Rescuing dog on Saturday please help

Hi I'm collecting a dog from our neighbours on Saturday that is in terrible condition. He's 13 ish, cries constantly and bangs into shit in the garden. He lives in a kennel and the rspca is not interested so I'm going to get him on Saturday. Obviously the first thing we need to do is take him to the vet, but he stinks so maybe he'll need a wash first?

He's so passive it makes me so sad, he's never been for a walk and it's only now we're able to talk to the neighbour about maybe giving him up.

Do we keep him away from our other dog? And he's never been inside so how do we transition him? I'm not a green dog owner but I've never actually picked a dog up away from its neglectful owners before.

@Veterinari ah thank you! Me too. Poor old sausage. He is so sweet, he doesn't have much interest in toys but why would he he's never had one before. He did come up to me yeah for the first time for a lean, I wouldn't say cuddle but he put his head on my knee and leaned into me it was very cute.

DH has relented and agreed he can stay ❤️

I am so, so happy that this lovely old man is finally enjoying love and kindness and proper home comforts, for however long that may be. Crying Delighted to read that he's perking up so much! Thank you for taking him in.

Mrsjayy · 17/09/2020 12:03

GoatsInBoats · 17/09/2020 14:36

Oh my word, I don't even really like dogs, but I really like Keith. He's magic. I hope he continues to perk up. You've done a nice thing, OP.

WarriorsComeOutToPlayay · 17/09/2020 18:12

So pleased at how well he is doing!

Your dogs are so lovely to be accepting of him. Thank goodness your DH has come to his senses and risked himself being rehomed...

Love this thread, poor dog to have had such a horrid life.
He’s probably on the hard floor because it’s closer to what he’s used to. He must wonder where on Earth he is.

Ps I wouldn’t care if the neighbour didn’t agree... glad they did though.

So happy to read the updates op, you're wonderful.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 18/09/2020 00:39

OP, I just wanted to say that you’re lovely. 😊

Keith is a lucky boy to have you. He will finally know what it is to be cared for and loved. He is absolutely gorgeous. What a lovely thread. ❤️

Can anyone help? I have suspicions that our neighbours may have stolen Keith. I have his microchip number but identibase won't confirm what the address is or even roughly where it is. I asked the vet to have a look but all they gave me was the number.

I really want to check he hasn't been stolen, any ideas?

Ah! I think I've just seen your post on AIBU about this and have responded there. In addition to what I said there, some of our local "find lost dog" volunteers (not DogLost specifically) have scanners and seem to be able to locate the registered holders of microchips. Try your local dog facebook page to find out who these people might be in your area (our local facebook groups for dogs are **4dogs or (town name beginning with W) Woofers, etc I am not signed up to facebook but they have public facebook groups (or whatever they are called) so I can read them.

Beamur · 18/09/2020 13:20

Presumably the 'real' owners would have logged with the chipping company to make sure that he couldn't be re-registered?
Could you ask the ID company to change details to yours but say to them you suspect he may have been stolen some time ago.
Ask the Police for advice maybe?

espressoontap · 18/09/2020 13:40

Oh Keith is a beautiful BT - they are such special dogs. Thank goodness he has you.

If you are on FB there are lots of BT pages which may help on the microchip front - I can get you the link for one I'm thinking in particular if you want it.

ifonerememberstoturnonthelight · 18/09/2020 13:54

I managed to get the pet database to tell me if he had ever been registered stolen with them and he has. So I'll look into how to do it over the weekend. Maybe I'll get in touch with a dog charity near me that regularly scans lost dogs. He's such a cute dog, he really doesn't like umbrellas or things on the floor Hmm he paws at them and cries really pitifully until they're removed from his way. He also won't settle in his bed without a blanket to Ruck up around him and paw it into a nice pile 😂

daisychain1620 · 18/09/2020 13:54

Do you mean the neighbors who used to own him? Poor dog, I hope you find him

ifonerememberstoturnonthelight · 18/09/2020 14:06

Yes I'm now certain the neighbours that used to own him stole him. He was registered stolen in 2008. I mean the chances of us finding his original owners are slim but I'm going to try. I couldn't live with myself if I didn't try.

This could be the happy ending to end all happy endings! A reunion!

You, OP, are a good person.
