Hi I'm collecting a dog from our neighbours on Saturday that is in terrible condition. He's 13 ish, cries constantly and bangs into shit in the garden. He lives in a kennel and the rspca is not interested so I'm going to get him on Saturday. Obviously the first thing we need to do is take him to the vet, but he stinks so maybe he'll need a wash first?

He's so passive it makes me so sad, he's never been for a walk and it's only now we're able to talk to the neighbour about maybe giving him up.

Do we keep him away from our other dog? And he's never been inside so how do we transition him? I'm not a green dog owner but I've never actually picked a dog up away from its neglectful owners before.

He's actually a bit brighter today, he follows our dogs round happily, he can't hear a single thing, hasn't got a clue when you're near him. Doesn't react to loud noises at all so pretty sure he's very deaf. He takes himself into his crate when he wants to sleep but he did brave it into the big dog bed yesterday! He is so placid.

How wonderful that he has your love and kindness, for as long as it may be. I've no doubt you will act with Keith's best interests in mind as you seem a very responsible (and bloody lovely) dog owner.

shesgonebatshitagain · 14/09/2020 12:55

He is absolutely adorable. Such a lovely thing you have done for him.
Hope he continues to settle in well : all this love and kindness must be quite something for him after what he has been through

Mydogmylife · 15/09/2020 21:41

@ifonerememberstoturnonthelight
Any news on Keith ?

Allington · 16/09/2020 08:56

He looks very sweet Smile hope he recovers enough to enjoy hanging out with you and your other dogs for a while

ifonerememberstoturnonthelight · 16/09/2020 12:47

He's really perked up now. Totally different dog to Friday. I mean he's still deaf and partially blind but he's lifting his head up and looking at you now, he still walks in circles but he seems happy.

He's gone to the groomers today for a wash and a tidy up.

I've been thinking of Keith, I'm glad he's a bit brighter. Well done you and keep on letting us know how he's doing!

dublingirl66 · 16/09/2020 13:47

Aww my gosh !!

I'm going to make a donation to my local animal rescue centre as I have been so moved by this

Poor poor dog
Thanks for being so kind

Beamur · 16/09/2020 13:48

A lovely update. Fingers crossed for Keith that he's still got enough time left to enjoy his new life.

Mrsjayy · 16/09/2020 13:52

Aww Keith is a heartbreaker I hope the time he has left is good to him which I'm sure it will be Smile

Great news OP. Is he on any pain relief or treatment for the dental infection?
Keeping my fingers crossed for him

ifonerememberstoturnonthelight · 16/09/2020 14:48

@Veterinari yes, he's on loxicom and a paracetamol solution for pain, he's on noroclav 250mg and metrobactin 250mg plus omeprazole and was on pro kolin but he's stopped that now. He's put on 250g since Friday which isn't a lot but it's a start. :)

He looks lovely after his bath , hopefully he will be well enough to have some dental work done eventually . It’s lovely to hear that he’s improving .

Not sure if that's a neglect thing or a BT thing. My dog smells much the same! He looks like a different dog, so lovely to see.

GentlyGentlyOhDear · 16/09/2020 15:41

He looks amazing after his wash. So pleased to hear he has perked up and gained weight. Please keep us updated on his progress!

kerkyra · 16/09/2020 16:30

Whatever you decide to do,just want to say thank you for being so kind.

kerkyra · 16/09/2020 16:31

Oh,just read updates...fantastic!

dublingirl66 · 16/09/2020 16:46

He is just gorgeous

KateF · 16/09/2020 16:59

What a lovely boy. You have done a wonderful thing. Do you think he's been neglected his whole life? I don't understand why people don't give a dog up if they're unable or unwilling to care for it Sad

ifonerememberstoturnonthelight · 16/09/2020 17:19

@KateF yes I think he has been neglected his whole life. He doesn't know what to do with me and DH, we're totally alien beings to him.

My last two dogs have been rescues. I've never been able to fully rehabilitate them from their issues, but they've had comfortable and kind lives with me.

shesgonebatshitagain · 16/09/2020 22:00

Thank you for this thread, it is so uplifting to know that there are people like you around.
I’m sure I can see a smile on his little chops

Bingowin · 16/09/2020 22:12

He's adorable. How can anyone leave a dog like that?

Sounds like he's adjusting well and that's great that he likes your dogs.

Oh brilliant - we'll done @ifonerememberstoturnonthelight - it sounds like you're giving him a gold-standard retirement! I'm just so sad/angry he had such a rubbish life.

Thank you Thanks
