She is not fat

I have a 4 year old Pug. She is gorgeous. I feed her once a day at teatime and she scoffs the lot. She gets an odd titbit in between such as the end of my toast in the morning but that is all.

She gets exercise every day with me. We go for long walks off the lead through the woods and when we get home she is tired.
I get fed up of people saying she is tubby. She is never going to be slim, but she is solidly built and stocky.
I meet other people with Pugs and they all look the same to me.
Stop saying she is fat. It annoys me when I put my heart and soul into looking after this little dog.
It's people like you who say whippets are too thin
Thank you

you as in not personally

What does the vet say?

Anordinarymum · 05/10/2021 12:34

@Soyouthought

What does the vet say?
He says she is perfect!

I always go on the rib test. You should be able to feel them with gentle pressure. If not they are too fat.
Who is commenting? Often people struggle when they compare different breeds.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 05/10/2021 12:41

Objectively, most dogs are overweight and using other dogs as a barometer to measure isn’t a great idea, as many people overfeed their dog. If I made sure my lab was the same as every other lab, he’d be quite a bit overweight. Dogs can also be overweight if they’re only being fed once and are exercising, it depends on how much is being fed, the dog’s metabolism and how much exercise is done etc.

However, if the vet says they’re fine, they’re fine. No point getting upset about it otherwise you’d be upset all the time. People are often telling me my dogs are underweight but I know they’re fine.

BrilliantBulb · 05/10/2021 12:42

Pugs are chunky little things. Unless it’s another pug owner saying this to you and you’re 100% sure that her body score is ideal then I wouldn’t worry.

BrilliantBulb · 05/10/2021 12:44

Sorry, I didn’t attach the body score chart. Here it is.

Wolfiefan · 05/10/2021 12:46

That’s a great chart. I’ve got a non pug version for my dogs from the vet.

You only feed her once a day? Sad couldn’t you split her one meal into two? I’d hate to have to go the whole day before eating.

curiouscatgotkilled · 05/10/2021 13:00

Bit sad to just feed her once a day. Cant she have half her meal for breakfast? no wonder she scoffs it so fast she must be so hungry!

Powertothepetal · 05/10/2021 13:06

I suspect your pug is indeed fat tbh.
I have seen slim pugs and like any other dog there is a defined waist and being short haired you can often see a faint outline of the rib cage when they are moving.

A ‘chunky’ pug is a fat pug imo

tabulahrasa · 05/10/2021 13:11

Well not to be mean, but if you meet other pugs and she looks the same then she’s unlikely to be at an ideal weight... because it’s really really rare to see one who is. Most are overweight.

A pug is always going to be pug shaped obviously, but they can also be pug shaped and slim...

RunningFromInsanity · 05/10/2021 13:13

I only feed my dog once a day.
It’s not that uncommon and there are studies that suggest canines should not be continually digesting and need ‘gut rest’.

pugname · 05/10/2021 13:24

Pugs are definitely barrel shaped but they should still have the waist tuck and be able to feel their ribs. Mine is 1.5 now and Ben same size since he was about 9 months. He's a chunk but a nice shape for a pug, vet is more than happy

Yes, this was my decision. She gets fed when I have my meal. Looking at the chart supplied by brilliantbulb she is not overweight at all.

What I was saying in effect was that people make snap judgements about all sorts of things such as Labradors are fat and Whippets are undernourished................ and pugs are not fat !

And the body.
We meet quite a few pugs. Most are fat. Rolls. No tuck up.

I am a technophobe. I would post a pic but I don't know how to do it.

Powertothepetal · 05/10/2021 13:39

I agree with PP, needs photos to judge but she is probably overweight.

Like wolfiefan said, most of them look like literal barrels with rolls and no tuck up in the waist and that isn’t how they are built, it is because their owners have let them get fat.

Ok being dim now... I have a photo on my phone... what next?

The problem is with little dogs, is they are often over fed pampered little pooches. (And I say this with two pampered little pooches myself Grin)

I have seen some seriously over fed pugs but they are a natural stocky breed so I would expect them to be a bit solid on the side
