That's interesting @LadyCatStark. I bet dh could get nominated and seconded, his boss is probably in a gun dog club if there is such a thing, and the breeder we bought him from goes on the same hunts so is probably in the same club if there is one. I don't want dh to be the one to go though, I want to go (and seeing as I'm the one who drives I would have to drive them anyway). Dh has already been invited to go to a shoot with them, as it's all who you know isn't it? DH isn't interested in going to any clubs, and thinks pup is well trained anyway (he's never seen him lie down and refuse to move when there's a dog he wants to play with, or go tearing off after a rabbit)

LadyCatStark · 10/11/2021 21:58

Yes it’s definitely who you know! We’re in prime gun dog country but don’t know anyone who actually shoots or anything like that.

Goawayangryman · 10/11/2021 22:01

Oh god mine does that stopping thing too. I don't know how to address it except with really over enthusiastic "let's goooooo'" which makes us both look like knobheads.

I went out and left mine for 2.5 hrs alone this evening. She only bloody slept the whole time.. well, after 20 minutes of protest yapping. I couldn't believe it!

Goawayangryman · 10/11/2021 22:03

Those TP link cameras are amazing. Two way audio to freak the dog out and they rotate and everything. Gave me some peace of mind. Under £30 a pop.

GuyFawkesDay · 10/11/2021 22:09

I think I might get some of those!

I let FawkesPup off lead tonight to chase his tennis ball and his (HUGE) Rhodesian Ridgeback mate bounded over. They ran round like little n large for 5 minutes and then I had a major panic about recall but he suddenly realised he was a long way from me when I whistled, and shot back full pelt so hurrah for that. He's also bleeding from his poor sore gums today so obviously he's basically biting everyone constantly too.

Luckily he has been good on his walk with DH and got a slice of bacon from the cafe lady this morning for giving a paw 🤦‍♀️

I sound like a loon too, I use "go on" as his release cue and it's stuck purely by accident. It sounds more like goon when I shout it 🤣

Managed to find a gundog trainer nearby who says he's the perfect age to start so hoping to sign up for after Xmas.

LegsMiserables · 11/11/2021 01:45

LegsPup is just back from his first walk with a dog walker/sitter (not dog napper as DD said!) and is sparko in his crate. She said his recall was brilliant. Thank god. I was terrified when they set off and she said that she doesn't like to use treats to recall dogs. I made her take some just in case.

So he's had a big play and a walk with a moodle and a cross between a Great Dane and a Dalmatian! I'm hoping for a quiet afternoon! He also did not wee in her van, which I thought was very good manners.

Do any of you do Sexier than a Squirrel? Is the 25 day challenge worth doing? TIA

GuyFawkesDay · 11/11/2021 04:59

I've heard good things but not used it myself

casinoroyale4ever · 11/11/2021 08:39

Sexier than a squirrel looks good, setter pup is settling in brilliantly but I'm terrified of the recall training, he is very easily distracted, even from his food!

Goawayangryman · 11/11/2021 10:19

I'm going to look up this sexier than a squirrel thing.

Something very odd has happened to my pup... she usually sticks to me like glue. After last night's abandonment (!) she has been pottering around the house quite independently and even settled down for a good chew for an hour in her actual bed (as opposed to on my feet)....

No doubt the next time I go out all hell will break loose just to learn me.

TerrierOrTerror · 11/11/2021 10:51

Finding TerrorPups second season tough - mainly on my own mental health as street walks just don't bring me any leave of peace. Plus I feel constantly on edge as there are SO many schools around us and we had an incident a few months ago with a child running up and grabbing my dogs face.

I also am slightly concerned she's having a split season. She's really clean and so signs of bleeding are minimal (same on her first season) but swelling seems to have reduced already. That said bumped into our neighbour as we came back earlier and her cockerpoo was definitely still interested.

Aria20 · 11/11/2021 12:28

@TerrierOrTerror how long has she been in season were day 11 of bleeding, she's mostly cleaning herself with minimal spots on carpet and the swelling has reduced loads. Also on pavement walks but varying them up lots and as a plus of all the pavement walks she now walks very nicely. I am crossing over or changing direction when I see other dogs but it is hard work... can't wait to be able to go to fields/woods again and let her have a good run!

@Aria20 it's difficult because she has never dripped or marked our sofa. But we're around 2 weeks in we think - based on increased urination, swelling, licking and her smell. And the fact that she's super sleepy. We did 4 weeks of street walks last time, but we hadn't really built up to particularly exciting midweek walks by that point so it felt easier.

