Rescuing dog on Saturday please help

Hi I'm collecting a dog from our neighbours on Saturday that is in terrible condition. He's 13 ish, cries constantly and bangs into shit in the garden. He lives in a kennel and the rspca is not interested so I'm going to get him on Saturday. Obviously the first thing we need to do is take him to the vet, but he stinks so maybe he'll need a wash first?

He's so passive it makes me so sad, he's never been for a walk and it's only now we're able to talk to the neighbour about maybe giving him up.

Do we keep him away from our other dog? And he's never been inside so how do we transition him? I'm not a green dog owner but I've never actually picked a dog up away from its neglectful owners before.

Just popped in for an update, my heart is breaking for Keith and for you, really hoping for positive news from the Vet but essentially you must do what is right for that little chap, he must feel dreadful as no dog likes to be incontinent. You have given him love, warmth and cherished him in his last days, I’m really hoping for good news but whatever the outcome Keith knows he was loved in the end by you and us, thinking of you today and I know whatever decision is made you are doing it in Keith’s best interests and we are all here for you xx

Glenthebattleostrich · 25/09/2020 09:31

Hope beautiful Keith is ok today and it goes as well as it can at the vets.

Also hope your neighbour gets a vicious disease and has noone to help them and they really suffer.

userxx · 25/09/2020 13:18

Poor little fella. I'm gutted, I know I dont know him but as a BT owner he's stolen a little bit of my heart.

Beamur · 25/09/2020 13:21

Poor old soul.
My old dog has bouts of vestibular disease which is not uncommon in old dogs. First time it happened I thought she was having a stroke, she was stumbling and walking in circles. One time she had quite a bad onset and was also sick and toileted on the floor. But, if it is that, they do often recover to a greater or lesser degree. My dog gets better between episodes but her head is held on a tilt and she can't always tell exactly where things are. This can also make her quite distressed and she's much happier when she's around people. Poor Keith hasn't had much to comfort him has he, perhaps that has created the odd behaviour around bedding.

MotherofTerriers · 25/09/2020 13:26

I have an elderly border, I thought she had a stroke, she was leaning to one side, but she recovered and is fine now. It was vestibular disease. She's doing fine now, nearly 16.

tattychicken · 25/09/2020 16:17

I've seen street dogs abroad do that scrapey thing, trying to pull together any grass and leaves or soft earth to make a bed that is slightly less uncomfortable bed than the hard floor.

Oh no poor wee man. This thread has been lovely to follow and I hope Keith is okay. I think of you guys quite a bit x

EvilPea · 25/09/2020 18:46

Oh Keith. Cake

Whatever happens with the poor mite, his last home was warm, His tummy full and it was filled with love.

@ifonerememberstoturnonthelight you’ve done a lovely thing heres hoping he’s with you for a long time.

ifonerememberstoturnonthelight · 25/09/2020 19:58

Keith is at peace. :( took a piece of me with me with him. The vet said he was in pain and he had a thickening in his stomach that she couldn't rule out was cancerous and was the reason he had been sick constantly. Probably spread from the lump on his bum and maybe had spread to his brain too. Poor little sausage. I hope He liked his 2 weeks with us, I wish I could have done more for him.

Oh no!

Poor Keith. You were his angel. Oh bless him and bless you.

Ginsmything · 25/09/2020 20:09

I think you have done an amazing thing rescuing Keith and giving him some love and care in his last days. BTs are such a lovely breed it’s a shame he wasn’t given the home he should have had for his whole life but at least in the end he was somewhere where he was wanted Flowers

Sforsh49 · 25/09/2020 20:10

Oh OP, his final two weeks were filled with love and care. As a Border owner I can't thank you enough for what you did for him. You truly have a kind heart. Keith will be watching you from Rainbow Bridge with love x

Bonkersblond · 25/09/2020 20:10

There’s a star shining very brightly tonight, one I’ll be looking out for, I think Keith has taken a little bit of all our hearts, I’m so very sorry, he really is at peace now, RIP Keith Flowers

LunaNorth · 25/09/2020 20:18

This is my recently-departed old boy, Theo. I’m sure he’ll make Keith very welcome over the rainbow bridge. He was a friend to everyone.

Thank you everyone. It was a bit surreal really because they had to put him to sleep outside on a blanket with a long line so they could socially distance. And there was a family that was having a fucking picnic on the grass near us HmmConfused the vet is a stand alone building and they had pulled in to sort their car out and decided to get out and have a Burger King on the grass next to us.

More fool them as it will cost them £100 for parking there and not being a customer.

I’m so sad to read that Keith has gone. I have been checking in regularly to see how he was doing.
He finally knew love and kindness because of you OP, you have been absolutely wonderful. He was a lovely boy.

Rest in peace beautiful boy. ❤️

magicstar1 · 25/09/2020 20:47

Aww poor Keith. I’m glad he had a couple of happy weeks with you.
This is our girl...she’s 5 and was rescued from a breeder a few months ago. We’ve had her 6 weeks and absolutely adore her

That's sad. But he had comfort and care and his pain was not left untreated.
Here's a pic of my old girl in solidarity.
