Today, after a full 24 hrs of panting and pacing and low temp. Our amazing dog went into labor. Now I know alot here do not agree with breeding, however our breeder we have been involved with for over 17 years. this is our third dog out of her . She is an incredible pedigree, so we are what they call a guardian home. I had to allow one breed then the full price of a pup or a pup would be mine. She had the best care including an ultrasound and xray. We knew ahead of time it would be 7 pups. My wonderful breeder drove the 30 min to us today as soon as i called (it was 530 am) by 8 am we have all these amazing pups. and our girl is really being a good mum. So. the picture that would be demanded lol.

Oh bless her, she looks a bit startled to have that lot! Grin
Love her Maternity Fur feet trims!
Is she full poodle?

Absolutely repulsive.

Not the dog, she’s gorgeous, as are the puppies.
The behaviour of the ‘breeder’ I mean.
It seems to be getting more common too 😡

momager1 · 16/08/2021 17:44

yes she is a full standard poodle as was the dad. right now she is nursing 2 of the larger pups while the others are sound asleep already having a greedy fill up.she had gone from being stunned...to NOPE THESE ARE MINE with our other standard poodle. However she has no issue with me sitting in the whelping pen to help the babes latch. she licked my face when i was bending down putting the runt on a nipple. Had to channel my inner child about germs and dirt as I SAW what she ate just an hour before. BOAK

Poodles are great and have been mixed far too much with other breeds imo, when as a stand alone breed they are fab (and come in a range of sizes Grin ). MIL has always had poodles and they have all been cracking little characters, full of fun and mischief but very even-tempered and very trainable.

I don’t agree with the breeder tactics but that’s not a criticism of you - I am sure you have taken it very seriously and treated your beautiful girl in the right way.

Normally I would agree. But I have worked with this breeder for almost 18 years now for our family dogs. She only places the ones she wants to breed with a KNOWN home. She breeds her dams only ONCE. She also pays for their spay . She loves her dogs so very much and she is a true testament to the ethical breeders that only want to keep the best aspects of the breed going.I have seen alot of shitty breeders out there. She is not one of them so i will defend her. She also takes all her dogs back no matter HOW old , no buyer is allowed to sell her dogs. Right now...she has a 12 yr old that they gave up because she was starting to get a bit of an issue with peeing in the house . Instead of them dealing with it. THEY threw her away. My breeder took her back and gave them all the cash they spent on her 12 years ago! My breeder says...welll.... if i did not offer that...they would just sell off behind my back. So guess what .that 12 yr old will live out her life in luxury as they are spoiled out at my breeders home!!

PollyRoulson · 16/08/2021 19:10

How does it work now? Do you rear the puppies at your home?

Powertothepetal · 16/08/2021 19:11

Yeah, I still think it’s disgusting I'm afraid.

Presumably she was sold to you as a pup?

So the decision to breed her was presumably made before a satisfactory hip score had been done, before doing the DNA tests advised unless she was clear by parentage, before seeing how her temperament turned out...

Quite aside from the fact that breeding can sometimes change a bitch’s temperament and there is no guarantee of a trouble free birth, your bitch could have died, lost her pups, needed a caesarean, rejected her pups, but the breeder was quite happy to have any of those possible scenarios happen to you and to your much loved family pet.

No, I can’t agree with you.

And frankly, taking a dog back is nothing fantastic.
I’d expect a breeder to take back a dog they’d bred.
And an ultrasound is standard.
I don’t see anything in anything you’ve written that changes my opinion here.

But alas, it’s done now so nothing more to be said really.

actually you are very wrong. She was sold to me at 7 months old , as a potential Dam. In the contract there was also a clause that she would pay (and she did) for a full hip and knee check and DNA before she would be bred. If these were not acceptable....then she walked away from me for her... and she would refund me some of the money..a price accepted by both of us. She had reclaimed her from someone that she saw was advertising her for breeding . against her conditions..and WAY TOO young. She paid her back the 3000 canadian dollars that she had paid. I paid the 3000 dollars. I get the 3000 back or a pup. she drove to me this morning and delivered the pups. She has paid for ALL of our girls extra puppy food (which a preggo mum needs) she paid for the ultrasound to make sure she was safe...that we knew how many pups to expect (as otherwise...a retained pup kills the dam) Sorry. not all breeders are idiots (but i will say 80 pc are ) This one is NOT. So... to clarify. I have had my gorgeous girl for just over a year. I paid for her. She is totally vetted for everything. She is registered. I could not have her unless i took a breed contract for ONE litter. At the end of the day, myself, who her breeder has known and worked with for almost 2 decades,, will have a free companion for life. I will not allow a second breed and she WILL be fixed. My breeder is an ethical breeder and does not believe in mixing breeds or selling to the first person with a fistful of cash

