Adopting an old boy - am I crazy?

Have been toying with the idea of dog ownership ever since I settled in a new country 4 years ago.

I grew up with dogs, spent a lot of my 20s working on farms around the world, and recently moved into a rental, alone, in a pretty rural area in Spain. Now feels like it might be 'the time'.

If I go ahead with getting a pooch, I want it to be an adoption - and I'm not bothered about having a 'cute puppy'. Perfectly happy to skip that (and the teenager stage, and the chewing, and the toilet training, etc.) and just focus on settling an adult dog into their new home and building a relationship.

And now I've seen an old fellow. He's 10, but in good health. Chilled, well-behaved, gets on with other animals, happy in cars, walks well on a leash, great recall... and he looks like he probably drinks whisky, plays a mean game of cards and has some stories to tell.

Not going to lie, he seems too good to be true.

I've sent the refuge a message to find out more, but taking a step back for a second, am I being ridiculous here?

Am I setting myself up to fall madly in love with a hound I'm probably going to lose within a few years?

What are the sensible questions I should be asking myself before I let the love-mist set in completely?

I would of course get pet insurance and make sure vet bills etc. were covered, but what else should I consider before I think about committing to an OAP?

Both me and one of my friends have adopted older dogs. Mine is about 8 or 9. Hers is 10 or 11. Weve both said we would go for an older dog again. So chilled out. Perfect really.
I know what you mean about worrying you might only get a few years, but imo its still worth it.

Parkandride · 24/04/2020 22:12

Well this just bought a tear to my eye. I wanted a dog in the 1-5 age range and got a 7 year old, obviously I want years and years with him but any time is worth it. please keep us updated.

@Parsley1234 here you go.

Oh lord I think I might be adopting a dog...

I think maybe asking a board full of dog lovers if I should adopt a dog was setting myself up for biased responses, but I like what you're all saying

He is fabulous. You sound made for each other!

Geometricprince · 24/04/2020 22:18

He's beautiful op, really lovely. It's meant to be!

Windyatthebeach · 24/04/2020 22:18

Oh my days he is absolutely gorgeous op!!
Has he a name already?

batvixen123 · 24/04/2020 22:18

Oh my god. He's gorgeous.

ladybee28 · 24/04/2020 22:20

@Branleuse absolutely. It just makes more sense to me. As @Sarahlou63 said upthread, the old ones are the real heartbreakers, and while puppies are adorable and have that yummy biscuit-smell, they're also tiny little devils!

I just don't think I'm up for dealing with all of that when there are classy old cigarboxes like this guy out there.

Thisismytimetoshine · 24/04/2020 22:20

Oh, you've got to have him, he's an absolute dote!

ladybee28 · 24/04/2020 22:23

He is gorgeous, isn't he? Those big white eyebrows - and his 60s sideburns! Grin Anyone care to hazard a guess at what flavour pooch he is?

@BoreOfWhabylon I don't think he's an Andalusian - he looks too fluffy - but who knows?

😍

AmelieTaylor · 24/04/2020 22:25

Jesus, he's huge!!!

Am I setting myself up to fall madly in love with a hound I'm probably going to lose within a few years?”

Almost certainly. But as someone else said 'better to have loved & lost than never to have loved at all'

What's his name?

What does your partner think?

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 24/04/2020 22:25

Oh windy

Love yours too 😍

BoreOfWhabylon · 24/04/2020 22:28

Whatever he is, he's gorgeous!

Sarahlou63 · 24/04/2020 22:29

Old dogs are wonderful - this is 13 year old Jack (one of our 7!)

@Windyatthebeach look at those giant paws! S/he's adorable! Grin How old?

His name's Morgan... which I'm really not a fan of for him, but maybe if I just imagine him speaking with the voice of Morgan Freeman it'll make more sense...

@AmelieTaylor he really is, isn't he?! Massive boy. My partner is the anchor in our relationship - the steady, logical one – and he took one look and said "That's your dog." Which was so out of character I immediately got suspicious and worried and came on here to consult all of you! I told him I needed to take it one step at a time, and he said "Yes, but follow your heart. And your heart is a good heart, so listen to it." And then I cried. I do that.

DP has a 6 year old labrador who gets on with other dogs really well, and according to the refuge this guy's super-chilled with other dogs, so it should be ok. Without giving too much away, for geographical reasons we won't be able to introduce him to my partner's dog before he comes home with me, so that's the only gamble. But I think there's a very low chance of there being an issue there.

If you have Instagram you need to follow Wolfgang2242. Its a guy named Steve who has adopted about 10 senior dogs (and a pig, a turkey and various other creatures) I love his posts and has made me think about adopting an older pet when the time comes 😍

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 24/04/2020 22:38

Oh my he is adorable, he looks a very laid back chilled kind of guy!

Boswello · 24/04/2020 22:40

I think he's a grande podengo and I think he's yours. He won't likely do hour long walks for long but so what.

ladybee28 · 24/04/2020 22:41

@Sarahlou63 Jack's adorable! Is that ALL Jack in the bed, or is that big puff of extra fluff to the side someone else?

OP posts:
ladybee28 · 24/04/2020 22:44

@Boswello I just googled grande podengo and I think you must be right! They don't look as big as he seems, but who knows... maybe he's got a bit of lion in him or something Grin

Sarahlou63 · 24/04/2020 22:47

Podengo’s are wonderful Portuguese dogs - didn’t know that got THAT big!
