How many of you share your bed space with your pooch?

No. He isn’t allowed upstairs. He sleeps in a crate in the kitchen. Upstairs is the cat’s private sanctuary

FirenzeArno · 01/12/2019 14:40

@LittleLongDog Can't speak for @ohmygod124 but our dog in the kitchen gets more attention there than she would anywhere else in the house. We spend most of our time out there anyway and rarely use our living room. She lets us know when she wants outside for a run about. The rest of the time she runs around the kitchen, either playing fetch or tug o war with us or with her chew toys by herself. Then when she gets very sleepy in the evenings after 10pm or so she'll not so subtly let us know she wants us to leave! I think it all depends on the household really whether that works for people and their pets or not. It definitely works for us.

confusedandemployed · 01/12/2019 14:50

No. Never. He has certainly not spent nearly every night of his 17.5 years in bed with me, oh no.

Agree with PP. Dogs are social animals, being confined to one room of the house sounds like a bleak and miserable existence for the poor beast.

Yes.. she even snuggles her ikea toy to sleep Blush

QueenOfOversharing · 01/12/2019 15:49

@adaline thing is, I know 3 people who got them as puppies & first dogs and gave them up at 18 months, BUT they all live in London & their idea of dog ownership involved the dogs being left a lot.

They are brilliant dogs, but yeah, do a bit of research & don't ask ppl who really don't know!!

QueenOfOversharing · 01/12/2019 15:50

@GrouchyKiwi omg she is absolutely beautiful! Yeah, sorry I can see how the nappy isn't working for her. Haha!

They have the weirdest quirks, don't they? Just adorable.

IratusCats · 01/12/2019 16:07

No, they're not allowed upstairs either 🤷🏻‍♀️ they can roam between the kitchen, extension, hallway and utility room.

Pippastrelle · 01/12/2019 17:39

Our pup is part of the family, being a little JRT she isn't really a problem sleeping in our bed. Some horror stories of dogs being stolen in burglaries always makes me thankful that she sleeps with us both! When she was a pup, she slept in a crate on the bedside table. This worked for months, until she was poorly one night and was cold and shivering. We put her on between us and it hasn't ever changed. She has her own bed on top of our bed (it's a super king bed) and generally she sleeps in that on top of ours. Dog's are absolute gifts!!

@Ohmygod123 dogs will only become possessive if badly trained and/or there are no rules! I do feel extremely sorry for your dog. It does sound like you dislike it....
I genuinely can't understand your approach. Just rehome her. 😢

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 01/12/2019 19:53

Our Labrador isn't allowed upstairs. Partly because it's carpeted and she sheds a lot. Mostly because the breeder warned us that stairs are particularly bad for Labradors joints and to minimise her climbing them. She sleeps in the laundry with access to the backyard through a doggy door. She joins us in the house after her breakfast.

CaptainCabinets · 02/12/2019 16:25

Of course not Wink

fastliving · 02/12/2019 16:42

My current one does (she's a rescue and cried every night until I gave in.

The rules are:

  1. Don't wake me up
  2. Don't fart or snore
  3. Don't smell or shed
  4. Don't move
She abides by all the rules and therefore she stays Smile
adaline · 02/12/2019 16:43

@QueenOfOversharing oh yes, you definitely need to put the work in - I can see why people struggle too. Ours is nearly two and just starting to calm down, but oh my God between 9-18 months he was so challenging!

But I'd read all about beagle adolescence and had joined plenty of breed groups on Facebook so I knew what I was letting myself in for!

hiredandsqueak · 02/12/2019 16:50

No, Bella isn't allowed upstairs. I'm a terrible sleeper so would wake if she moved or snored so she sleeps on her cushion on the sofa ignoring the lovely comfortable dog bed that she has.

Hovverry · 06/12/2019 08:02

I share with dog under the duvet, big cat on my pillow and little cat wandering around all night wanting to play. It’s very cosy.

koshkat · 06/12/2019 17:24

Yes. Two of them and we both love having them with us!

koshkat · 06/12/2019 17:28

My dogs not even allowed in the house. She stays In the kitchen next to radiator on a nice bed. I've got 2 young children so rather not risk it, especially when some dogs can get possessive of things if they are let to sleep on them... Like beds!! also very unhygienic to have hairs everywhere and all over your bed!

This post really upset me. You clearly have very limited knowledge of dog behaviour. Poor bloody dog. You may not want her on your bed but FGS...Sad

Afternooninthepark · 06/12/2019 18:36

Koshkat I agree with you there, if a dog can’t be a member of the family then it should go to live with someone who can really appreciate how a dog is a pack animal and we are their pack, to shove them outside on their own is very cruel imo.

bengalcat · 06/12/2019 18:39

Yes but I loathe the hairs she leaves - Labrador whippet x - she’s curls up really small though and doesn’t get up until one of us does

autumndreaming · 06/12/2019 18:42

Tbh I think it's pretty disgusting, you wouldn't go to bed with your shoes on would you? The bottom of their paws have exactly the same on the bottom - traces of dog shit, rain, mud, dropped food and drink, grass, insects etc.... not to mention that this is also all over their snouts. I love my dog but why anyone would let the above in their bed is completely beyond meEnvy

koshkat · 06/12/2019 19:14

Never mind autumn - we are not all the same.

heatseeker14 · 06/12/2019 19:23

I wouldn’t wear shoes in bed because it would be uncomfortable. I’m sure having a warm dog to cuddle up to must be very comforting. I don’t think it’s disgusting, unless you don’t wipe your dog at all or there is some sheet licking involved 😂

koshkat · 06/12/2019 19:34

It is really VERY comforting. Nothing like a morning snuggle!

fastliving · 07/12/2019 06:29

I do agree with you autumn but if you really thought about how gross dogs are, you wouldn't have one at all!

I change my sheets very regularly (not going to say how often as I know that is a flash point subject on MN Grin) and my cat has slept in my bed for years so my immune system is pretty robust.

BiteyShark · 07/12/2019 06:40

Having had over 2 years of no dogs on our bed rule and less than 1 year with him on the bed I can see both sides. I never thought I would be one of those people who let dogs do that but now I have I would never go back.

The comfort and joy of having a dog sleep close to you is so nice I think the benefits are way more than the downsides. They have such short lifespan that I just want to get as much joy from him as I can and he wants to be leaning against us at night.

Pulpfiction1 · 07/12/2019 06:43

He did when he was a pup but not now. He pops in to check in us through the night though.
