Omg I never start ongoing threads like this!
Back to school for my lot tomorrow. Taken pup for an evening walk tonight, desperately trying to tire him out! He's struggled to nap today as felt too hot.

To be clear, she goes PROPER zoomies. It's not just a bit of yapping and high spirits

GuyFawkesDay · 09/09/2021 20:20

Oh no! FawkesPup gets super excited and that means peeing on the floor. We use the pen and a something exciting and that can distract him long enough to calm down but tbh he's a part. Also has the sharp claws.

Wish I had some answers but I have a tit of a spaniel too

TheBigMacDougal · 09/09/2021 20:36

@opalescent I have started to out Mac pup on the lead if MIL comes over as she doesn’t like him jumping at her. I also sometimes do it if our youngest is around and just step on it to deny him close enough access. He whines a bit, but our trainer preaches that if they can’t practice something they can’t rehearse getting their rocks off to it 🤷🏼‍♀️

At 14 weeks I think Mac pup jumps up more than he was a couple of weeks ago, so hopefully it’s just getting worse before it gets better.

Does anyone find that evening walks make pup wappy? I’ve tried twice to take Mac out at 7ish for a short walk. He ends up bombing it around the field and then turns in to a mouthy turd.

His mouthyness has also increased in the last week… do they get more turdlike before they comes nice? Just before the teenage phase hits 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

TheBigMacDougal · 09/09/2021 20:37
  • to put him on the lead
GuyFawkesDay · 09/09/2021 20:46

Mine always has mega zoomies at the end of the afternoon/evening walk. It's basically like having a horse galloping on the end of a lunge line round and round. Bloody idiot. To be fair to him, he's been fantastic with his recall and stay training before that and then we go for a good sniffy walk and then on the way back towards home he goes bananas 🤣

Lots of jumping up and landshark here too. The jumping is easy to manage out as I take the primula and he only gets a lock of that when his furry little butt is on the floor and he's grasped that pretty quickly (mainly by sitting a lot 😆) so I wondering whether to expand the primula rations to other scenarios.

Still peeing on the kitchen floor a few times a day too. Aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrggghhh

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 09/09/2021 21:21

We have just had our first outside lead walk. I took pup and dog which is tricky. Dog is great off lead but has never been lead trained so until we get to an area she can go off lead she's just pulling on extendable. Pup is then trying to keep up. He did pretty well all things considered. Came home and mega zoomies though. DH being grumpy arse (because I have dared to be cross about the general lack of domestics)

I'm looking at daycare which is ridiculous with two other adults at home but since neither of them want to actually do it I feel I have no choice

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 09/09/2021 21:24

Huge great pee on the floor. First for days and whilst I was working tonight because I didn't get enough done today because of constant interruptions. He can't even keep an eye on that

Aria20 · 09/09/2021 21:36

@opalescent I put pup on lead when visitors and get her to settle on her mat beside me with a lamb braid and then when all is calm she can say hello - def stops the crazy! She finally stopped the excited wee when visitors come at 6 months!

ilovesushi · 09/09/2021 21:53

@MakeMeCleanTheHouse @tizwozliz I think you are completely right about taking calculated risks. Our vet's opinion was that on balance it is better to take your pup out and about before fully vaccinated in quiet areas to explore the environment. We didn't as we had this conversation after her second jab, but wished we had as we were all climbing the walls and our pup settled down into a calmer, more lovely, happier pup once she could get out. I would say maybe talk to your vet to get more info about the risk in your area. Then you can just get on with whatever seems right and not worry or feel guilty.

GuyFawkesDay · 10/09/2021 07:03

I wish I had too, but we live close to farmland and I wasn't confident enough. Though was lucky to have vaccinated puppies and dogs of friends so we went to their homes which I think helped.

FawkesPup slept. All night. Woke at 4:30 for a wee and settled back in the crate without whining. I even got dressed at 6 without him whining. Such a relief. Wondering if 2 days home with DH and he's just letting go of me a bit? Last night he went in his bed in the study with him rather than sitting at my feet for the first time ever. God I hope it's not a one off!!!

tizwozliz · 10/09/2021 07:11

We had a good night too. Now I'm just waiting for the day when she sleeps all night and I sleep all night without waking up to check on her because she's been so quiet!

Aria20 · 10/09/2021 07:35

Puppy class was half outside pavement walks last night and pup was naughty!! She's normally really good walking nicely loose lead when it's just us but because there were 4 other dogs she just wanted to get to them to play! If she doesn't calm down on these walks in the next 5 weeks she won't pass her silver level lol. It's not something I can practice easily at home either as she's fine walking then it's just not being distracted around the other dogs that's proving tricky!

