Bordoodle

I've just completed a questionnaire that recommends that a Bordoodle is the best dog for me. This is a cross between a border collie and a poodle. As they are quite rare I would love to know of anyone who has one and who knows of a reputable breeder.

@Spaceman1

I would like a dog that is good with children and would be friendly towards visitors. I WFH so can keep the dog company but one that can be left alone for say 3 hours without becoming upset. Also a dog with personality/ intelligence would be a bonus. I can commit to two 30 minute walks a day during the week and long walks at the weekend. A friend on mine suggested a Havanese which of course is completely different to a Bordoodle. I'm trying to do lots of research to get the right dog so please don't have a go at me.
Two 30 minute walks a day/ happy on its own for 3 hours might suit a very elderly dog in its retirement years. The trouble with taking on a very elderly dog is that they tend to be set in their ways , and if they haven't been used to children they might be intolerant and a bit grumpy .
Ihaventgottimeforthis · 19/03/2021 16:47

That is a possibility, and so can border collies (and many other breeds to be fair). Another reason why a cross is a potential nightmare!
I have a collie cross, he's not a friendly & outgoing dog to strangers, human or canine.
Generalising massively, I find labs, retrievers & spaniels to be perhaps the friendliest outgoing breeds? Terriers no, some toy/companion breeds are friendly, apart from dachs & chis.
I quite like the idea of a quickfire quiz where someone shouts a dog breed & we have to respond instantly with a one word breed trait...

Strokethefurrywall · 19/03/2021 16:47

I wouldn't want any dog with the intelligence and disobedience of a cat! 😆

Veterinari · 19/03/2021 16:47
@fallfallfall I understood that terriers are generally quite vocal, keen on digging and unpredictable with children 🙈
What all terriers? Confused
Honestly OP you sound pretty clueless.
If you only have time for 30 mins walking twice a day you probably need to think about whether you really can meet the welfare needs of a dog. And do a lot more research

All dogs bark. If you don't want barking, get a cat!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/03/2021 16:47

Make this stop, please!

Carouselfish · 19/03/2021 16:47

That's neurotic X neurotic. Only for the experienced owner offering high stimulation I'd say.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 19/03/2021 16:48

Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 19/03/2021 16:53

Actually I quite enjoyed doing that quiz & the breed recommendations were pretty good, apart from the frankly bizarre crosses it suggested!
A Basset Retriever? WTAF?

Opalfruits2 · 19/03/2021 16:53

Agree with PP in highly strung x highly strung - if you’ve not had dogs before save yourself the hassle. Got a border collie and my brother a doodle cross whatever the fuck they are crossing them with these days, neither are easy breeds - demanding!

WhoWants2Know · 19/03/2021 16:54

Oh my word. Who would mix those breeds? Crazy intelligent + Crazy energetic

It would disassemble your house brick by brick, herd everyone else's pets into your garden and then start building weapons of mass destruction in the garage.

krustykittens · 19/03/2021 16:56

I have to say, I have had terriers all my life and I wouldn't recommend them to first time owners. People think because they are small, they are easy. I have two Manchesters at the moment and they have proved to be loyal but aloof with strangers and very high energy, with a strong prey drive. They need a lot of training and stimulating. Friends of mine have a cavalier king charles spaniel and he is such a happy, sweet little dog, wonderful with their kids and doesn't seem to need long walks. But he does shed. They can have a lot health problems, though, so I would research breeders very carefully and be prepared to wait for a good pup.

TheVanguardSix · 19/03/2021 16:57

I'd get a retired greyhound, OP.

Spaceman1 · 19/03/2021 16:57

Ok, as it's a Friday afternoon, I'm going to make suggestions and let's have a one word opinion, starting with Bichon Frise.

Yep cos with zero information, strangers on the internet can play doggy-dating for you. Confused

Sounds foolproof

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 19/03/2021 17:00

Obliging.

bluebluezoo · 19/03/2021 17:01

How about a Poodle OP, which is a cross of a Poodle with a Poodle?

You could be on to something there! Call it a poodoodle or doodlepoo, double the price, and start a new trend!

Spaceman1 · 19/03/2021 17:01

@Veterinari please lose the negativity!

OP posts:
WhoWants2Know · 19/03/2021 17:02

For a first time owner with children, I would recommend a medium-sized, fairly stupid dog.

Bichon aren't hugely clever, but I'm wary of anything too small around kids. A tiny dog's only defense is it's teeth.

TheVanguardSix · 19/03/2021 17:02

I said retired greyhound but Bichon Frise is a good one. They're lovely.
You could get away with your hour a day (2 x 30 minutes walks) with a Bichon Frise. They are great with kids. But they do need a lot of mental stimulation/attention. If you want a dog that will lay in its bed quietly in between your walks, Bichon Frise is not it.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 19/03/2021 17:03

Also Amiable.

WhoWants2Know · 19/03/2021 17:03

Retired greyhound is a good shout.

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 19/03/2021 17:03

That’s one hell of a paint brush to paint ALL terriers with, OP. There’s over 30 breeds of terrier in all kinds of shapes and personalities. It cracks me up that you also seem to think negative things about pure bred poodles and yet were interested in a poodle cross.
I really think you need to spend a LONG time researching a dog for you, especially considering Covid makes things even more difficult. May I suggest planning a trip to Discover Dogs in November where you can meet lots of different breeds and their owners.
I would also suggest that looking into a rescue would be a good idea - it’s always a good thing to do and you also know a little bit more about the dog you might be getting which might be good for you.

Spaceman1 · 19/03/2021 17:04

Havanese?

OP posts:
Puppywithattitude · 19/03/2021 17:05

Grumpy
I wasn't suggesting that retired people should settle for miniature pinchers and the like.
Clearly many people are equipped to deal with gun dogs.
S
As a generalisation ( yes I know how MN hates a generalisation) a dog such as a Vizsla would be challenging for a first time owner who might be unaware of the temperament and exercise needs of the breed.
I wasn't writing off retired people.
