Yep, people are arseholes. My cousin has 4 working gundogs, used on shoots, highly trained and they still have dickhead days! The woman walking the in season bitch should absolutely have had her on a lead and shouldn't have been out at prime time either.

Having mentioned earlier that the biting was less, the landshark has returned tonight 🙈. However he loved the puzzle toy bit it is a lift off one so needs close supervision. I'm going to get a one of the slide ones mentioned upthread. Wilko do one for a fiver too!

GuyFawkesDay · 01/09/2021 20:03

FawkesPup had his second jab at 11 weeks too and just had last one this week but we are officially out and about & it's helping him no end.

Wolfcub · 01/09/2021 20:04

@LadyCatStark the in season dog owner sounds really irresponsible and a cow. I also met a cow of a dog owner today who thought she was funny making comments about me/pup. I wish I had been a bit faster off the mark to have a sharp word but I was a bit too taken aback to do so.

LadyCatStark · 01/09/2021 20:07

@Aria20 yeah, when Billy had gooey eyes (from falling on the canal 🙈) I just popped our used tea bag in another cup and used them once they’d cooled down 😂 I just did it every time we had a brew for a couple of days. Our neighbour also said that Optrex eye drops have the same ingredients as the ones from the vet that she paid £75 for 😵 but I only have her word for that.

@Turquoisesol thanks, that might help. If only he still looked like a little puppy!

Spudlet · 01/09/2021 20:09

Hah, if you meet the woman with the in-season bitch off the lead again, If be half-tempted to tell her you’ll charge her a stud fee if they end up tied (which I wouldn’t think they would at his age, but if her botch is off the lead then that’s the risk she’s taking, IMO…) 😈

Returnoftheowl · 01/09/2021 20:19

@567and our puppy had his jabs around that time and no issues.

LadyCatStark · 01/09/2021 20:19

@Spudlet 😂 he would make very beautiful babies! He hasn’t shown any signs of being able to do that though yet but it’s not a chance I wanted to take. It is madness walking an in heat bitch off lead in a popular dog walking spot at peak time though 🙈. It’s the entitled way she said it too, “We’ve got an in heat dog here so……” I should have replied with “so don’t walk her near other dogs then!”

tizwozliz · 01/09/2021 20:24

Thanks everyone for being kind (and making me cry again!). It’s a shame we can’t all meet up and be friendly and let our dogs play together!

Totally, I'm trying to find some friendly dogs to go walking with in the hope that I can teach a "yes it's ok to play type command". Not much chance of that if she's never allowed to play with anyone. I joined a private Facebook local group today which supposedly arranged social walks etc. but once I was accepted found that it just appears to be posts about lost dogs and dog walker advertisements - pah!

LadyCatStark · 01/09/2021 20:24

@567and we were really lucky and Billy was able to have his at 10 weeks as he had lepto2 not 4 as the other 2 variations are not common in our area. That meant he could got for walks from 11 weeks which was a life saver!

LadyCatStark · 01/09/2021 20:27

@tizwozliz that’s such a shame. We’re lucky that we have a couple of neighbours that have good sized, similar aged dogs that he can play with, a springer, cocker, 2 labradoodles and a cockerpoo.

MorningInspiration · 01/09/2021 20:27

It sounds like you’ve done fantastic work with your pup @ladycatstark . I frankly would be impressed

It’s so easy for people to judge others based on 30 seconds of interaction. I know it’s easy to say but don’t let one twit ruin all your hard work.

Wolfcub · 01/09/2021 20:29

We were 11 weeks for second jabs too, also lepto2 as our breeder doesn't use lepto4 and luckily my vet had a stock and could continue the course

Aria20 · 01/09/2021 20:29

Thanks going to try the tea on the eye, it's just one eye so far. Will have a proper look in the morning see if I can see anything in the eye!

Thanks @MorningInspiration I’m trying really really hard which is what makes it so upsetting.

LadyCatStark · 01/09/2021 20:30

@Aria20 good luck, did your SIL take her in any water?

