Hi I'm collecting a dog from our neighbours on Saturday that is in terrible condition. He's 13 ish, cries constantly and bangs into shit in the garden. He lives in a kennel and the rspca is not interested so I'm going to get him on Saturday. Obviously the first thing we need to do is take him to the vet, but he stinks so maybe he'll need a wash first?

He's so passive it makes me so sad, he's never been for a walk and it's only now we're able to talk to the neighbour about maybe giving him up.

Do we keep him away from our other dog? And he's never been inside so how do we transition him? I'm not a green dog owner but I've never actually picked a dog up away from its neglectful owners before.

Poor Keith Sad
It does sound like the RSPCA might've told him to buck up his ideas ( your neighbour) and improve the kennel as he was an elderly dog living outside .
Your NDN most likely didn't want to spend any money so that was he was keen to let you have him ( and with his ailments)
That poor animal must've been one hell of a tough little dog to withstand how many winters . And each loss of his senses his whole world would have closed in.

It is sd you didn't have more time with him but you have saved him the misery of another winter which he most likely wouldn't have survived .
He did indeed have love , warmth, food , Vet Care and company in those last days .Something he probably never had .

I bet you'd LOVE to give your neighbour that bottle of vodka and I can think exactly where you'd like to stick it Angry

I think it’s lovely that his last memories are of a safe warm house and the amazing family that loved him. Not the horrible conditions he had before.

Oh God OP, I cried my eyes out. You wonderful human being. Love to you & Keith who crossed over the rainbow bridge happy thanks to you 🌈♥️ Love from me & my three rescues xxxxx

I'm so so sorry, all my thoughts are with you and I'm sending every strength your way. You were so amazing for him. I hope he's got another toy sheep to play with over rainbow bridge. Thank you for everything you did for lovely Keith X

Hi OP..this is Kenny.. He was PTS on the 5th 0f September. The day you rescued Keith. .We were all devastated. .can't believe he's no longer with us.. But...
Your OP was posted and running along side ours. (Knew this time would come).I was reading it but unable to post.(well a very short Thankyou).I really really hope I don't offend you when I say that Keiths story helped me a lot..I told friends how lucky Kenny was that he'd always had warmth, love and care and that there was a little dog on MN who was being rescued the same day as Kenny was being pts and that he'd never had that.. In my tears I silently willed Keith to live but if he couldn't then to feel the incredible love and kindness that you were giving him in his final days..I am so so sorry that Keith has died but I thankyou from the bottom of my heart for what you did for him..I'm imagining him in doggy heaven with Kenny..(I whispered in Kennys ear to look after Keith if he met him up there)
You made the right descision ..I'm so sorry

The greatest kindness that could be given, you gave to Keith. You took him out of pain, misery, neglect and hopelessness. You cleaned him, fed him, gave him medical attention, found the history of his life, loved him and soothed him. How blessed he must have felt to spend the last few weeks of his life in such a different place to what he’d always known. And then when he needed the greatest kindness of ending his suffering, you gave it to him. We can all only hope to spend the last weeks of our lives feeling as Keith did.
You are the highest example of humans’ duty to the dogs we domesticated to depend on us, and I commend you. To Keith 🦴 💕

ifonerememberstoturnonthelight · 28/09/2020 04:49

I know I did the right thing as he was so sick, he couldn't walk as his back legs were so weak and couldn't stand up without falling over plus the blood stained vomit and diarrhoea, and if it was one of our other dogs I wouldn't be hesitating thinking I did the right thing but I feel like I failed him by not trying some other medication? I dnno I kind of expected him to be with us more than 2 weeks.

I did the right thing I know I did. It just hurts

@ifonerememberstoturnonthelight You did more for Keith than anyone in his previous life, you tried, it can’t have been easy, but in the end you did the kindest thing anyone can do for a dog in pain, look for the star, he’s been shining so bright Flowers

ifonerememberstoturnonthelight · 28/09/2020 14:48

Yeah thank you :) @Bonkersblond I just received the vet report for the last 2 weeks and I'm surprised he made it as long as he did tbh

Keep talking here about him, never has a dog stolen the hearts of so many Mumsnetters, we were all routing for him, but he’s at peace now xx

fourquenelles · 28/09/2020 16:20

My beautiful boy Rafa who went to the Rainbow Bridge 3 weeks ago after lung cancer was discovered during x rays for a cough. Also his 2 companions Javi and Teese who are still with me.

I rescued these boys when they were in their middle age so I should be more used to knowing they don't have a lot of time left with me. But I will never get used to that.

RIP Keith. You knew love at the end

I'm terribly sorry to hear the sad news, but glad he had a happy, warm and comfortable end with you. I told my mum today about him (been following the thread and updating her) and she had a little cry.
Hope you're ok. I don't understand how people can neglect dogs like that and how continually forgiving dogs are of humans Sad

Rest in peace dear, sweet Keith. What you did for him in his last 2 weeks would have erased so much of his rubbish life.

You are wonderful and he was a wonderful dog.

Lots of love to you, you did an amazing thing.

Piglet208 · 01/10/2020 14:45

I have just come back to this thread and read your sad news. RIP Keith. Please take comfort that instead of Keith ending his days, tortured with pain and neglect, he instead found love. You made his final few weeks comfortable and you have sent him over the rainbow bridge with the new knowledge that some humans are kind and wonderful.

curiouscatgotkilled · 02/10/2020 20:22

Dogs are guardian angels and you were Keith's angel, thanks to you he died knowing a loving home and kindness from people and doggy friends. StarStarStar
