Bordoodle

I've just completed a questionnaire that recommends that a Bordoodle is the best dog for me. This is a cross between a border collie and a poodle. As they are quite rare I would love to know of anyone who has one and who knows of a reputable breeder.

A what now?

A reputable breeder is going to be a struggle.

Poodle x border collie is not going to be an easy dog....! Do you have experience with dog? Have a lot of time and energy for training and walks? This will be one high needs dog!

What questionaire was it? I’d be a bit wary of anything that suggests a cross as they don’t have established breed traits, so there’s no way to tell what a dog will be like, so how can they “match” a dog with an unknown personality to you?

IpreferInchyraBlue · 19/03/2021 15:24

Good grief. If such a think exists (and it wouldn't have a breeder, because that isn't a breed), do you have all day to play with, train and exercise it?

Notavegan · 19/03/2021 15:26

There is probably a reason not many exist Grin

Spaceman1 · 19/03/2021 15:28

Here is the description of their character traits:

Highlights
The Bordoodle is a mixed breed dog. They are not purebreds like their Border Collie or Poodle parents.
Bordoodles come in a range of coat colors and patterns, usually incorporating a mix of black, white, gray and brown.
Bordoodles don't shed too much. Brushing your dog one or two times a week should suffice.
These dogs are extremely smart, but that intelligence can sometimes manifest itself in destructive behavior if the dog is left alone or not properly trained.
Children and Bordoodles are a great mix. In general, you couldn't ask for a better family dog than the Bordoodle. It's still important to supervise playtime with all kids and dogs.
A couple of walks every day, totaling around 45 minutes, should do the trick to keep the dog happy and healthy. Although, due to the mixed breed's intelligence, it's of great benefit to incorporate obedience tasks into the exercise mix to keep the dog alert.

Theres one I meet in the park a fair bit. He is lovely and a beautiful dog, but must be massively time consuming in terms of walks, mental enrichment and training.

Crossing two incredibly intelligent and high energy dog breeds is probably unlikely to result in an easy family pet. Good option if you're a shepherd with allergies though Wink

PeckyOwl · 19/03/2021 15:29

Hahahahaha.

Ladsladslads · 19/03/2021 15:32

"A couple of walks every day, totaling around 45 minutes, should do the trick to keep the dog happy and healthy"

Bloody hell. My dachshund gets more walking than this! You'd need to times that by 3 at least

Spaceman1 · 19/03/2021 15:33

@Ladsladslads would you mind finding out from your friend how they find their dog and reporting back? I would love to know about their temperament in general.

OP posts:
LizziesTwin · 19/03/2021 15:35

A blend of two super intelligent breeds means the dog will probably learn to drive & steal your car. The long collie coat combined with the poodle curls will be a nightmare to groom. Why not just have one or the other?

TheDaydreamBelievers · 19/03/2021 15:37

That survey is nonsense. Do you have time to do 3 big walks a day and also train them with trick boxes and mental tasks? If not, Id say no. There are other appropriate family breeds.

Also because they are not a registered breed it'll be very difficult to find an ethical source of a puppy. They're also uncommon.

Im very HmmHmmHmm at any questionnaire that had this as a result.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2021 15:37

No idea if a wise choice but just googled - very cute

Spaceman1 · 19/03/2021 15:42

@LizziesTwin 😂

According to this well known website they are low maintenance and make great family dogs and don't need very much exercise. Also nice to have a dog that is unusual. I really need to find someone who has one and has first hand experience.

OP posts:
diggerdan · 19/03/2021 15:45

They're not unusual, they're a mongrel
They will need much more grooming and exercise than that website says

Ladsladslads · 19/03/2021 15:46

They're just someone I meet in the park from time to time I'm afraid but if I happen to bump into them I'll ask.

percheron67 · 19/03/2021 15:47

Dreadful cross I would think. Border Collies are wonderful dogs with the correct handling. However, they do not cross well as a rule. My next door neighbour's dog is a labrador cross border collie and it is the most aggressive and sly dog i have met in many a year.

WeeMadArthur · 19/03/2021 15:48

How do the people who wrote the questionnaire know enough about what the breed is like to advise anyone that they are the ideal dog when they are bound to be a very recent cross breed experiment?

Are you a first time dog owner? If so I would avoid very intelligent breeds that could run rings round you. I’d pay more attention to the bit that says
These dogs are extremely smart, but that intelligence can sometimes manifest itself in destructive behavior if the dog is left alone or not properly trained. than the bit about them being great with kids. Lots of breeds are great with kids but won’t need the same physical and mental exercise to not tear the place up when bored.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 19/03/2021 15:49

According to this well known website they are low maintenance and make great family dogs and don't need very much exercise.

Which well known website? In the nicest possible way it doesnt sound like you have much experience with dogs? Absolutely nothing wrong with that, just do as much research as possible from a wide variety of sources especially the UK dog charities like Dogs Trust (not just re adopting, they have good care guidance info IIRC).

Also, there's lots of great family dogs that dont need heaps of exercise. Hate to break it to you though, ALL dogs require a fair bit of maintenance.

Im sorry but that survey sounds silly.

Could you link it please so i can fill it in i want to see what it recommends for me just for shits and giggles.

Joking aside though, best wishes for your dog journey. I love mine to bits he's worth the hard work.

WeeMadArthur · 19/03/2021 15:50

I would never have a pure breed Collie either, I don’t want a dog that’s more intelligent than me!

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 19/03/2021 15:51

Oh another thing to note, size of dog isnt always the measure of their energy level.
Eg little Jack Russells are high energy & big Rottweilers are medium to low energy once in adulthood.

Puppywithattitude · 19/03/2021 15:51

I am sceptical about these questionnaires, I once saw one that recommended a Vizsla for a retired person with no dog ownership experience.
As a Vizsla owner I was agog Shock

Spaceman1 · 19/03/2021 15:52

@WeeMadArthur - I am a first time dog owner. I'm a bit disappointed about all this negativity really but I think I probably need to be realistic.

@Wavescrashingonthebeach

I'm not sure if I'll get into trouble for this but the questionnaire is here:

If this is genuine, could you post the link OP?

Helenluvsrob · 19/03/2021 15:57

😂😂😂

You do know that you could end up with all the downsides of both breeds.

So a dog with the intelligence of a 4yr old , boundless energy, wants to run miles a day ....... and also is wanting to be a lap dog and good going separation anxiety , and sheds !

RandomMess · 19/03/2021 15:58

OMG a poodle and border collie combined 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

Basically a dog that needs to be a working dog and walks miles and miles and lots of brain work too 😳