Aria20 · 01/09/2021 20:38

@LadyCatStark I don't think so but will ask. Think they mainly did fields but could be grass seed or pollen I guess

Meant to mention we use Arden Grange Liver Pate for recall when out and about, it's in a tube like primula and it means she actually will come back and sit as she licks the end of the tube. Previously although she was coming back to us when recalling, she wasn't actually stopping it was more of a fly by check in and at least 50% of the time she didn't actually take the treat we were offering before deciding she'd be off again.

Pup was a bitey horror at 8 so she's already asleep in her crate. She normally naps on the sofa for a couple of hours from 9 before her crate at 11 so not sure what's going to happen now. I want a good night's sleep as visiting my parents tomorrow which will involve a lot of pup wrangling and not much relaxation, they have 3 ponds - uh oh!

Turquoisesol · 01/09/2021 20:45

Aw ladycatstark I feel just the same. I spend so much time researching training and trying to work out how to resolve any issues. And it’s so frustrating when you have a bad day and feel like people are judging you for not having a perfectly behaved dog! It’s frustrating when you have a bigger dog too as they are judged more harshly. I think if your dog is small, cute and wagging tail constantly, it is not judged in the same way.

cheeseisthebest · 01/09/2021 20:50

My pup had his second jabs at ten weeks old.
Ladycatstark I'm sorry that woman was so horrible. Ignore her!
Our puppy has discovered grated cheese today he loves it. Think they all do don't they?

GuyFawkesDay · 01/09/2021 21:04

Liver pate sounds a great move. One for the shopping list! I've got some pets at home chicken paste in a tube I might try that

tizwozliz · 01/09/2021 21:18

This is the one we have - we were introduced to it at the vets

MrsHerculePoirot · 01/09/2021 21:24

All the “should they be on lead, should they be off lead, will the dogs come to say hello or won’t they, how will each dog react, try not to let her jump on other dog Walker etc etc” gets tiring after a while !

Oh my goodness this x 1000. PoirotPup will come back, but not always immediately so unless it’s really quiet we tend to use the longline. Hadn’t thought of taking out that pate in the tube - we have some here but deffo will try that next time. I agree that with labs they look big at this age and I always say ‘sorry he’s only a puppy and we’re still trying to train him’ when asking if he can meet/greet other dogs!

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 01/09/2021 21:25

I have a reactive dog. She ignores other dogs completely - actively swerving out of their way but if one comes close and bothers her she will snarl. I feel hugely embarrassed but also frustrated because she is terrified. I've done counter conditioning....she loved playing with other dogs as a pup (was probably a pain in the arse to other owners) but at 2 yrs she suddenly became fearful which manifests as aggression.

I'll admit to frustration if I have my girl on the lead and other big dogs come at her but puppies are fine because I appreciate that they are still learning. When I explain my dogs reactive, most owners say it's fine for her to growl at their dogs and warn them off but I'm always worried the other dog will also react as my girl is a small terrier and will come off worse.

I've no idea how I'm going to manage two dogs, one reactive and the other desperate to play. I'm a bit worried the reactive one will start approaching other dogs but still be nervous and unreliable. Then pup will learn negative things.

@LadyCatStark I suspect you're overwhelmed by work and the walk. I've been working at home for 2/3 weeks now and we now have a routine and know what to expect so can plan for it. First week was a bit desperate with me thinking I might have to resign

Turquoisesol · 01/09/2021 21:36

Makemethecleanhouse it must be so annoying if you have a nervous dog and other dogs bound over and approach them. I was in the park the other day and I sat out puppy underneath the picnic bench so she could watch the world from there and hopefully not have any other dogs come over and pester us. So she was on lead under picnic bench. And we still had a dog come over and go under the bench to say hello!

poppy2021 · 01/09/2021 21:52

@tizwozliz

Ada would love to be friends with *@poppy2021* 's pup I think. I'm still scouting around for local puppy friends. I drove past one of our regular walking spots and there was a young lab and I keep hoping I'll meet them out one day.
That would be lovely. Whizzpup just loves everyone especially puppies. Focus goes out of her head when she sees another dog so we are doing a lot of "look at me" training. Hard work but worth it 🐾💕🐾