So you’re in Canada, not the UK? I think the crazy unregulated breeding we see over here in the Uk is possibly not as bad there.
Anyway, your Girl is beautiful, it sounds a responsible set up and I hope all her gorgeous puppies stay well and grow up as elegant as their Mum Flowers

XelaM · 16/08/2021 20:10

She’s majestic! Poodles are so beautiful and I love that yours actually has a poodle cut rather than just clipped curls like is in fashion now. I love poodle cuts and our miniature poodle looked like a prince when he appeared from the groomers Grin

yes i am in canada. I married a canadian, but born and bred in belfast NI. There is crazy unregulated breeding here also. Some of us owners do research and realize that side of the road meetings to get your pup... no health checks etc.. AVOID

When I first heard about this method of breeding I was horrified. However I recently had a conversation with a breeder I personally know loves their dogs so much that gave me another view on it. It stops bitches from being used to breed over and over again and it doesn't narrow down the gene pool quite as much.

She's beautiful and looks very proud. OP if you know and trust your breeder I don't think you should be concerned about this practise anymore a traditional breeding style. There will always be good and bad breeders unfortunately and it is up to potential dog owners to do their due diligence and make sure they're happy.

@PollyRoulson

I have the choice. I choose to keep my girl at home so i do have to have the pups here until they are 8 weeks old. Then my girl goes to the breeders for a week to make sure that they are weaned properly. After that.. I get my grace home, and she does not allow pick ups until 12 weeks, by then they are well on their way to house trained and also socialized. The breeder is paying for all of my girls vet fees. ..and also any puppy vet visits whilst they are still in my care.

Thankyou. yes. I do know and trust my breeder.. and yes it is totally to stop the dams from being overused. A good breeder will do one to two breeds max with her dams...that is the reason for guardian homes, so if i go out and try to breed her again or to a labrador or whatever,, I have now lost my right to my dam (or bitch lol,,, whatever we want to call her) This is For HER protection, not mine ... maybe a bit for the breeder as she does not want her lines adulterated.

for those that still think that my breeder or this method is horrible. All seven of her pups survived. The last one would not have if it was not for the fact that my breeder came here to help with delivery ( 5 am this morning,, we knew she was going into labor last night) I laid on the couch all night whilst she paced and tried to nest. I called the breeder as soon as the shakes began. Breeder was here a few days ago setting up a professional whelping pen, complete with heating pads and heat lamps. We were ready to go. Last pup (a gorgeous little black and white tux poodle) was popped out very fast after the sixth pup. the sac was so very thick and worse the cord inside was around this little ones neck. She was not breathing...after asperation she was still not breathing so our breeder was rubbing her hard with fresh towels...then she put her whole little head in her mouth and sucked hard...spit out gross stuff...and just looked up at me and said sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do... now...please... i need some water YUK.. lol Does this sound like an bad breeder??? not to me. she has called me hourly since she left incase there is an issue i need help with. Sorry i will not let anyone lump her in with backyard/car boot breeders

It sounds like your breeder is responsible BUT I still think that the whole set up is awful.
How much money do you think your breeder will make from this? I would happily de gunk a puppy like that for several thousand pounds

Warmduscher · 16/08/2021 21:36

Why do you keep using capitals in your posts? Do you think it will convince people that you’re not part of the puppy trade if you shout loud enough?

icedcoffees · 17/08/2021 06:06

Would you still think this was a wonderful idea if your beloved pet dog had died during labour?

Hm2020 · 17/08/2021 07:14

Beautiful would love to see more pics

PollyRoulson · 17/08/2021 08:45

I am little concerned that the puppies will be in the home of an inexperienced breeder for 8 weeks. There is a lot that needs to be done in this period, health and behaviourwise and not all bitches are happy to feed until 8 weeks.

I do have concerns about this method of breeding but if you are happy with the situation then I guess it works for you

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 17/08/2021 08:55

Everyone has to start somewhere, and OP has a highly experienced breeder on the end of a phone.

TBH I'm not the biggest fan of this method of breeding, but if it means that more dams have fewer litters, it's good for the gene pool.

HerMammy · 17/08/2021 09:04

You’ve had her a year from she was 7mths, so she’s been bred well under 2 yrs old? not such a great breeder. £3000 for a 7mth old, the litter is potentially worth £20k+, but it’s all for the love of the dogs 🙄

That's a really good point.

She's far too young Sad
