welcome Bramley.
We fostered too, until we fostered steppedog, and he sort of stayed Grin

lethargy, I wouldn't worry much. To be honest if I had a decent sunbed it would be in the shade under my tree and I would be asleep on it!

Heat stroke is the thing, I think that excessive panting, and tongue going dark are the warning signs, but I'm no expert. Make sure they have shade and water, and let them flop

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 07/07/2018 14:46

Cocodog has definetly slowed down over the past couple of weeks especially on walks BUT still wants to chase her football before supper regardless of sun..., teeming rain, snow and possibly an earthquake😬

BiteyShark · 07/07/2018 15:18

I thought BiteyDog was quite intelligent considering he's a working breed but clearly he isn't. Bloody dog has been demanding ball play all day and sulking because I won't let him collapse with heat exhaustion. I was happily dozing on the sofa and even then he jumped up and pushed his nose right in my face to wake me up to play Angry

PestDog would run over hot lava if I chucked a tennis ball in that direction - and he'd do it twice.

I, however, have found an alternative use for the ball chucker in this weather. It's currently doing a sterling job propping up my dodgy sash window Grin

Squirrel26 · 07/07/2018 21:01

Apparently numpty SquirrelDog couldn’t possibly take a day off patrolling the house and garden/ running up and down the stairs/ wrestling with Mr Flat Squeaky Alien just because it’s approximately 300 degrees Hmm.

I’ve stuffed some lamb treats, peanut butter and cheese in a half-chewed bone, so at least he’s currently almost lying still while he works on it...

Bramleyapples · 07/07/2018 21:22

Thank you! I've only had a her a few weeks so it's hard to tell what's normal for her, but before it was so hot she had loads of mad puppy spells! She's currently chewing a toy in the garden looking much perkier but she was sick earlier after eating grass... I'll keep an eye.

I suppose I should count my blessings because she would let me nap all day if I wanted to!

BiteyShark · 08/07/2018 07:36

Love is getting up at 6am on a Sunday morning to play ball with the dog before it's too hot neighbours are up before us so no worries about that

Will I think it will stop him pestering me in the heat? No? But at least I won't feel as guilty Grin

OP posts:
Squirrel26 · 08/07/2018 09:00

It doesn’t feel quite so hot here this morning. We’re having a slow start - tried to sleep with the windows open but that was too noisey, then tried to sleep with them shut and that was too hot Hmm. Think we will go down to local nature reserve - lots of trees and a river for splashing in and a handy nearby cafe where I can get a massive coffee.

BiteyShark · 08/07/2018 09:06

Wish it felt cooler here but it's bloody hot now Sad

Enjoy your coffee Grin

So turns out she's just decided the best way to cope with the heat is to be nocturnal Hmm

We put up the paddling pool thinking she might like to cool down but she's terrified of it and won't go near it! Hope yours enjoyed the river squirrel!!

BiteyShark · 08/07/2018 15:29

Bramley We had something similar with BiteyDog a few nights back when he wanted to play ball Shock. Had to send him back to his bed several times. Fortunately it was a one off.

BiteyDog thinks his paddling pool is a gigantic water bowel for drinking from. I tend to use a watering can to cool his paws as he likes drinking out of it when I am pouring the water on him Grin

steppedog is in disgrace.

he ate one of our chickens last night. Found a hole in the fence and dived through. While we were sitting outside eating dinner 20 feet away. fortunately it was the bossy bully chicken that was pain cure hysterics from dds.

we knew there was a small hole. Dh had just pruned the bush next to it, inside the run, but apparently it is pure coincidence that he chopped the bush down, and steppedog managed to push through the small hole and make a large hole Hmm

BiteyShark · 09/07/2018 10:00

Oh no steppe that sounds horrible for everyone Sad

OP posts:
TropicPlunder · 09/07/2018 10:09

Sorry Steppe that sounds unpleasant. My dog had a thing against one of my several chickens, and we rehomed that one, as she would catch and play with it (plucking feathers). She lives free range with the other free range chickens now and they're doing great together. Has steppedog shown interest in the chickens before? Or it was an opportunistic thing?

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 09/07/2018 10:10

Mine are in kennels atm and I’m missing them so it’s nice to read all your posts
Sorry to hear about your chicken steppemum luckily mine don’t bother our chickens

Squirrel26 · 09/07/2018 10:50

Oh dear Steppedog Shock
It really bloody annoying that they can ALWAYS find the one small hole in miles and miles of fencing, isn’t it? It’s like there is a massive flashing sign that’s only visible to dogs.

BiteyShark · 09/07/2018 12:34

YouveCatToBeKittenMe are you somewhere nice on holiday?

OP posts:
AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 09/07/2018 12:45

Oh no @Steppe :( That sounds traumatic for all concerned.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 09/07/2018 13:15

A dog owning friend told me the other day that if she ever has children she's going to clicker train them.

I can't help but feel she's onto something Grin

steppemum · 09/07/2018 13:19

well, I am philosophical. at least it was annoying chicken, not very cure pom-pom headed pet chicken.

She was the best layer though.

Steppedog does unfortunately have a fixation on the chickens, the first month we had him, we quickly realised we needed to walk him on a lead in the garden until dh rebuilt the chicken run with high sturdy fencing. he does still run up and down outside getting over excited.
But he is a springer which are genetically programmed to chase birds, so I can't really complain.

steppemum · 09/07/2018 13:19

very CUTE that should say

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 09/07/2018 13:53

FWIW I have a ratting breed terrier x and a couple of small rat-esque furries. I dealt with the issue by
a) putting them in cages off the floor to obscure his vision (though he can still see them when they come to the front of the cages). Perhaps you could put up something to obscure Steppedog's vision.
b) immediate 2 minute time outs every time he made some attempt at chasing them

Much to my surprise, he seems to have got the message - we haven't (touch wood) had a chasing incident for at least two months. He'll still chase rats etc. if he sees them in the park, but he seems to have got the message at home.

That said, I'm not a dog trainer - so don't take my anecdote too seriously!

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 09/07/2018 17:35

@BiteyShark We’re near Cork, Ireland
It’s very hot and sunny today
Apparently it’s not usually like this! Never been to Ireland before, it’s lovely!

BiteyShark · 09/07/2018 17:44

I went to cork many years ago. Lovely place but takes you ages to drive anywhere Grin

OP posts:
steppemum · 09/07/2018 17:48

Ireland is supposed to be damp and green isn't it Grin
My Irish friend used to say - It's not raining, it's just that the wind is wet....
