Bordoodle

I've just completed a questionnaire that recommends that a Bordoodle is the best dog for me. This is a cross between a border collie and a poodle. As they are quite rare I would love to know of anyone who has one and who knows of a reputable breeder.

I really despair that a website has given such a suggestion given these mix breeds have no certain type of character given the uncertainty of what genes the dog will inherit

Why don’t you speak to breeders of poodles and breeders of collies (reputable). I think you’d get an interesting view from them. The breeder from whom we got our collie (who has years and years of experience and who has not bred during lockdown) was scathing about those who sold these mixes based on a known temperament

Personally - as the owner of a BC and knowing poodles and poodle mixes - I think it would be madness to go for such a mix. The fact you are looking for something “unusual” alarms me too - this is a dog, not a fashion accessory.

If you are a responsible person who cares about dogs you will have a major rethink. I doubt my breeder would sell to you if she had read what you’ve written here.

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 19/03/2021 16:01

knows of a reputable breeder

There isn’t one because this is a mongrel. There isn’t anything wrong with a mongrel but anyone crossing these breeds is highly unlikely to be doing it for anything other than money and not taking the health or wellbeing of the animals into consideration. And a cross breed of two highly intelligent, working background dogs could be a disaster and one that shouldn’t even be a consideration for a first time dog owner.

Spaceman1 · 19/03/2021 16:03

If it really is like that then this website is very misleading.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 19/03/2021 16:03

Low maintenance?

A high energy, incredibly intelligent herding breed, renowned for needing near constant stimulation and very high levels of off lead exercise. Crossed with another high energy, incredibly active breed which is known as being the most intelligent breed in the world.

45 minutes a day walk. What should possibly go wrong?

Ladsladslads · 19/03/2021 16:03

That quiz is mad.

There are definitely better ways of working out what dog is right for you. Start by talking to dog owners! I often get accosted by strangers on walks who ask me about the reality owning a dachshund and I'm more than happy to chat about it. Sometimes it encourages them, sometimes it puts them off! Dog ownership is a joy and a challenge in equal measure, but totally worth it really

ATowelAndAPotato · 19/03/2021 16:03

Well I just took that quiz and said I don’t want to do much walking at all and it still recommended me the same dog as you - so it’s clearly a load of crap.
There are plenty of actually useful websites that can give more accurate advice on types of dog for you. If you are serious about getting a dog, then you need to be using more credible sources for your research, or both you and the dog are going to be very unhappy.
I know that sounds harsh, but better to be realistic now than in 6 months time when you are back asking for advice about your puppy!

candlemasbells · 19/03/2021 16:04

I know someone with a lab x collie, its a hard work dog. Just get a well breed lab from a good breeder. They are easy family dogs.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 19/03/2021 16:05

As a first time dog owner, why not post a new thread detailing what you want in a dog and a bit about the type of home you can offer it and you'll get a million helpful responses about what sort of breeds might be suitable? It's a bit overwhelming sometimes when looking for a dog but maybe the posters here can help you narrow it down.

Clymene · 19/03/2021 16:05

That website is utter rubbish GrinGrin

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 19/03/2021 16:05

If it really is like that then this website is very misleading.
It is and it is.
one of the biggest problems with any cross breed is when sites (and breeders) sell a cross breed as a certain look and behaviour. That consistency only comes from decades and generations of careful breeding. When you’re crossing two separate breeds you could end up with anything. That’s how genetics work and to try and sell it as anything else is dishonest and damaging.

CollieDug · 19/03/2021 16:07

It looks like that website is owned by a marketing and branding company and is based in Los Angeles - I’d be quite sceptical of the information it provides.

(And if shedding is a big deal, there are plenty non-poodle crosses that don’t shed)

Feraltomcat · 19/03/2021 16:07

Its hugely unlikely that a mix of those two breeds will be happy with 45 minutes walking a day, my greyhound gets about double that and they are renowned for being lazy dogs which neither collies or poodles are!

RandomMess · 19/03/2021 16:08

May as well just cross a poodle with a red setter - what could go wrong???

Motorina · 19/03/2021 16:09

Collies have very specific instincts, temperaments and needs.

My friends who have them love them. They are able to give them the stimulation they need.

I they're a hot, reactive mess, constantly in need of training to keep that mind busy, and unable to settle.

If you're a collie person, they're the best dog ever. Nothing compares. So get a collie.

If you're not a collie person then a collie-cross of any shape is likely to be a disaster.

I have no idea why this cross exists or who it might appeal to.

JustNotFunAnymore · 19/03/2021 16:09

I think the idea they don't shed much is misleading. It will totally depend on the type of fur the dog has from which parent.
In all honesty i wouldn't go near a dog like this but I know I couldn't handle a high energy dog at the moment x

Spaceman1 · 19/03/2021 16:11

I would like a dog that is good with children and would be friendly towards visitors. I WFH so can keep the dog company but one that can be left alone for say 3 hours without becoming upset. Also a dog with personality/ intelligence would be a bonus. I can commit to two 30 minute walks a day during the week and long walks at the weekend. A friend on mine suggested a Havanese which of course is completely different to a Bordoodle. I'm trying to do lots of research to get the right dog so please don't have a go at me.

IntermittentParps · 19/03/2021 16:12

Christ.
We had one of those and walked/looked after the other for a neighbour when I was a kid.
They're both super-bright, proper working breeds and want to be doing something all the time. Need mental stimulation as well as physical exercise.
They're both wonderful dogs but honestly I think it'd be double trouble.

PricklesAndSpikes · 19/03/2021 16:14

My first thought at that mongrel combination was aaaaaaghhhhh followed by Nooooooo! Neither of those breeds are reliantly brilliant with kids, I grew up around loads of different dogs and the nastiest was a border collie. I've known other truly lovely ones too, but they need to be kept really busy, mentally and physically otherwise all sorts of bad behaviour can manifest! They are certainly NOT a first time dog owner breed.

I just went and did the quiz, I love giant breeds the best and would have another in a heart beat if I had the room, a couple of suggestions were a "Saint Berdoodle" and a "Pyredoodle"!! What now...?! Confused Shock

CollieDug · 19/03/2021 16:15

I got Borador too when I did the quiz and purposely put in answers which I thought would be incompatible with a border collie (eg house with no yard and ideal way to spend time with doh would be to go to cafe with friends)

You need to go to a much more reliable site.

Spaceman1 · 19/03/2021 16:18

@IntermittentParps At last someone with first hand experience but sadly confirming what everyone else has said. I'm going to have to accept that the Bordoodle is not for me.

OP posts:
Sixdegreesofseparation · 19/03/2021 16:19

2 x 30 minute walks a day just won't cut it for a Border Collie x or pure bred. I've got one and 2 Dalmatians, you're looking at a good 2 hours of proper off lead roaming and lots of flat out belting around on open ground pretty much every single day.

There's a thread about various Poo crosses, one if them sound a much better fit for you Smile

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/03/2021 16:19

I got a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.

(Anyone know what one is?)

Spaceman1 · 19/03/2021 16:22

@Sixdegreesofseparation which one are you thinking would be good for me?

OP posts:
Chunkymenrock · 19/03/2021 16:22

Op, have a look at Border terriers. They fit the bill for what you'd like.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 19/03/2021 16:22

I couldn’t think of a worse pair of breeds to cross for a first time dog owner. Then I thought maybe Cana Presario X Ovcharka, that’d be worse. Then I googled and, yep, someone’s done it. 🤦‍♀️