Aria20 · 11/11/2021 12:57

It's tricky to know isn't it. I'm going by obvious spots of blood I saw on floor but she had signs of slight swelling, licking herself a lot and weeing more and friends boy dogs starting to pay more attention to her and her snapping at them for a week or more before the obvious spots of blood! I wish there was an obvious it's over now sign so I could shampoo the carpets and wash all her bedding without needing to do it again in a few days lol and go back to walking her properly! She gave me sad eyes as we walked past the park today, it was empty but I decided against it as normally gets busy with dogs after school drop off time!

Are you getting her spayed after this season? I think I will as she'll be 1 in 3 months so I'm hoping fully mature and grown.

MrsHerculePoirot · 11/11/2021 13:00

I signed up to sexier than squirrel. We haven’t done it all but it definitely builds a bond/makes you be the fun person. We play the games in house/garden then out of sniffy walk and generally acted like CBeebies presenters and it does help. We find PoirotPup gets too excited in the house though so we do that more calmly now 🤣

Where from? I need one!! I just went out and left him for 20 mins I've finally done it. And it was ok. Well I think he barked the whole time!
TerrierOrTerror · 11/11/2021 13:19

@Aria20 so difficult to tell, luckily no carpet here so other than a slightly more regular rotation of blankets (mainly as she smells quite strong at the moment, no drops at all) we're doing ok. Both of neighbours have intact young males so we're able to tell fairly easily if she's still attractive or not.

She'll most likely be spayed after this one. Her first she was 8 months and based on breed advice we felt it was too soon. She's matured a LOT since then so we think it was the right decision to hold off. We just need to be able to time the op well, she reacted badly to the GA for a dental op as a puppy so we need to make sure we're able to take AL to be able to monitor her.

Aria20 · 11/11/2021 14:17

@TerrierOrTerror interesting to hear some wait for two seasons before spaying. Vet said 3 months after first season would be fine.... and practically it would be easier if we need to use a boarding facility next summer as they all want them spayed. In what ways have you noticed yours has matured more in between?

tizwozliz · 11/11/2021 14:48

I think it's quite breed dependent. We would like our lab to be over 1 and finished growing before spaying so if she has her first season at say 7 months we will let her have two seasons

Goawayangryman · 11/11/2021 15:14

Definitely breed-dependent. I wouldn't spay until after 18 months with my dog, but then she is a GR and they take a long time to mature.
Something doesn't sit quite right with me about removing a really vital part of the anatomy.....

@Goawayangryman good ol' bad ol' Amazon - here

They go up and down in price so might be worth waiting for a reduction. I've got the whole of the bottom of the house covered, it's like a stalker's paradise :)

tizwozliz · 11/11/2021 15:19

Argos stock the tapo cameras too

Goawayangryman · 11/11/2021 15:27

Or let's try that again. @cheeseisthebest link for cameras above, but instead of tagging you I tagged myself.... clearly still needing more sleep.

Aria20 · 11/11/2021 16:13

@tizwozliz she will be exactly 1 if I have her spayed 3 months after this cycle. She is a spaniel so classed as small/medium breed so should be done growing by then...

lifestooshortandsoami · 11/11/2021 16:58

14 week old pup doing a little bit better for the nipping but getting him to sleep in the day at the moment is a nightmare! I thought we’d got in a good routine where he was sleeping at least a good hour at a time but this week I’m lucky if he sleeps more than an hour at a time and today he’s only had one hr sleep and one half hour since 6:15am / he seems overtired but just won’t settle unless he’s in the crate- but this week he’s not even sleeping when we put him in the crate. He’s currently having a right tantrum pulling all
His bed and blanket all over the crate Hmm should he be sleeping more than - do I keep enforcing it or just give in???

GuyFawkesDay · 11/11/2021 17:03

I'm still to-ing and fro-ing about neutering FawkesPup. Part of me wants to wait as late as I can so I will get him as close to 1 as possible. Give him chance for the hormones to do their job. Vet says as he's a confident dog it'll be ok whenever bit I want him to have the benefit of the hormone boost.

But yet if he has to go to daycare/with walker then he needs the chop. Hard decision!

Had a lovely walk tonight getting 30 minutes field walk, ball flinging and back down the private road. He's really coming on with loose lead walking, and is actively putting himself on my left and into the right position which is fab. He might be a loon half the time bit he's a good lad.

GuyFawkesDay · 11/11/2021 17:04

@lifestooshortandsoami I'd give a chew or lickimat or Kong and see if that helps settle them down.

They go through phases of bring total twats like that though where they don't sleep then get overtired and are VILE. Hard work!! Hope pup sleeps soon x
