How often do you bath your dog?

We rarely do, as despite being double coated and uber fluffy, our girl doesn't seem to attract much muck (she steps round puddles, doesn't like getting wet past her ankles and rarely rolls in anything..bit of a princess!)

I also groom her every other night. However with all the rain she currently smells ..well doggy and so tomorrow when DH is home she will be showered and shampooed. She doesn't like it much but tolerates it with a depressed face.

I'm sure I have read that it isn't good for their coats to be shampooed too often, hence she only gets washed every few months, but I'd be interested to know if this is the case, or whether it's coat dependent. Mine's a double coated Eurasier and she doesn't like the hairdryer so once wet it's HOURS before she stops being soggy even after being towel dried!

Mine is a working cocker and clipped short so fine hair.

He does get a shampoo when he gets groomed every 4-6 weeks but other than that it's just a hose down in the bath with water.

If I do have to shampoo him (he has got poo on his bottom/tail having a poorly stomach etc) I use a tiny bit of puppy shampoo.

CatsAndEyeliner · 30/10/2020 17:42

Probably once every few weeks at a minimum. He’s obsessed with finding and rolling in fox poo.

But he’s very small and short haired so it’s not too much of a faff. And I use a gentle oat shampoo that’s kinder to his skin.

GooodMythicalMorning · 30/10/2020 18:00

Never by us, but he goes tp the groom room every couple of months.

NetballHoop · 30/10/2020 18:04

Only if he's rolled in something. So every week.

Smallsteps88 · 30/10/2020 18:09

About twice a year. Hes a golden retriever, hates the bath, but loves the hairdryer. I can’t lift him into the bath anymore though and he’s in desperate need of a scrub so I’m not sure how I’m going to manage it.

Marrowfatpeas · 30/10/2020 18:12

Never. He goes swimming most days though, and is not a naturally stinky dog (except for when he rolls in unmentionables, then that’s lathered with animosity fox poo shampoo and sloshed off.)

Bunnybigears · 30/10/2020 18:16

About twice a year, he has a Christmas bath and then one at some other point when I feel he needs it. He doesnt roll in things and keeps himself clean.

Giggorata · 30/10/2020 18:25

Rarely, as it takes the waterproofing oils out of their coats, and they swim daily. If they roll in poo, or fox musk, or long dead pike, however... 😡🤮

CatsAndEyeliner · 30/10/2020 18:27

I love the idea of your goldie loving a hairdryer @Smallsteps88

Glenthebattleostrich · 30/10/2020 18:31

Probably not as often as a poodle cross needs!! She hates water, she screams as though she's being beaten.

I take her into the shower with me once every 2 months before she gets her hair cut or more if she rolls in fox poo or decomposing animal (her personal favourite).

40somethingJBJ · 30/10/2020 18:45

Mines a poodle x and she gets bathed when she gets clipped, which is 3-4 times a year.

Floralnomad · 30/10/2020 18:56

Mine is fully clipped and goes to the groomers every 4 weeks , I just spot wash in between as necessary

PollyRoulson · 30/10/2020 19:03

The best thing I ever did (sad person with no life) was to fit a hot and cold outside tap.

It makes hosing down dogs so easy. I just hose them down when they are muddy.

Billericaydicky · 30/10/2020 19:05

@PollyRoulson omg I do want one of those! Are they difficult to fit?

BooksAreNotEssentialInWales · 30/10/2020 19:06

Mine is single coated and our walk is filthy so she’s in the sink most days. She’s small and her underneath gets very muddy. I just use warm water and save shampoo and conditioner for when she’s stinky.

CatsAndEyeliner · 30/10/2020 19:09

A hot outside tap @PollyRoulson ?! I am in awe!

unicornparty · 30/10/2020 19:10

Ours gets groomed every 3 months usually but it's the first shooting day of the season for us tomorrow so she gets a bath every other week after a shoot through the winter.

GrouchyKiwi · 30/10/2020 19:13

We have a Newf, so I feel your double-coated drying-time woes. She gets a shower maybe twice a year, if I think she's particularly fragrant or muddy, and sees a groomer twice a year too. I generally figure a paddle in the sea or pond sorts out the worst of the gross, and I have to clean her nethers a couple of times a week as she crouches stupid low when peeing (dammit). She smells pretty good for a dog, though. I like to sniff her head. She has only rolled in something smelly once.

GrouchyKiwi · 30/10/2020 19:15

smallsteps Would your boy tolerate a shower? I can't lift a 45kg Newf into the bath so we use the shower instead.

Parkmama · 30/10/2020 19:17

@Smallsteps88 have you seen the Mud Daddy? We have a black lab and she's too big for the bath now so we use the MD in the garden with warm soapy water and it's excellent. We wash her as and when she needs it, if she smells or is muddy or has been swimming. We just a small amount of dog shampoo then give her a good groom and a rub with a towel.

vanillandhoney · 30/10/2020 19:18

With shampoo, every 2-3 months, but he gets a hose down if he's muddy or covered in sand from the beach, which is probably 2-3 times a week.

Derelictwreck · 30/10/2020 19:18

Mines a poodle and gets washed every month, one month just a wash, then next a wash and groom.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 30/10/2020 19:22

Our brown lab can’t pass a river or loch without jumping in, and the water round here is lovely and clean, so she only needs bathing when she has rolled in something offensive.

The oral reason we ever had, for bathing a dog, was the time our other dog, who is no longer with us, rolled in half a very dead, runny seal at the beach. She honked so badly that even the brown lab (a connoisseur of foul smells) wouldn’t sit near her. She got bathed twice in the garden - dh wanted to bring her inside, upstairs and through our bedroom to the shower in the en suite, but I vetoed that bright idea! Even after two baths in the garden, she still smelt, so did then get to have a nice warm shower upstairs (she was Very Unimpressed with a cold hose in the garden) - unfortunately we had run out of dog shampoo, so had to use the cheapest shower gel we could find - Lynx Africa! Grin

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 30/10/2020 19:28

In an ideal world I would every 6-8 weeks. In reality it's at least once a week because my dog seeks out fox poo, mud, muddy puddles, ponds....

FortunaMajor · 30/10/2020 19:38

Proper bath with shampoo - probably no more than twice a year.

Undercarriage rinse in the shower when muddy - at least once daily in winter as we do some pretty muddy countryside walks and she's never met a puddle she didn't like.

She is also quite happy to be blow dried and has a doggy dressing gown for when I don't have time.
