How often do you bath your dog?

We rarely do, as despite being double coated and uber fluffy, our girl doesn't seem to attract much muck (she steps round puddles, doesn't like getting wet past her ankles and rarely rolls in anything..bit of a princess!)

I also groom her every other night. However with all the rain she currently smells ..well doggy and so tomorrow when DH is home she will be showered and shampooed. She doesn't like it much but tolerates it with a depressed face.

I'm sure I have read that it isn't good for their coats to be shampooed too often, hence she only gets washed every few months, but I'd be interested to know if this is the case, or whether it's coat dependent. Mine's a double coated Eurasier and she doesn't like the hairdryer so once wet it's HOURS before she stops being soggy even after being towel dried!

That is a bath to me, @MirandaMarple. I don’t put my dog (also a lab) in the family bath or shower.

  1. He’s not allowed upstairs.

  2. He’d freak out

  3. His hair would block my plug holes

A lot of people seem to routinely bath their dogs or have them bathed at the groomers, which generally leaves them smelling perfumed and very undog like.

I wonder what the dogs feel about it, given, that left to themselves many dog like to roll in poo and dead things.

My dog goes to the groomers to have her dew claws clipped and her paws tided up from time to time. I don't have her bathed but, until I told them not to, they used a highly perfumed spray on her coat, which made her itch. It also made me cough when I was near her. Awful stuff, like an overpowering air freshener.

I really can't imagine dogs like to smell like that.

Every week in Episoothe. Their coats are exceptionally shiny.

They sleep IN bed with me Hmm

CoolYourBeansMySon · 05/11/2020 00:34

My old boy goes to the groomers in the spring to brush out his shaggy winter coat. I used to take him twice a year but he's 15 now and it stresses him and I'd rather a grubby dog then a sad dog.
My girl has never been to the groomers as she's so nervous and she's such a floofer. I'd love to get her done professionally. So, only when she rolls in poo. Cow and horse are her particular favourites and she's so delighted when she does it. Not so much when she gets chucked in the bath when we get home.

About once a month. He hasn't yet rolled in anything unmentionable or dived in muddy puddles and isn't a naturally smelly dog. Dirt doesn't seem to stick. He is brushed a few times a week.

Labrador owner here, generally I would only bath a lab when they get very very stinky so not often at all. But my latest Lab goes to a doggy swimming pool once a month & they shower him afterwards to get the chlorine out of his coat, so he now smells lovely all the time

I had 2 pomeranians that never smelt and never needed bathing then I got a Yorkshire terrier I thought great non shedding when what it actually meant was she needed a lot more grooming and bathing then the poms ever did when everyone always assumed they’re grooming needs would be more Confused

I also can't figure out how I'd get two muddy Labs frequently through the house, up two flights of stairs and into the bath without ruining my whole house?!

As others have said, swimming helps, I always try and end the walk near a clean lake/river then they are just wet and not dirty.

Fandantastic · 05/11/2020 20:38

Twice today!

Bad tummy left ‘issues’ that were being bum shuffled around the house leaving lovely little trails. Full shampoo and condition done

And then this evening after muddy walk and rolling in fox scent. Shampooed legs, belly and head/chest (where the smell was).

Usually about once a week. Small and low bellied, v long haired, lives in the country and loves anything stinky. Considering getting the groomer to just shave it all off ;)

fitflopqueen · 05/11/2020 21:21

I have a springer so most days is a muddy one here, she either goes in the stream at the end of a walk if not too mucky then carefully walked back onto the drive or she gets dunked in the utility sink or downstairs shower if something stinky needs getting off. Wouldnt shampoo unless trying to get something disgusting off. She swims most days if allowed, does have her own towel collection and a drying coat mind!.

bluetongue · 06/11/2020 21:39

Almost never. My boy is a whippet and grooms himself like a cat. His white markings always stay bright white Smile He also hates dirt, mud and water and jumps over puddles.

loveyouradvice · 09/11/2020 11:22

Every couple of months probably... basically when he starts smelling!

Allington · 09/11/2020 14:54

When she rolled in something particularly disgusting... a rinse of her undercarriage after especially muddy walks in the shower, and a wipe down if generally a bit damp and gritty.

She acts as if she is being tortured slowly to death, so I keep it to a minimum!

LittleTiger007 · 09/11/2020 15:02

As people have said, it varies. Our Labrador never needs a bath, just a hose down when he’s been running and sliding in mud (he hates water so never swims in a muddy pond or anything similar). Our American shepherd on the other hand has a big shaggy coat and he loves to roll in fox poo 🙄🤢😡 so he gets unceremoniously bathed whenever that happens or about every month in the winter. He’s much closer to the ground than the Labrador too so his white ‘bib’ can get pretty mucky after a run in the woods in winter. He hates the bath though.... it’s like we are torturing him. 😒🙄

LittleTiger007 · 09/11/2020 15:06

Following on from above I groom my American shepherd weekly so that sorts a lot of dirt out and we keep a towel by the door to wipe them down. They definitely don’t sleep in our bed though! They would have to have a daily bath if they were going to do that. That’s too much hassle and our bed isn’t big enough (even though we have a super king!)

Snoopdogowner · 10/11/2020 21:11

My cockapoo loves mud so I try to only hose legs and end of ears as it drags its ears in everything. Today he deciding to pick up a soiled nappy after going into a river and getting muddy so I had to give him a bath. Which he hated.

MrsJunglelow · 10/11/2020 21:53

Pretty much never.
She just spends the whole time pulling the plug out....
Trying to use a hair dryer on her is dangerous too because she tries to bite it.
She loves a vigorous rubbing down with a towel though

HarrietOh · 10/11/2020 21:58

Usually just when he smells really very doggy, you know when you walk into a room he’s been in and the smell hits you. Usually only 2-3 times a year I’d say.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 11/11/2020 21:22

I have a terrier cross breed, I shower him off weekly as he gets really grubby and muddy. I only use shampoo about once a month though as I read on here it can dry their coats out!!
