Checking in. Thanks for the new thread MrsHP.

My standards are already low on the housework front, so having AwesomePup has made very little difference to the cleanliness of the house Blush. There is definitely a difference in the garden though, which is remarkable as it's mostly paved so I didn't think there would be much damage possible.

Spudlet · 03/08/2021 07:14

Morning all, how are those early starts treating you?

I have just given myself a fright by trying to calculate Spudpup’s projected adult weight. The first site I used told me he was going to weigh 49kg as an adult and be the size of a Great Dane ConfusedShock I mean, he’s a big chap but he’s not that big - I hope!

Fortunately I then found a second site which asked for more information about his breed and sex, and that told me he will be around 32kg - which is still a big lad, but slightly more reasonable. I mean - 49kg! Argh!

Now need to dig out the dog food bag to see how much I should actually be feeding him, I haven’t actually increased his portions from the amount the breeder said, but he is growing like a weed so I’m guessing he may need a little more soon.

MargosKaftan · 03/08/2021 07:28

Morning- signing in, first night with new puppy done. I've had no sleep.

She was not having it that I should sit with a coffee at 6:30am for a bit. She had decreed it playtime and I needed to sort it.

3 poos so far, all on the puppy pad, and after innital accidents, all wees have been on the pad/litter tray. I will be back for advice once she's jabbed and I have to move this outdoors.

littlebilliie · 03/08/2021 07:51

Pup day one Thursday so placemarking 😁

PenOrPencil · 03/08/2021 07:57

Good morning! I now know why we need a puppy survival thread. Pencilpup has been with us for just over 3 weeks. She was chipped yesterday and went for her first walk, then would absolutely not settle at night on her own.
She was still tearing everything apart in the kitchen, where she sleeps, at 2am so I slept in the living room with her. Once I was there she was out in minutes.
We might have to rethink crate training, but she likes to get up and wander around to find a cooler spot during the night.

Wolfcub · 03/08/2021 08:23

Thanks MrsHP. I think wolfpup might be going to the V.E.T today. He is wheezing when exerting himself and I think he may have something stuck in his throat or nose

GuyFawkesDay · 03/08/2021 08:30

Puppy pick up day here.
Am bricking it!!!
Our crate is big so hoping pup can find cooler spots as well as snuggly ones and crate is inside puppy pen so he can potter about if needed.
Oh god, I'm going to go back to school in September bleary-eyed aren't ?!???

tizwozliz · 03/08/2021 08:35

@Spudlet - do you know how much is parents weighed? Ada is projected to be 25.1kg - her mum is 26kg so that seems pretty accurate. We've not increased food allowance either, it's still quite a bit less than what the food packet says but she's growing fine and still can't be tempted much by food when there are distractions about so she can't be starving.

Spudlet · 03/08/2021 08:39

I don’t know, although I could find out how much mum weighs, I think. 32 sounds about right though for a Labrador of the size I reckon he’ll be - mum and big sister are both quite tall and leggy, and although I only saw a picture of dad, he looked like a fairly muscular, fit dog. So I reckon Spudpup will be about the same. Looking forward to seeing how big he’ll be!

I might pop him to the vets to use their scales next week, see how he’s doing.

He had a carrot for the first time last night. It was hilarious. He spent a good five minutes leaping round and round it and chucking it around the kitchen before he finally decided to eat it Grin

Can I join this thread please?! Onto week three of crazy collie pup 🐶- she is completely and utterly gorgeous but my goodness I’m bloody knackered 🤣 we got her the day before the holidays started (teacher here) so i feel like I’ve not sat down for about 3 months 🤣 she’s going for a play date at a local doggy daycare place for a few hours today, it will feel like I’m missing my own shadow!

GuyFawkesDay · 03/08/2021 08:58

I'm a teacher too, I thought holidays might be sensible timing but I'm not so sure! Argh!!!!

I have a feeling FawkesPup is going to be a furry menace 😂😂😂

Yay!!! I'm so excited for you!!! Yes, you are probably going back to school bleary eyed, but it's so worth it. Remember that puppy blues are a real thing, and you may well feel overwhelmed until he (and you) settle into the new routine. Have fun with your little squishy puppy 🐕🐶🐾

I believe the admission price to this thread is a puppy picWink

I think I need to investigate doggy day care too.

