@lifestooshortandsoami I'd give a chew or lickimat or Kong and see if that helps settle them down.

They go through phases of bring total twats like that though where they don't sleep then get overtired and are VILE. Hard work!! Hope pup sleeps soon x
Have tried giving him a chew and his favourite toy to chew but he just has a right strop and even digs at the bottom of the crate and barks. It’s so frustrating as I know he’s tired and if I get him out again he’s W nightmare. He sleeps well at night so I shouldn’t complain but the days where he’s overtired and bitey and won’t sleep feel hard work! Especially when trying to work/ do the school run etc etc
Sorry for the whinge Grin love reading everyone’s updates on their pups

DottyHarmer · 11/11/2021 17:15

Neutering is such a difficult decision. A friend who works with assistance dogs says they are all done at 6 months, but current thinking says as late or possible or never. But most of us have family pets, and, as @GuyFawkesDay says, dogs can’t go to daycare/dog boarding etc if they are intact.

Also depends on the dog. My dog was, I’m afraid to say, rampant . No cushion was safe. He would stop at certain houses on a walk and lie down and he howled at the lady sausage dog over the road. The final straw was when dd had a friend round and dd ran into the kitchen and said, “Mummy, I think Dog fancies Sophie”. Sophie was standing on the coffee table with Dog pursuing her…. He was down the vet’s the next day

Aria20 · 11/11/2021 17:19

@DottyHarmer lol that is funny your dog harassing everyone and everything! Good point about assistance dogs, I did think about that earlier actually that if someone needed their guide dog etc for every day life they couldn't just not go out for several weeks.... but I guess assistance dogs don't get homed with their new owners until they are fully trained and older anyway.

Goawayangryman · 11/11/2021 17:51

Oh I'm laughing at the randy dog, @DottyHarmer sorry! haha.

Yes to them going through twatty phases. So true. Only so much you can do to force sleep. Mine does not do well on that front if either under-exercised or under-fed. Once I upped both of those, order was restored, although also odour, because all that extra meat.... Envy not envy

bargelights · 11/11/2021 18:15

My previous dog (a rescue) was neutered before we got him, taking the decision out of our hands. We are planning to have the pup neutered, though I've been agonising over when to do it. The vet said between 8 and 12 months would be fine, though 8 months seems too young to me.

WomblingKnobhead · 11/11/2021 18:23

Adolescence check at the vet and they asked me about castration 😵 He's 5 months!!!! No is the answer. He's keeping his testicles unless I have a reason to remove. Apparently he has one ear infection and was very upset at being checked in the ears. I'm now supposed to clean them....no idea how. He's wriggling and resistant. He weighs 22.6kg. Titch

GuyFawkesDay · 11/11/2021 18:38

I will out and groomers clean them but I have got ear cleaning fluid with him being a spaniel I do put some down every few weeks as I know they're probe to grotty ears It main involves free flowing squeezy cheese from one person and me putting the cleaner in and squishing it round a bit

casinoroyale4ever · 11/11/2021 18:48

It's funny, my last pup was 16 years ago and he was done at 6 months as a totally humpy pain and needed to go to walker. He had the most beautiful coat his whole long life, I cannot imagine it could've been any more shiny even as a very old dog.

It's amazing how thinking has changed - setter coats take a real beating if neutered so I sympathise with the dilemma but the same thing occurs - I don't want a pet dog trying to jump everyone forever....

We'll see when we get there.

GuyFawkesDay · 11/11/2021 18:54

We definitely still have little acorns here not proper nuts 🤣🤣🤣

The worst dog I ever met for humping were my friend's cocker spaniel who we used to wind up as teens (so bad!) And another friends (female) Bassett hound who was known as "rent a bonk" as she was dreadful! Humped anything and anyone. At least the spaniel stuck to his bed!!!

MrsHerculePoirot · 11/11/2021 19:17

Our vet no longe neuters made dogs as standard. They take each case individually. Females they advise to after two seasons because it lowers their risk of various cancers but male dogs it increases the risk for some so 🤷‍♀️ He said also to try to leave as long as possible if we do want to do it so hormone surge has been and gone back to normal.

GuyFawkesDay · 11/11/2021 19:24

Our vet said the risk of increased bone cancers etc in male dogs was more prevalent in larger breeds than small, as they mature later and so need neutering later, if at all. With a cocker spaniel she thought around 12 months should be ok as long as he's not too "boisterous". I would consider chemical castration too.

tizwozliz · 11/11/2021 19:25

Ada is 6 months old today! Currently chewing a furry rabbit ear as distraction from chewing cushions

She's gorgeous @tizwozliz. And definitely looks more dog than puppy in the last pic!

tizwozliz · 11/11/2021 19:33

Photos are 4 weeks, 2 months and 6 months

GuyFawkesDay · 11/11/2021 19:37

She's such a bonny dog @tizwozliz

Aria20 · 11/11/2021 19:51

@Goawayangryman lol at the extra odour... mine def has an odour after a long walk, almost like a sweaty smell and it's not damp dog smell it's different

Aria20 · 11/11/2021 19:54

@WomblingKnobhead @GuyFawkesDay mine has had a couple of nasty ear infections so I clean them once a week, more if needed. She doesn't particularly like the ear cleaning fluid though so I tend to use special dog ear cleaning finger wipes which she doesn't mind. Initially it was a two person job with treats but now she'll just let me do it. When she had the nasty ear infections we had to have one, sometimes two people holding her down while the other administered the drops as it was obv painful and she'd growl and snap!

Aria20 · 11/11/2021 19:58

@tizwozliz wow so big and grown up looking at 6 months! The second chewing phase passed reasonably quickly for us I think 2 weeks and it was gone so hopefully will be quick for you too. I was having to sew up soft toys and her bed frequently as she kept chewing them but it's all calmed down and I didn't change anything so it was just a phase!

cheeseisthebest · 11/11/2021 21:30

Love her wrinkles above her eyes! Beautiful.

MsAwesomeDragon · 11/11/2021 21:37

This is AwesomePup sporting his new light up collar. He's had 2 already but has managed to pull them off in the middle of the woods, so we've upgraded to one with a much better clasp. Still cheap though, as it's a B&M find.

AwesomePup is so handsome!

cheeseisthebest · 11/11/2021 22:24

Beautiful!

LegsMiserables · 11/11/2021 22:39

Gorgeous. I love that collar. It's very festive.

DottyHarmer · 12/11/2021 09:03

Lovely dogs….

My lovely boy died of bone cancer and I have beaten myself up about his castration (though it was done at 13 months, so not very early). His siblings were all done at various times, but they are all going strong, so I don’t know….

Aria20 · 12/11/2021 09:07

@DottyHarmer don't beat yourself up! We can only make the decisions based on the available at the time. 13 is a good age for a dog and it's so rare a dog dies of natural old age xx
