New border collie pup worries

mumnosbest · 21/02/2021 21:36

We've had our pup just 4 days and I'm already just like a new mum, worrying about her. We searched for ages but prices have sky-rocketed so ended up going with a local man not a registered breeder. I'm now worried about how little I actually know about where she has come from.

She's 9 weeks old but seems so tiny. My kitchen scales say she's just under 3oz (not sure if they're very accurate). I have her vets card. She's had both sets of jabs and been wormed and flead according to her card. The first 2 days she was fine, very sleepy but playful in between. Yesterday she had very loose poos and brought up bile but I put it down to her pinching the cat's food (I've moved it now) and eating grass. Today she had diarrhea again and been sick. She has slept most of the day. She has been awake for short intervals but has mostly just wanted to cuddle rather than play. She has barely eaten since she arrived but is drinking and weeing plenty.

I am calling the vets first thing to get her checked over. Does this all sound normal and just stress related? Or should I be really worried?
Thanks!

Pupper not pepper. Autocorrect

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 22/02/2021 17:46

Any update OP? I hope you and the puppy are both ok

Chunkymenrock · 22/02/2021 19:57

How are things, OP?

mumnosbest · 23/02/2021 00:15

Thanks for all the helpful comments. I have 3 children and have grown quite thick skinned so can take constructive criticism and recognise I'm not perfect but who is? I love the positive collie thread thanks and have known a few collies. I do have an idea of what the breed's like although I've never owned one.

Anyway back to my pup, she's been to the vets who agrees she is small but could be 8-9weeks. She also has raised the issue of the vaccines bring unlikely to have been completed already so we'll restart those when she's well again. Pup has a bad infestation of round worm, which has left her dehydrated and anemic but she's had fluids and is a little better. She's also been treated for worms and anti sickness and has been a little more active and eating. The vets given me convalescent wet food and she's back there in the morning so things are more positive but she's still poorly.

Thanks for the update OP. I'm glad she has had some treatment. Fingers crossed its onwards and upwards from here and she makes a full recovery!
Its positive that she has been a bit more active. Smile

Is she microchipped OP?

At 3lbs..?
Either the poor pup is very underweight or your vet hasn’t seen many border collies imo!

BigWolfLittleWolf · 23/02/2021 08:36

I’m so pleased she is feeling a little better though 😊

Yup.3lbs is about 1.5kg Most kittens are over a kg at that age

I'd be reporting the breeder - I suspect they're selling illegal pups under Lucy's Law.

Frazzled2207 · 23/02/2021 08:46

I’m pleased the vet was helpful.
Fingers crossed she is sorted out soon
She’s beautiful and I really hope it works out and I have no doubt you will be a good mum to her but please don’t buy from a dodgy breeder again! I can see how tempting it was though. This was in about 1990 in a different world but our border collie was bought from a local farm for £10. We knew nothing about her history at all. The farmer just said “if you decide you don’t want her just shove her back over the fence”.
She was a beautiful relatively healthy dog and a firm friend for years, but she did have some behavioural issues which in hindsight we would have hoped to avoid if we knew more of her history. Best of luck to you and the lovely puppy.

puppychaos · 23/02/2021 08:49

@mumnosbest glad to hear treatment is on its course. Hope pup recovers quickly - that must be really hard for you all.

If I'm honest (and I say this as someone who currently has a collie pup), I would get a second opinion on the age.

CommunistLegoBloc · 23/02/2021 09:00

Please report the 'breeder'. A belly full of worms, false vaccination record and a blatant lie regarding age spells disaster. I'd imagine it'll have fatal consequences for many of the puppies he sells.

Glad your puppy is doing okay - I would be looking for a second opinion too though. 3lb is not a 9 week old collie's weight. Is she microchipped?

Greygreenblue · 23/02/2021 09:09

She really doesn’t look like a 9 week old border collie. She’s tiny! Either she’s had those round worms for a while (so hasn’t been growing properly) or she’s not purebred . Given how sick she is it is probably the former. Here is a pic of my bc pup at 9 weeks for comparison, it was a while ago but I would have said she was closer to 5-6kg (what is that in pounds? 12-15??).

Could someone link to the positive border collie thread please?

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 23/02/2021 09:34

I agree with the others. Please please please report the breeder.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 23/02/2021 10:24

Poor wee mite.

Once upon a time, I was given very, very young puppies to raise (little ones who were abandoned). The main objective was to get them through each night and get them well enough to find forever homes.

I’m no expert. But in my experience, if you think your puppy is ailing then it is. And time is of the essence as the little souls can go downhill so quickly. The vets were amazing - I nurtured them and loved them but the vets got them through all the major problems they had.

I didn’t mean to be harsh before. I really didnt.

I would report the breeder.

I wish you and your wee one well. Flowers

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 23/02/2021 12:49

I'm glad she's a bit better. Did the vet weigh her - was that different from your 3lb?

I hope she recovers quickly.

Mama1980 · 23/02/2021 13:41

I'm glad the vet was helpful. I have a springer/lurcher from a rescue litter and she was absolutely tiny as a pup (she's now 13!) largely due to poor nutrition and worms prior to her arrival at the rescue, but once treated and on the up she picked up very fast.
Is she eating better?
Fingers crossed the vets goes well today.

loveyouradvice · 23/02/2021 13:51

So glad you updated us - and good luck! Stressful times for you and your wee pup. Really hope she picks up fast... like children, puppies can turn a corner very fast.

Meanwhile, if you do have the stamina please do report the breeder - or ask on here how to do it - but I recognise that with three kids and a sick pup you have a lot on your plate!

Thank you!

Sorry I haven't replied to all your responses and questions. I've had a manic few days what with my poorly pup and going back to work on Monday to a class of 4 year olds, after a sleepless Sunday night! I do really appreciate all of your advice and kind words.
Little Oreo is back at the vets for more fluids and antibiotics. This was planned after I brought her home last night. She was a little better this morning and the vets said much livelier by lunchtime so I'm looking forward to a much happier and healthier little girl when I go for her in an hour.

Her weight was 1kg/3.5lbs so my scales are a little out (explains my baking). The vet said she may be the runt of the litter but has also had the worm infestation for some time. She said her age was plausible and it's impossible to say for sure.

Once I get a minute and have all my facts straight with the vet, I will of course report the breeder. I hate to think he could do this again and know my little pup had siblings who might be in a similar state, not to mention poor old mum. Where do I start? The RSPCA? police? Both?

OP posts:
Frazzled2207 · 23/02/2021 16:39

I don't know about reporting - someone more knowledgeable will be along but I'm pleased to hear she is a little better. Hopefully the worms issue is readily treatable and she will make a full recovery.

BigWolfLittleWolf · 23/02/2021 16:51

Reporting would be your local dog warden, your local council and the RSPCA I imagine, I’m not sure if it is something the police would deal with

2bazookas · 23/02/2021 16:59

are you feeding her exactly what she ate before you got her? Same brand, quantity, time of day?

An abrupt change of diet will make even adult dogs sick or loose.

Take the vaccination cert to the vets with you and ask them if its genuine. I'd be suspicious of a "full vaccination" by 9 weeks.
