Bordoodle

I've just completed a questionnaire that recommends that a Bordoodle is the best dog for me. This is a cross between a border collie and a poodle. As they are quite rare I would love to know of anyone who has one and who knows of a reputable breeder.

You do need to do some training with any dog. And games as well.
In my lifetime I’ve lived with; cocker spaniel, Scottish terrier, Yorkshire terrier, silkie terrier, English bulldog (at least 4 of these), Japanese Chin, currently a Tibetan Spaniel and an Airedale (I’m old and even my parents and children have dogs). All fit SOME components of their breed but through training and love not others.
The Airedale like all our other dogs is extremely loving and gentle.
He is vocal when the doorbell rings, we probably could work on that.
Digging only prone during spring thaw, easily managed.

Isn't a great danoodle essentially a wolfhound or otter hound with the added dose of uncertainty?

Who cares?

It only needs one 15 min walk and it has a great name.

Hoppinggreen · 19/03/2021 17:24
@hoppinggreen why do you wish that?
I love him but the Toller was less clumsy and food obsessed
I was only joking though, I wouldn’t swap him (these days )

@Ihaventgottimeforthis

Yep whippets or greyhounds, lovely xx Italian greyhounds a bit too much like fine bone china.
Whippet, my son has one and she is the sweetest girl. Closest dog to a cat in wanting to cuddle with you. But will walk for hours if you want. Italian greyhounds- a warning- friends iggy jumped off a low wall, broke one leg, jumped out of the car, broke the other. He now has two titanium implants which cost thousands.

When did all this ‘doodle, poo’ shit start? Back in my day (I’m 30 😂), someone would just say ‘oh it’s a cocker/poodle cross’ etc. These days our old family dog would be called a a sprollie or something.

Hoppinggreen · 19/03/2021 17:27

@IntermittentParps

Sorry Spaceman1!

I don't personally know any Poo crosses, but I see loads of families with them, and I'm curious; are they really good family dogs? I mean, I'm sure they're not actually nasty, but poodles generally are very lively and high-maintenance.

There is a lady on here with a cockapoo that is so reactive it kept her out of her office for 3 hours and it has taken over the kitchen to the extent that they have to eat upstairs
hogangog · 19/03/2021 17:28

there's a reason that collies are used for the work they do - they are highly intelligent and need to be stimulated ALL THE TIME. they are not ideal family pets unless you have land and can give them mental stimulation. poodle crosses can be very energetic and intelligent too. intelligence in a dog is great if you have to time to train them, channel the intelligence and keep them mentally engaged. if you don't they will become bored and destructive / badly behaved. if that's all the time you have to give to a dog, are you sure you're ready for one? an hour a day is nothing really, especially if you'd need to be driving somewhere to take them for a nice walk. as your children are older, rescue centres might have an older dog that would be a bit more suitable. puppies and young dogs are hard work and will take a lot more time than it sounds like you have.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 19/03/2021 17:28

My dog is a border collie staffie saluki Cross.
Borlukfordshire Collie?

hogangog · 19/03/2021 17:30

oh and please never get a beagle or anything crossed with one, they are like duracell bunnies until they're about 10 years old.

QueenOfLabradors · 19/03/2021 17:31

With the time constraints you've got for exercise and the age of the children, starting your dog ownership career by taking on a retired greyhound sounds like a very good idea! I have looked after eight Pointy Hounds in my dog walking career, temperament wise every single one has been a star. The only issue we've had with any of them - three out of the eight - is the urge to chase fluffy things was so strong that they could not be allowed off lead except in a completely secure enclosure.

viques · 19/03/2021 17:31

@Spaceman1

Here is the description of their character traits:

Highlights
The Bordoodle is a mixed breed dog. They are not purebreds like their Border Collie or Poodle parents.
Bordoodles come in a range of coat colors and patterns, usually incorporating a mix of black, white, gray and brown.
Bordoodles don't shed too much. Brushing your dog one or two times a week should suffice.
These dogs are extremely smart, but that intelligence can sometimes manifest itself in destructive behavior if the dog is left alone or not properly trained.
Children and Bordoodles are a great mix. In general, you couldn't ask for a better family dog than the Bordoodle. It's still important to supervise playtime with all kids and dogs.
A couple of walks every day, totaling around 45 minutes, should do the trick to keep the dog happy and healthy. Although, due to the mixed breed's intelligence, it's of great benefit to incorporate obedience tasks into the exercise mix to keep the dog alert.

Sounds like a description for someone who is more concerned with how a dog looks than thinking about what sort of lifestyle it would require to keep it happy and healthy.
Cinderellashoes · 19/03/2021 17:32

I’d have a look at your local rescue centre and see what’s available. Sometimes mongrels (cross breeds) can make the best pets. The rescue centre will have also done an assessment of their personality so can help you match up together. I’d never ever mix a poodle and border collie together, it sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 19/03/2021 17:32

Frengle? Beabull?
I’m happy with my Foxy.

StillSmallVoice · 19/03/2021 17:33

A few people have mentioned retired greyhounds. They are fantastic, don't need a lot of exercise, don't shed, and really do sleep for much of the day while you work.

There are also many of them needing homes.

Bunnybigears · 19/03/2021 17:34

A Bordoodle would be the most conflicted dog ever! It wants to run and run but also sleep lots. It wants to work and listen and learn but it also wants to doss around and play the fool. It wouldn't know if it was coming or going poor thing. Please don't pick a breed based on a quiz.

Worried234 · 19/03/2021 17:37

Surely it's a mongrel?

fallfallfall · 19/03/2021 17:38

Bichon; close friend has one, dental issues, bites her regularly (last two times needing antibiotics due to dental issues...)
Havarnese, looks like a little common mix but probably with a crazy price tag, are there any U.K. breeders? The two I’ve met don’t like strangers (anxious hide between owners legs)
Portuguese Water Dog?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/03/2021 17:41

My dog is a border collie staffie saluki Cross.
Borlukfordshire Collie?

Borstaluki, clearly.

Spaceman1 · 19/03/2021 17:44

I heard that some greyhounds need to wear a muzzle when they're outside? Also are they allowed off leash or could they run off after a squirrel never to be seen again?

I have known two. You forgot to mention that they tend towards the diva if they don’t want to do do something, don’t do dog play stuff if you want to do something more than walk, don’t like walking on stones/walking in the rain/ walking with other dogs unless they are also greys, are damned awkward at getting into the back of a car, their skin is like tissue paper, can never be let off lead so need a good generous enclosed space to be able to do the occasional whoosh, take up a huge amount of space ...............
Ihaventgottimeforthis · 19/03/2021 17:48

BORSTALUKI of course!

Love it.

He's v rare, prob worth about 10K now I'd say.

BigWolfLittleWolf · 19/03/2021 17:55

Hello OP, firstly I see you have pretty much shelved the idea of a Border x poodle.
As a border owner that is 100% the correct decision, I walk mine minimum 10 miles a day but she can go all day.
They are high strung, can be dog aggressive, can be nervous around children and are altogether not appropriate for you.
Poodles are also a high strung breed and very active; they were originally bred as working gundogs.

I think a retired greyhound would be a much better match for you

NancyPickford · 19/03/2021 17:55

Border collie - highly intelligent, but need tons and tons of exercise. Easily bored. Will certainly keep you fit with all that walking.

Feraltomcat · 19/03/2021 17:56

Presumably that is based on the two that you've known. Out of all the greyhounds in the world. Fwiw pretty much none of that applies to mine.

Feraltomcat · 19/03/2021 17:57

That was in response to viques, sorry!
