Rescuing dog on Saturday please help

Hi I'm collecting a dog from our neighbours on Saturday that is in terrible condition. He's 13 ish, cries constantly and bangs into shit in the garden. He lives in a kennel and the rspca is not interested so I'm going to get him on Saturday. Obviously the first thing we need to do is take him to the vet, but he stinks so maybe he'll need a wash first?

He's so passive it makes me so sad, he's never been for a walk and it's only now we're able to talk to the neighbour about maybe giving him up.

Do we keep him away from our other dog? And he's never been inside so how do we transition him? I'm not a green dog owner but I've never actually picked a dog up away from its neglectful owners before.

I would be looking at easy to digest specialist food. Had the equivalent for our cat when he had been unwell and lost a lot of weight.

Of course lots of roast chicken would help Wink

LunaNorth · 19/09/2020 22:07

I bet he’d enjoy some Greek yoghurt too.

littlealexhorne · 19/09/2020 22:51

It warmed my heart so much that he's been playing with a toy sheep! I have a rescue dog myself that took ages to 'get' toys, having proably not had any before, so I know the joy. Do keep us updated on lovely Keith

ifonerememberstoturnonthelight · 19/09/2020 23:09

@littlealexhorne he does have some issues, he has a tendency to vomit if you touch him too much. Maybe we expected him
To do too much too soon, he's only been here a week! I just had this idea if we didn't stroke him he'd never get used to us but I think I'm gonna take a step back and give him some space.

Oops below was a photo of him in the big bed with our other older dog. He did that himself

He is adorable!!!

ifonerememberstoturnonthelight · 19/09/2020 23:14

And this is right now, he slept in front of the fire for a little while but then we moved his bed away from
Near it as he kept trying to get onto the hearth and lick the stove HmmGrin

The photos of him are really misleading! He looks really chonky but the line on his back literally is his spine, he needs to put some serious chub on! Which is hard as he keeps being sick because he's overwhelmed, I might let him potter around tomorrow and not intervene unless he cries and leave him to do exactly what he wants

@RandomMess thanks! He's a darling! And he's come so far in a week!!

Poor old Keith. It would be amazing if you found his original owners.

FredaFrogspawn · 19/09/2020 23:33

So painful to think your beloved dog was stolen then had a hard life.

Veterinari · 19/09/2020 23:33

I'd try him in a sensitive diet - even good old chap pie is usually well tolerated by most dogs.

Is he still in the pain relief OP? Make sure it's always given with food as it can cause irritation of the stomach and if he's vomiting, ring your vets.
Has he been dewormed?

ifonerememberstoturnonthelight · 19/09/2020 23:57

@Veterinari he hasn't been dewormed, he needs it next week the vet wanted to give him a little break between all the treatments. He's probably got 16 years of worms in him which won't help!! I have been giving pain relief on food but it hasn't helped however I need to find a food that doesn't make him sick, he's on Lily's kitchen atm but it's obviously far too Rick for him. He was on bakers dry and butchers wet? So maybe cheap and cheerful is the way to go?

What about feeding him chappie?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 20/09/2020 01:12

Have you tried good old rice and chicken OP? That usually settles my lab's tricksy tummy. Though I suspect you're right and there's worms and all sorts in there. Poor old Keith - latest pics are lovely though!

Pumpkintopf · 20/09/2020 01:39

Soo lovely to see the pics and hear about him playing op, well done you!

LunaNorth · 20/09/2020 10:18

We give ours scrambled egg and plain rice if their tummies are off.

LunaNorth · 20/09/2020 10:19

Love the pics, OP. That little fella must be in heaven.

Mrsjayy · 20/09/2020 10:21

Oh I second chappie. Vet recommended it we had a dog with digestive issues (both ends) and chappie helped her. Or the weeblox packs they are rolled And look like pate those are gentle too. Poor Keith hope you get some thing sorted

spiderlight · 20/09/2020 11:05

Chappie would be my call as well.

TitianaTitsling · 20/09/2020 11:22

Another one in tears here for poor Keith- you are wonderful op for the rescue and nursing him back to health. I was really worried as the initial description of how he was was so similar to our poor dog with neurological probs, but now wondering if he was just so deficient of all the vitamins and minerals he needs?

ifonerememberstoturnonthelight · 20/09/2020 11:39

@TitianaTitsling yes I think so! Going to buy some chappie

I love your updates thank you. It is just so wonderful to know that he is safe and warm, comfortable and getting fed. He's probably not felt this good in such a long time.
One of my dogs used to have a very sensitive tummy and I tried every dog food going but in the end it was the cheapest dog food from our local corner shop that agreed with her.

ifonerememberstoturnonthelight · 20/09/2020 13:10

He took some food from my hand and then licked my hand ! Gah I'm so proud! I know he might have to leave soon but he's doing so well! It upsets me so much that he's had such a shitty life and he's so trusting

OP posts:
spiderlight · 20/09/2020 13:11

Aww - that's amazing! It's a wonderful thing that you're doing. If only he knew how many people love him now and are following his progress every day!

Yeah I'd go with Chappie, it isn't the finest ingredients but it's very digestible and lots of simple carbohydrate/cereal which is actually much more digestible than good quality high protein food.
Good luck
