My post about Eden was a possible point to help owners with dogs with loose poosGuyFawkesDay you have no issue with that so all good .

GuyFawkesDay · 07/11/2021 13:50

No it's interesting because mine has had the loose poo! I've added kongs with grated carrot and pumpkin puree in them and it's helped so I'm now doubting the advice I was given about the food.

I'm having a look for a good long term option so all advice very gratefully received!

DottyHarmer · 07/11/2021 13:59

Hope I can join here - new puppy arriving soon Grin ….
What have I done ? Shock

On the food front, my last dog was terribly fussy about food - well, dog food. I tried many brands, starting with the poshest stuff. He would eat it half-heartedly. I remember he took one sniff of Burns and retched. In the end we arrived at Harrington’s with some wet food on top. I guess some dogs (like humans) like a basic diet and no fancy stuff. He won a Chappie hamper in his dog training Christmas raffle (!) and he wolfed a tin of that down. It felt mean to persevere with Michelin star dog food when he really preferred Weatherspoons…

As for treats - he hated dog treats. His all-time favourite snack was to share a buttered crumpet with me Sad . He was such a good mate.

DottyHarmer · 07/11/2021 14:02

Btw Harrington’s resulted in nice, solid, pick-uppable poo. The aftermath of some of his thieving successes were not pretty.

bargelights · 07/11/2021 14:48

@DottyHarmer welcome to the thread. What breed is your new puppy?

DottyHarmer · 07/11/2021 15:08

A golden retriever - I’m a glutton for hairy punishment !

bargelights · 07/11/2021 15:17

Oh, they are such lovely dogs. There was a golden retriever in our puppy class. She was so sweet and absolutely adorable.

LadyCatStark · 07/11/2021 15:27
@tizwozliz mine went off food at same age for a week or so I thought it might be due to possibly coming into season but apparently between 8-9 months when adolescence starts they have a phase of teething again as the new teeth settle into the gums fully.

She did go off her food again though for a few days when she started her season.
Ah ha! @Aria20 I think you may have stumbled upon the reason for Billy’s wall eating! He isn’t quite 8 months yet but I think he lost his puppy teeth a tad early and he seems to have a strong urge to ‘nibble’ at the moment (mainly my hand) which he hasn’t had since he lost his puppy teeth. Perhaps his front teeth are settling now? His horn seems to be working and has stopped smelling now (or I age got used to it which is more worrying 😂).

MsAwesomeDragon · 07/11/2021 15:53

@GuyFawkesDay

Oh the lakes heritage is WCF!!! They used to have great (cheap!) Petrol stations in the 90s along with belting horsey shops😂
They've still got the belting horsey shops, but they've also got supplies for other pets as well. That's where we go to bulk buy dog food and wood shavings and hay for the Guinea pigs. They're so helpful in there. We bought pup's harness there too as they helped us fit it and figure out what we actually wanted. I love WCF. No petrol stations though.
WomblingKnobhead · 07/11/2021 15:56

I can't decide whether I'm being thick or it's a typo but @LadyCatStark what is Billy's working horn. My mind is boggling

WomblingKnobhead · 07/11/2021 16:00

I've taken Merli for his usual early walk 30min or so then went out for a swim and he did lots of swimming....then surprisingly stayed awake though lunch. Another walk and he chased Princess terrier and others and now is 😴😴😴😴😴😴

I whistled from the sea and he swam out to me but wanted to touch so just kept coming. Anyone who has swum with a dog will tell you to keep clear of the paws. It's like being damaged in propellers!!! My arms are shredded

tizwozliz · 07/11/2021 16:46

So jealous of your swimming puppy, Ada still hasn't taken the plunge. She stood crying chest deep in the water today as the stick she wanted was out of her depth. Going to research puppy swimming classes, I think as soon as she learns she can there'll be no stopping her as she always straight in for a paddle.

I want to swim with her next summer (my open water temp limit is around 15 degrees so too cold now for me)

tizwozliz · 07/11/2021 17:02

Stick just out of reach!

Puppy survival thread. Oct/Nov fireworks!
WomblingKnobhead · 07/11/2021 17:17

Aw poor Ada. He started at about 4 months and one day just lifted off having waded like that and never looked back.

Aria20 · 07/11/2021 17:53

@tizwozliz ahh bless her mine is the same just a paddle and out. She can swim as she followed another dog in once and got a shock at the depth but she got herself out. Maybe Ada needs to follow another dog in or a ball if she likes a ball?

Goawayangryman · 07/11/2021 18:29

Hah we have also been swimming today... Well, paddling and haring round after older dogs. Th pup is knackered and asleep on the sofa all well and smelly. Urgh.

@DottyHarmer the best breed biased

Hope you have lots of fun with yours

Goawayangryman · 07/11/2021 18:29

Wet. The shower was really unpopular but she stank so it was a non negotiable..

MsAwesomeDragon · 07/11/2021 18:43

AwesomePup went swimming today as well. The river was quite high though so we kept him on the long lead so we could help him out if he needed it. He had a marvellous time!!!

bargelights · 07/11/2021 19:04

I’m so happy that we have found some puppy friends at last. He has had a brilliant time playing with Oliver (pointer/Weimaraner) and Rosie (border collie/poodle and just one day younger than him). Very nice friendly owners too.

DH wanted to take him for a swim too, but it was so muddy that we decided against it. The pup loves the water (unlike our last dog) and DH’s dearest wish is to have a canine swimming companion. Hopefully they will swim together next summer.

GuyFawkesDay · 07/11/2021 19:11

Mine had a wade in the mud/remnants of the cow manure on the side of the field this morning.

As you can imagine, he's had a bath. With 2 rounds of shampoo. Stunk to high heaven!!!!

It's a good job he is cute

LadyCatStark · 07/11/2021 19:37

@WomblingKnobhead

I can't decide whether I'm being thick or it's a typo but *@LadyCatStark* what is Billy's working horn. My mind is boggling
😂 it’s a buffalo horn!
BaconAndAvocado · 07/11/2021 20:12

Newboy the Lab has finally got his toes wet in the sea!

I thought by now he would be a complete water baby as everyone told me that Labs adore the water.

It took a group of departing sandpipers to entice him in almost up to his belly.
Fantastic to see 😊

cheeseisthebest · 07/11/2021 20:57

Mines never been in water. Is that bad!

GuyFawkesDay · 07/11/2021 21:18

Mine hasn't been in outside water more than deep puddle yet. He desperately wants to though, he was trying to get into Fairhaven lake in half term (full of eels and a bit icky!) And I suspect will be typical spaniel in this respect too.

Once we start the longer walks we will be on the canal towpaths a lot so I suspect I'll be hosting him off regularly.

Starting to be a bit concerned about his behaviour towards kids and me. He's play bowing and barking/jumping up to bite. Partly I think he just wants to play and is going about it wrong but equally I am wondering if he's starting to guard the sofa a bit. Going to rethink training/boundaries I think.

Goawayangryman · 07/11/2021 21:32

@GuyFawkesDay I think ?? That is normal but I am no expert. Ours does not play bow but certainly still jumps up to try for a nose or an earlobe when over excited. I think she needs doggy pal corrections and so she is going to daycare 2* per week for the next month. It is a bit ... Alarming.

Old-fashioned as it is, ours has also been getting some heavy glowering, physical blocking and forceful "no" responses.