Whattodo121 · 03/08/2021 09:15

Here she is the little darling Smile she is currently tormenting the chickens and eating stuff she shouldn’t in the garden 🤣

I’ve been researching and viewing lots of daycare places. I think what we’re going to do is send her to the same place every Tuesday and Thursday regardless of holidays and DH’s work pattern, so that she gets some good exercise with other dogs. The place we’re trialling today does agility etc which for a collie is what they need. Then DH works shifts so we don’t need weekly care for all the other days as he’s usually off one or two days per week - there’s an excellent place on the road behind ours and she’ll go there on an adhoc basis (she went for a trial yesterday) and then we’ve got another taster session at another place next week and a dog Walker lady coming to meet her tomorrow 😅 I’ve approached this like a military operation and have bought a new calendar for the kitchen, as we’re going to have to have my working days, DH’s shifts, DS breakfast and after school care and Dog daycare in a centralised place otherwise it will all fall apart!

MrsHerculePoirot · 03/08/2021 09:26

Welcome everyone with recent pups or collecting soon! Teacher also here and we got ours at Easter - I was very glad to return to work whilst DH wfh 🤣

@Wolfcub hope wolfpup is ok.

Hi there, just joining today. We've had our 10 week old jackapoo for just over a week now. She's gorgeous and settling in well but I'm struggling with the early mornings and particularly the later evening crazy hour (s)!

Lovely to read other people's ups and downs!

Puppypawstime1 · 03/08/2021 09:31

Also a teacher and can't imagine how I'll cope in September! Don't know how I'll get myself ready as at the moment my mornings are centred around her! I've really been feeling the puppy blues - I didn't know it was a thing. It's really knocked me for six. Hoping this group will help.

Whattodo121 · 03/08/2021 09:36

Hi @Puppypawstime1 us teachers all thought this was a good idea to spend our holidays with essentially a really bitey toddler who can run faster than we can 🤣 my way of dealing with the chaos is to overplan (see my post above 🙄🤣) but I’m tired of being ‘on duty’ all the time, particularly as DS is 9 now so finally much more independent, and he’d finally started sleeping till 9am on weekends… however we’ve invested in a playpen, which is a godsend, and she sleeps in a crate and is actually doing pretty well overnight so need to count my blessings. I think puppy blues is definitely a thing, it really is such hard work!

Puppypawstime1 · 03/08/2021 09:46

Thank you @Whattodo121, appreciate you replying. I might look into some doggy daycare. I figured she's too young at the moment. We're going to start taking her out on the car each day to get her used to driving and next week we can start taking her on walks, so maybe day care will be an option! Thank you.

MrsHerculePoirot · 03/08/2021 09:56

@Puppypawstime1 hang in there. The puppy blues are totally a thing. I think I cried every day for two weeks and then a few times a week after that for a few more weeks. It did get easier once we could go out for walks even if they are short at first!

PoirotPup is now nearly 6 months and yes he has moments of craziness and we have to think about who is with him and can’t just go all go out for the day but the crazed bitey shark days are long gone. We know a bit more what to expect on a normal day in terms of sleeping and awake/needing attention time. It definitely gets easier and sleep returns.

@Spudlet one thing we definitely don’t have a problem with is early starts; Billy doesn’t get up til 9:45 now it’s the holidays 😵

I can’t remember who asked as it’s on the previous thread, but he is crate trained but only for sleeping. He’s more than happy for us to go out for a few hours while he has a nap and I’m making sure we keep this up over the holidays so we don’t have to start over in September when I (hopefully) will be going out to work for a few hours a day rather than WFH. He’d love doggy daycare but we live in the middle of nowhere and there’s only one which is a fortune!

tizwozliz · 03/08/2021 10:19

Dentist this morning so Ada got put in her crate at 9 with a Kong with the other half upstairs but working. Normally she'd nap about that time so this was a little experiment. I'd hope she might nap once she'd finished the Kong but instead she howled.

Luckily I still have 2 months off work to crack all this stuff!

Thank you @MrsHerculePoirot, you have made me feel a lot better! Thanks everyone.

Nordstrom · 03/08/2021 11:16

Just checking into the new thread. Nordpup has been a total pain in the arse this morning. She was very cross because I put her into the garden so I could finally mop the kitchen floor (which still looks dirtier than it ever did before she arrived Grin).
