Day 5 post-surgery today and someone is bored... he keeps going on sit-down strike in the garden because he doesn't want to come indoors again, bless him.

I had a good look at the wound earlier and I think it's healing ok - it's a bit pink around the top end, but there's no heat to it, it isn't bothering him as he's no interest in getting at it, no seepage of any kind, no redness around the wound. He keeps jumping up, despite our best efforts, and he does have little frantic spins around the kitchen. He is generally staying as calm as you can expect a young puppy to, I think. But it's hard on him.

Hey ho. 9 more days, I hope.

Skade · 21/08/2021 14:29

Hey all, can I join you? We have just added to our pack and now have a 9 week old french bulldog who has joined my 3 year old frenchie and 14 year old mastiff/staffy cross! Skadepup has joined us as we lost our other beloved 4 year old frenchie in May this year and our 3 year old dog has been lost without him Sad

But it has been a pretty horrendous experience so far, although the three of them have all fallen instantly in love and sleep together like a pile of puppies. Skadepup came from the same breeder as my last two and they came home in excellent condition. The same can't be said for him sadly. He has been riddled with worms to the point he vomited a load onto my arm in the middle of the night the other day and he has a runny nose that the vet can't get rid of or diagnose, despite a week of antibiotics. He's tiny (2.5kg) so it's really hard to examine him. His sternum and ribs seem slightly deformed too although this doesn't seem to bother him and the vet is not too worried about it.

The vet asked if I would give him back to the breeder but there's just no way now, I'm completely besotted. Despite his health, he's a funny little thing, eating and drinking fine, zoomies throughout the day and finally letting me sleep the whole night through last night!

I just want to get the worms and runny nose fully sorted and watch him properly thrive now! I'm hoping the latest wormer has fully cracked it, they're hideous things...

Is lovely to read how everyone else is getting along with their pups and know that I'm not alone Smile photo of skadepup attached so you can see why I can't get rid of him!

We're on 3 meals a day here now. We were on 4 for longer than most people I think, but have gone down to 3 this week. We're doing some raw meals and some still kibble. It tends to be breakfast and dinner are raw (raaw brand, because they sell that in the supermarket I shop in so it's convenient), and lunch is kibble (chudleys puppy/junior) so I can combine lunch with some training. I'm on the lookout for some freeze dried raw puppy food as I think he does better on that than the kibble, but the fully raw doesn't lend itself to being used as treats.

He was a pain at puppy class this morning, whining and crying a lot and I didn't really know what was wrong. I thought he was a bit out of sorts because I'd abandoned him on Thursday and Friday (leaving him in the capable hands of DH and 2 dds). Turns out he wasn't feeling very well, and he threw up all over the carpet as soon as we got home. He seems ok now though, and was keen enough to eat his own vomit, so I don't think he's properly ill. He may well have eaten something he wasn't supposed to eat somewhere.

juneybean · 21/08/2021 16:00

Oh man! skadepup is adorable! Such a shame he's had an awful time of it recently!

We've got Dougie booked in for puppy socialisation on Tuesday night, bit worried as he just jumps all over out 5 year old dog so hoping he's more polite to the other puppies!

MsAwesomeDragon · 21/08/2021 16:51

@Skade he is gorgeous. I love the huge ears!!! Sorry he's having such a tough time with the worms etc.

We discovered today that pup can't start doggy day care yet as he hasn't had a kennel cough vaccine. I was planning on putting him into daycare for the first day of term, but can't do that now. He's going for the kennel cough vaccine on Tuesday now and can start 2 weeks later, so will only have one boring week at home with dd1 all day every day, being left alone for a couple of hours a day. He was all set to go for his induction on Monday. I just assumed he'd had all the vaccines he needed, but apparently the kennel cough one isn't standard so we needed to ask for it separately 🙄. Such a pita, but at least I've got dd1 at home and able to have him.

PenOrPencil · 21/08/2021 17:25

Hello all, this is Pencilpup, she is now 3.5 months old. I haven’t been posting much but have been lurking, she is surely keeping me busy!
Pencilpup is sleeping in the kitchen on her own every night now. The crate didn’t work for us as she needs to move around to a new cool spot every so often.
Toileting has improved massively over the last week or so, next thing to tackle is lead walking and recall. She pulls like a horse but can’t go off lead as she has no recall… Thankfully we have found a secure enclosed field where she can run around like a crazy pup.

@Nordstrom

We are on kibble (Arden Grange) 3 times a day.

I've just taken delivery of our first Butternut box with a view to doing half and half. I know it's recommended to introduce gradually...but is it best generally to serve the cooked food as a separate meal or mixed in with the kibble do you think?

Elmpup wolfed down the Butternut meals from day one, with the exception of swish fish, which she'd wouldn't touch. No ill effects on her belly.
calmplease · 21/08/2021 17:36

@juneybean

Dougie slept to 5.20am today, I feel like a new woman Grin it won't last, as someone else said definitely one step forward two steps back!

