I don't like my puppy

And I hate myself - she's taken over my life I know puppies do (okay I forgot it's been 12 years) and she's a dear little thing but the biting, chewing, training, eating schedule and endless trips to the garden just to come in and find a poo on the rug

I'm exhausted all the time - I don't feel like I love her is this normal? I'm really hoping someone will tell me it's too soon I've only had her 5 weeks and the love will grow?

All I remember is I loved my last dog from the second he arrived and I didn't even care how much work he was, I loved every inch of him every second of the day

Why don't I feel like that??

@Tealandabney a firm NO works for a lot of our unwanted behaviour too but you have to be on it, the best is anticipating a jump or a nip and stopping it before it happens

Tealandabney · 23/10/2021 11:38

Yes absolutely. It’s where we went wrong for a while - telling off after behaviour starts, you need to anticipate that it’s just about to happen

Cait73 · 23/10/2021 11:55

We're now having a problem with barking which is impossible to anticipate it's very random

Tealandabney · 23/10/2021 11:57

Yeah barking is a tricky one

Cait73 · 23/10/2021 14:02

My last dog rarely barked, this one is a yapper I just can't deal!!

Gorgeous !

Cait73 · 14/11/2021 10:46

@Floralnomad we're part way through our 8 week training block, it's made ALL the difference she's still scared of people which worries me but she's making progress and you should see her with the youngster it would melt you, they're stuck together 24/7

I’m so pleased that you stuck with it @Cait73 , she will be a lovely companion for your grandson .

XelaM · 14/11/2021 14:35

Awwww I'm so glad!!! Peggy has to be some kind of beauty queen. She is absolutely stunning 😍 have you considered doggie modelling?

lollipopsandrainbows · 14/11/2021 15:53

She looks the spit of my Lhasa boy. Very similar to a Shitz in terms of temperament. So they can be very stubborn and difficult to train. As for the barking, we have one that does, and one which doesn't. We use an empty water bottle and crackle it as a distraction, that seems to work. Both have been to training classes but neither have good recall and one wants to kill everything in its sight!

Cait73 · 14/11/2021 16:36

@lollipopsandrainbows good shout with the water bottle I'll try that, thank you

My choc Labrador is 13 months now and gorgeous. We’ve replaced 3 remote controls and 1 pair of glasses a book I was reading and the hosepipe!! The first few months were hard, teething was hard and I couldn’t remember our first dog behaving like this! One thing that did work was making her nap every 2 hours, I used to pick her up with a chewy toy to bite and cuddle her, when she was overtired she was a horror. She’s gorgeous now and much calmer, still has thieving tendencies but will come and show me what she’s stolen! Persevere, you will love your pup.

Cait73 · 22/11/2021 22:12

@Moll2020 lol Peggy always brings me her victims too it's so funny

If mine could point she would come in look at me, point to her mouth and say “look what I’ve got” then run and expect a game of chase either round the garden or the coffee table!! Little sod!

LitCrit · 22/11/2021 23:26

I just read all your posts from the beginning OP - this is the best thread!
Just wanted to say that you’ve clearly had a very hard couple of years and your fortitude and resilience shine through. Lucky pup, lucky toddler. Best of luck!

Cait73 · 23/11/2021 18:34

@LitCrit what lovely words, thank you!

Me and THE BEST DOG IN THE WORLD!! Had to revisit this, I know many people go through “puppy blues” I can’t believe how much I hated this precious little soul, I don’t beat myself up anymore we have the most wonderful life together.

Peggy has taught me so more in 10 months than any book, course or seminar ever could and I’m so grateful for that. I misunderstood Peggy completely and I think she misunderstood me, but we now share more love than I could ever have imagined back in those (very) bleak first few months

if you’re struggling with your puppy, don’t give up, there are better days ahead, I promise ❤️