Anyone who has a solid "watch me" even in distracting environments got any tips? Ours is fine at home but not around distractions feel like I need to go back to basics!

MightyMeerkat · 10/09/2021 07:37

That's great news @GuyFawkesDay and @tizwozliz

MightyPup started at daycare on Wednesday. She has 3 new doggy friends and seems to be loving it. In fact, I swear she doesn't want to come home! I was hoping all the fun and exercise would wear her out but nope! She's still full on as soon as she gets home, sleeps for a couple of hours whilst I watch TV and then she's rating to go all night 🤪 She is still whining a lot when I put her to bed so I'm still sleeping by her for now.

The toilet training seems to have gone backwards too. She goes out and then comes inside to do her business. I don't know why. Yesterday could have been the rain but she's doing it all the time. I've tried taking her out to go but she still comes back in to go 🤨 Sounds similar to yours @GuyFawkesDay Could it be a spaniel thing?!?

GuyFawkesDay · 10/09/2021 08:16

@MightyMeerkat Possibly. I am taking the blame for us as we stopped reminding him so often and he was going out himself but people weren't noticing and praising so he just figured he'd go wherever as nobody cared??!! Maybe it's a "too smart for their own blooming good" spaniel thing??!!! Or it could be their age. Who knows. I just keep repeating "it's just a phase" like when the kids were tiny.

MightyMeerkat · 10/09/2021 08:57

@GuyFawkesDay Sadly I don't have that excuse as I take her out, repeat toilet so often I want to go myself, and then she comes back in and goes. Grr. I wonder sometimes if she's secretly laughing at me 😂

BaconAndAvocado · 10/09/2021 09:14

Newboy was up at 12 and 4:30 but it didn't feel so bad as DH and DS2 gifted me a couple of hours Me Time last night so I could wash my hair and have a read.
Bliss.

TheBigMacDougal · 10/09/2021 09:51

Morning walk with Mac pup:

Train= success
Recall from sniffing mole mound= success
Ignoring dogs at a distance= Success
Calling him before he bombed off to say hello to another puppy about 20m away= FAIL 🤦🏼‍♀️

Other pup was on lead and I wasn’t quick enough recalling him before he spotted her. Thank god owner was ok and I know the success parameters better now 😳

At least he’s crashed out now while I pretend to work…

567and · 10/09/2021 11:21

@MightyMeerkat @GuyFawkesDay We have the 'I've been playing outside for ages but must come inside to pee on the floor, then go back out again' issue too. I've tried a different cleaner today so am hoping it's eliminated any smells that may be encouraging him to pee inside. Been using the Zoflora Pet cleaner before now. It's frustrating as he is brilliant after he's woken up or had a nap and know to go outside for a wee, but then he'll just randomly come in and pee on the floor. He's (mainly) a Spaniel too, so may be it is a Spaniel thing!

Sleep at night seems to be going ok. He sits at the door of the crate when he's ready to come out and we've lengthened it to around 6:15-30 which is about the time I get up to get the kids up for school anyway. Then he naps when they've gone so I can shower, but after that the day is still quite unstructured. Must work on that!

Does anyone get their worming treatment from the vets? We've had Advocate from them for the last two treatments and before that we used what the breeder gave us, but that doesn't cover lungworms. Is it worth paying for the advocate from the vet or is there another one anyone can recommend? Lungworm worries me as we get quite a few slugs in the garden.

Wolfcub · 10/09/2021 13:39

567 I get simparica trio from the vet which is fleas ticks and worms

Aria20 · 10/09/2021 16:06

@567and I have a monthly vet plan £14 a month includes all flea, worm, tick treatments plus 10% off most things and a free 6 monthly check/consult

MrsHerculePoirot · 10/09/2021 16:51

We have a pet plan that includes annual vaccinations, advocate monthly, nail trimming and 6 monthly checks and various other bits and pieces.

Aria20 · 10/09/2021 17:08

Oh yes the annual jabs are included too, forgot those! I think most vets offer similar

LondonPupMum · 10/09/2021 17:45

Wow it's been like 4 months since I posted on this thread! Thought I'd come by to see what's new and don't recognise any usernames Grin

Londonpup is 9 months old now and life is much easier than I ever thought it would be (excluding his multiple health issues!). Am here to tell you it gets much better and to hang in there Smile. Can't imagine life without him now.

cheeseisthebest · 10/09/2021 18:19

I've got a monthly plan too for 14 pounds includes flea, worming, nails clipped and all jabs. They give him a health check too and next month I also get to meet with the nurse to talk about any behaviour issues.

Today and yesterday have felt endless, the mouthiness and jumping increasing is pants. I really do hope it’s getting worse before it gets better.

Just feels like endless entertaining, watching, removing things 😩
