. But central London was a BIG step up from anything we've ever done before so I'm chuffed with her.

I should probably leave this thread soon, but I've found it the place I can be most honest (dog training groups can be a bit preachy, and for some reason a lot of breed groups are still full of outdated pack theory). Plus my breed take a long time to mature so I still refer to her as a puppy...

bargelights · 14/11/2021 19:49

We were out for a walk today and by complete accident met one of our pup's littermates! The breeder is local to us but most of the pups were taken by people who live a fair distance away. It was so much fun to see one of his brothers. The owners were impressed by how calm our pup was. He'd just had a good off-lead romp with his doggy pals so that mostly explains it!

LadyCatStark · 14/11/2021 19:51

Awww @TerrierOrTerror everyone is welcome! To be fair Billy is nearly 8 months, he’s just such a country bumpkin that pavements are still a novelty to him 😂. He can cope with massive tractors and combine harvesters going past him but not busses…