I bought one of the tough lickimats and he absolutely loves it, although only keeps him occupied for 10 minutes it's the best 10 minutes haha.

He's nearly 15 weeks and know we should be doing some separation but how!? He screams when he can't see me.

I have the same problem with my 13 week old pup when I leave! Any tips?! :( it is getting me down.
GuyFawkesDay · 21/08/2021 18:32

I've done a lot of flitting and tbh I've just had to get on with life like going to supermarket etc. He's not left alone as there's someone in and although he wasn't happy at first he is easily distracted and settled ok with DH and the kids.

Today he sat by the door to wait for me but then took one of my slippers to his bed and had a nap with it. No fuss though. So I think he's grasping that I go away but I come back too. I mean he still whines if I'm upstairs and he's not but it's not the mad howling it was. It's getting better. Lots and lots of "mum leaves, mum comes back"

cheeseisthebest · 21/08/2021 18:49

Mine is fine with other family but its tye being totally alone I want him to be ok with. Just for a few minutes!

lifelongfrugaleer · 21/08/2021 19:00

Hmmm need to see about kennel cough as we need kennels in October

GuyFawkesDay · 21/08/2021 19:11

We have not tried alone yet. Argh!

Going to do the whole start at 5 seconds thing and see how it goes. I'll go outside with the kids then we wait outside and go straight back in etc.

sparkypupp · 21/08/2021 19:21

Whoever it was that recommended a donut bed for the crate - it worked! Felt amazing this morning after a proper sleep and she's also choosing to nap in it. I did order a snuggle pup which arrived today, but going to see if last night was a fluke or if the bed is the magic key to crate sleeping!

cheeseisthebest · 21/08/2021 19:24

Sorry gone back through last thread and can't find who you were all buying your chews from. Who was it again?

Phillpot12 · 21/08/2021 19:26

We have used dragonfly for chews but JR pet products are meant to be good too.

Wolfcub · 21/08/2021 19:27

Dragonfly here too

tizwozliz · 21/08/2021 19:51

Successful first trip to the beach. The waves were a bit scary for her so she only had a paddle until the first one 'chased' her then that was enough. Met a chocolate lab the same age and they had a nice play. Off lead and she came back when called so that was a success. Hopefully she'll sleep well in the tent tonight.

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 21/08/2021 20:01

I've just ordered from JR. Hairy rabbit ears are disgusting to think of...
Pup is letting me shut the crate door but not for long. Working on separation anxiety but as he is a chewer I would rather he was safe in the crate when I leave him.

Doggie daycare will be the future for work days when I haven't got DH or DD available but still need to be able to leave him for short duration and would love to move back to the bedroom and leave him in the sitting roon

GuyFawkesDay · 21/08/2021 20:07

God yes, FawkesPup sleeps ok in our room but I am looking forward to getting it back on e I can transition him downstairs.

Progress today, I went upstairs and he knew I had and hardly any noise. I think he's feeling more secure that I will come back. Have been getting kids and DH to feed him too and do training with him so I'm not the only person he looks to for food.

Aria20 · 21/08/2021 20:17

@tizwozliz gorgeous photo.

Pup has slept on and off most of the day after a 15 min off lead play with a collie the same age as her, she outran him surprisingly and he couldn't catch her haha!

It's been a funny day here as we go on holiday Monday so DH decided to put grass seed down today so the rain would settle it in and it'd have the week to grow before we get back... it's all over the garden to cover the holes madam has dug but means can't let her out there so have to keep taking her to the grass bit over the road which has been fun in the rain Hmm I knew she needed a poo but she just couldn't find a spot she liked - 3rd time I took her over there and she was obviously desperate as barking at me and looking at the back door, she finally went lol. Going to be fun going out at 10 for the bedtime wee and in the morning.

LadyCatStark · 21/08/2021 21:37

@tizwozlizglad you had a lovely day at the beach!

So I gave Billy his worming tablet this evening and then he was sick after his tea 🙈. Do I give him another tablet (not today I’ll need to go and buy one) or wait til next month?

Nix32 · 21/08/2021 22:34

@LadyCatStark Hmm, that's a tricky one! How long ago had the tablet been taken? I'd check with the vet but would expect to give another tablet.

@GuyFawkesDay If pup likes cardboard boxes, try an old plastic plant pot - hours of fun!

Nixpup has had a nice couple of days - a play date yesterday with a friends puppy that went really well; was lovely to see him playing rather than being told off by the family dogs who just find him irritating.

cheeseisthebest · 21/08/2021 22:44

I feel a bit sad. Cheesepup used to have his evening nap cuddled up with me and now he prefers the floor!
Tricky about the tablet. Do vets have out of hours you can call?
