How often do you bath your dog?

We rarely do, as despite being double coated and uber fluffy, our girl doesn't seem to attract much muck (she steps round puddles, doesn't like getting wet past her ankles and rarely rolls in anything..bit of a princess!)

I also groom her every other night. However with all the rain she currently smells ..well doggy and so tomorrow when DH is home she will be showered and shampooed. She doesn't like it much but tolerates it with a depressed face.

I'm sure I have read that it isn't good for their coats to be shampooed too often, hence she only gets washed every few months, but I'd be interested to know if this is the case, or whether it's coat dependent. Mine's a double coated Eurasier and she doesn't like the hairdryer so once wet it's HOURS before she stops being soggy even after being towel dried!

@GrouchyKiwi

smallsteps Would your boy tolerate a shower? I can't lift a 45kg Newf into the bath so we use the shower instead.
No, he runs out of the shower and knocks my flying while soaking the bathroom Grin

[quote Parkmama]@Smallsteps88 have you seen the Mud Daddy? We have a black lab and she's too big for the bath now so we use the MD in the garden with warm soapy water and it's excellent. We wash her as and when she needs it, if she smells or is muddy or has been swimming. We just a small amount of dog shampoo then give her a good groom and a rub with a towel.

Thanks for this!

Usually once every 7-8 weeks at the groomers. She's not generally a mucky dog so rarely needs a bath in between!

GhostsUpMePosts · 30/10/2020 19:42

Much more often than I'd like. (Fox poo roller here)

JonHammIsMyJamm · 30/10/2020 20:45

Only when he’s rolled in something disgusting or been in the bog at the local allotments Hmm. Otherwise he gets a quick going over with the hose if it’s just mud. I do keep an old towel in the boot of the car to give him a good wipe down after every wet or mucky walk, I find it really reduces the amount of ‘hose time’ required.

SJaneS48 · 30/10/2020 21:44

Typically, about an hour after I’ve cleaned the bathroom or if I’ve taken her for a lunchtime walk and have to be on a Client call in 5 seconds!

Personally, I aim for once a month but it does depend on the season and whether I’ve managed to recall her before she gets a fox poo roll in or jumps into stagnant water. Like the PP, I place a towel at the front door before leaving the house as we live rurally and getting absolutely filthy and covered in mud and undergrowth doesn’t bother her in the least. Pretty much like my human children really!

SJaneS48 · 30/10/2020 21:48

@FortunaMajor - I love the idea of a doggy dressing gown! Where was it from?

SunnyUpNorth · 30/10/2020 21:56

We have a show cocker spaniel with a full coat so he probably gets a bath every week or two in the winter as he just gets so muddy. I don’t wash his head and back, just his legs and tummy. I used to just rinse him with water from the hose but after showering him down, shampooing and showering again and seeing how much mud still came out I now give him a proper wash. It’s only after muddy forest walks, not street walks.

FortunaMajor · 30/10/2020 22:34

@SJaneS48 The original one was the Ruff & Tumble drying coat, but I've also made two from old towels, as in winter we need them so regularly.

hiredandsqueak · 30/10/2020 23:14

Our Lhasa is groomed every six weeks so is bathed then. When it's wet out she has to be showered off because short legs and a propensity to trawl through all the puddles and mud she finds means she is invariably filthy. Only when she has rolled in something foul though do I shampoo her at home.

pigsDOfly · 31/10/2020 00:37

Almost never.

She's rolled in fox poo a couple of times so she had to have a bath for that, other than that I'll dunk her paws in a bucket of warm water and rinse her undercarriage off if she's particularly muddy (she's very low to the ground).

She's double coated and under normal circumstances I brush her a couple of times a week, but at the moment she's going through a massive moult so it's every day.

Was told by my vet that she has a 'particularly healthy coat and skin'.

Toontown · 31/10/2020 00:44

Can I ask about going to the groomers. We have had 4 dogs all mongrels and never been to a groomers. Is it only for certain breeds? Does their hair just keep growing?

Floralnomad · 31/10/2020 01:01

@Toontown groomers will do any breed , ours is a patterdale x and he gets a very thick coat and moults like mad so I have him bathed and clipped short every 4 weeks which makes it easier to keep him clean on walks etc . When he was there in the week they had a poodle , a golden retriever and a Labrador in .

caringcarer · 31/10/2020 01:19

I have 2 Lhasa Apso and they go to groomer every 8 weeks for bath and trim and we bath them once in-between do once a month. We wash them both in flea shampoo and human conditioner to keep their coats silky.

Girlintheframe · 31/10/2020 06:33

Every couple of months here. It's really just when required. Our dog doesn't often have a doggy smell but when he does or has rolled in something whiffy we wash him with some doggy oatmeal shampoo.
He tolerates it rather than enjoys it but we've been showering since he was a pup so is well used to it.

FippertyGibbett · 31/10/2020 06:39

Every week.

Toontown · 31/10/2020 07:34

@Floralnomad thanks. I thought it was for breeds whose hair wouldn't stop growing.

Floralnomad · 31/10/2020 10:03

@Toontown some people just take them to the groomers for a bath as it’s easier than doing it yourself you don’t have to have a haircut at all .

MsMarvellous · 31/10/2020 12:55

Never he hates it. He gets wiped down with a damp cloth after a muddy walk and gets toes and ears checked for grass. It's on my list of things to teach him to like, but one job at a time!

Stellaris22 · 31/10/2020 13:00

We have a short haired breed and only a quick clean if she's rolled in something. We don't bath as we want to protect the natural oils and waterproof quality of her coat.

Serin · 31/10/2020 15:26

We have the worlds scruffiest Lhasa Apso, he loves muck and digging with his nose.
He is so woolly that its like taking a mop for a walk.
He has a bath nearly every week. I tend to do him myself as DH and DC cant be trusted to tell the difference between malaseb and Penhaligans.

Asdf12345 · 31/10/2020 19:34

Never a bath as such, but the hosepipe if needed, that must be once every 3-4 months.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 02/11/2020 09:13

I’ve had to give him an emergency bath this morning as he had an explosive accident all over the kitchen, over night Envy. Plus obviously disinfecting the kitchen from top to bottom too. HAPPY MONDAY TO ME!

(Dog is fine, btw)

Sitdowncupoftea · 03/11/2020 22:53

I never bath mine. The shed constantly so don't smell. They get a rubbish down if they roll in poop. They like to swim so stay clean.

MirandaMarple · 04/11/2020 21:37

In twenty years of owning Labradors, once. She was a rescue and lived with horses in a stable. She stunk.

They get the hosepipe and fairy liquid and a rigorous rub down with a towel.
