Aibu to get a puppy cavachon?

A friend of my aunt has a litter of cavachon puppies. She has both of the parent dogs. Our boys have been begging us for a dog for years (12,9&5). I had a King Charles growing up, my mum currently has a bijon frise. Aibu to ask the drawbacks of having a cavachon (and first dog for the boys?) I am a sahm so would be home most days. Also the dog is bright red- is that unusual for a cavachon?

“Why do others care what kind of puppy someone chooses to buy?”

Because it’s not an individual thing, it’s part of a much wider picture of health and welfare issues for dogs.

And on an individual level, if someone says they want/need certain traits, a cross is less likely to produce those traits because a cross is less predictable.

**Decent breeders will make you sign a contract that states the puppy must be returned to them if they want to rehome. There will also be endorsements that prevent you from breeding.

Breeders of crossbreeds won't do this.**

@professormoody my golden doodle pup has exactly this. Both parents health tested and seen several times before collection.

I felt reassured by this. We’re in contact with the breeder and other families from the same litter too which is great.

I was very pleased with the nature of our puppy’s breeding. We did have to search for over a year to find her though.

Because it's not just one dog, is it? The rise in popularity of "designer crosses" means that more and more dogs are being born in horrific conditions on puppy farms, and why would anyone who cares about dogs want that to happen?

The existence of puppy farms also puts pressure on rescues because it means anyone can go and get a dog. You just need cash and you can turn up and walk away with a puppy the same day. So many threads here about people who've gotten puppies and not realised how much effort's involved, and have wanted to rehome them 2-3 weeks later. Of course buying from a breeder/rescuing doesn't eliminate that completely, but if you've spent months being quizzed by a breeder as to your suitability, you're more likely to realise getting a dog is wrong for you before you bring it home.

cavachon/cavapoo dogs are very placid and good natured, my cavapoo is a sweetheart! I bought from local breeder and viewed the mum, dad and litter in their home/garden which is preferable to a larger organisation or puppy farm. Absolutely no health problems, no moulting, no worries about the safety of my kids. I’m glad we got our dog as he brings a lot of happiness and is very much loved.

Still from a backyard breeder though. If that's the dog you wanted and you are happy with it, that's what matters, but no need to justify that it was still the product of a BYB. I personally don't support BYB or puppy farms myself. But many do which is why they're still in business. Where I am a BYB or puppy farm charges thousands per dog, often more than a pure bred dog that has had health checks and abides by their breed association guidelines. They're completely in it for the money but they won't admit that if you ask, they'll show you a nice home and yard with their sparkling dogs and promise you anything they know you want to hear about their upbringing and the fact their cross breeds only include the very best of both breeds.

At the end of the day the buyer/owner needs to be happy with their choice.
