help.
Steppedog is crawling with fleas.
I did his flea treatment with vet stuff less than 2 weeks ago.

What can I use on him now? I can't do the same again can I?

ds complained last night that there were fleas in his bed (steppedog sleeps on it), and this morning he rolled over and I could see lots of fleas crawling round in his tummy hair!!

vet stuff was prinovox given on 9th June

If it was the cat, I would flea comb him to get a load off, but not sure that I can flea comb a good sized dog with curly hair!

BiteyShark · 23/06/2018 11:17

I wouldn't expect you can treat again so soon. Mine needs the fleas to bite him and then they die. Is it possible that you have just had some eggs hatch and thus they haven't had time to bite and die?

OP posts:
steppemum · 23/06/2018 11:34

hmm, maybe, they look pretty big though.

I am guessing he got them running through the long grass, which he loves to do.

I have to do something, he is really crawling.
Maybe the vet stuff didn't work. I know I had to try a couple of different ones with the cat

BiteyShark · 23/06/2018 11:45

Is your vet open today to ask them what else you can use that is not contraindicated with your previous treatment?

OP posts:
steppemum · 23/06/2018 12:37

so, I phoned the vet.
hmm.
The fleas will bite him and die. Then new ones will hatch, jump on him, bite him and die.

I can't do anything except comb him. I need to treat the house more.

She was very helpful, but not very satisfactory conclusion, he is crawling, ds bedroom is crawling, and I can treat the bedroom and keep the dog out, but I can't do anything to remove the fleas from the dog.

sigh.

I think I will try and comb

BiteyShark · 23/06/2018 12:42

I can see the logic in that it takes a while for the cycle to work and the dog is actually the one that can kill them.

However, I remember moving into a house which had a flea infestation and it was bloody awful being bit all the time until we got pest control in so you have my sympathies.

I would google the life cycle of fleas and if you don't see an improvement in that time back to the vets for different treatment.

tabulahrasa · 23/06/2018 13:37

You want to use indorex in the house as well though... anywhere he sleeps or spends time.

That kills all the ones hanging about.

steppemum · 23/06/2018 14:05

I did wash EVERYTHING when I fleaed him. I didn't spray the carpets, with the cat I usually find washing their bedding is enough. obviously not with a dog.

I just combed half a dozen off him, but I think that probably means I have 10%!

Have house spray. with re-wash and spray house, this pm or tomorrow.
sigh

BiteyShark · 23/06/2018 14:32

Oh steppe that isn't what you want to be doing on a sunny weekend.

Squirrel26 · 23/06/2018 17:02

Oh yuck. SquirrelDog has a Soresto(?) collar - relatively expensive, but they last ages and I haven't seen any fleas and only one tick (fingers crossed) so far this year.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 23/06/2018 20:07

Cocodog is due a dose of Bravecto, I have been on the fence because she is always lethargic and off after a dose But after hearing of steppedog woes shall give it to her, unless someone can come up with another idea. She has never had fleas yet !,

Wolfiefan · 23/06/2018 20:12

I don't know privinox
We use nexgard and I've never seen a flea. It's becoming hard to get hold off though and I won't use Bravecto. I'm thinking the collar may be the way to go. Is it stinky? Do you need to wash hands if you touch it? Wolfie is very tactile and loves her cuddles.
Have you indorexed the house?

BiteyShark · 23/06/2018 20:14

We use nexgard spectra tablet for fleas, worms and ticks every month and have had no issues although that doesn't mean it won't affect cocodog.

Haven't used bravecto but didn't get on with advocate as the smell would make him hyper and he wouldn't sleep.

BiteyShark · 23/06/2018 20:15

Wolfie my vet said this week that stock restrictions had been lifted for Nexgard spectra so I got my 6 months worth just fine Grin

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 23/06/2018 20:16

That's the one Bitey but we have serious supply issues and vets aren't stocking it any more. The only reason I still have some is we are using up their stocks for massive dogs.

Wolfiefan · 23/06/2018 20:16

Hoping they have some next time we run low! I think they are just fed up of struggling to get stock and would rather use Bravecto. I don't want to!

BiteyShark · 23/06/2018 20:22

Wolfie Stocks are definitely back because I noticed that vetuk.co.uk also have it back in stock for most dog sizes and my vet said they had been rationed by the manufacture but they removed that restriction.

If your vet doesn't want to stock it anymore perhaps they will write you a prescription and you could buy it online? Pain in the arse if you normally have it included in a vets plan but we like it that much I think I would be tempted to pay the cost on top.

Wolfiefan · 23/06/2018 20:24

Me too. I hate the spot ons. Too messy for a 50kg+ dog. And I don't want to try Bravecto (she's reacted to food badly and I don't want to risk it). Nexgard spectra has been awesome. Never seen a tick or flea, she takes them nicely and no adverse reactions at all.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 23/06/2018 20:45

Thanks, will be asking my vet about nexgard spectra versus Bravecto .

Wolfiefan · 23/06/2018 20:53

It just depends what suits different dogs. Lots use Bravecto with no issues at all. Just with an allergy prone dog I would rather stick to a known drug. Good luck.

steppemum · 23/06/2018 21:07

He came with a brand new very expensive flea collar (the rescue said it had been donated, and they cost about £35)

Trouble is, when steppedog rolls in fox poo or a cow pat, I have to put his collar and harness through the wash. If you put a flea collar through the wash it becomes ineffective. So no good for us.

Squirrel26 · 24/06/2018 08:24

SquirrelDog's collar doesn't smell at all, and according to the leaflet you don't need to avoid touching it. He's not particularly a roller, so his hasn't got dirty. I don't know how you'd get round that Sad.

In other news, we were out all yesterday afternoon and evening with an assortment of dog and human friends. It's looking like I'm going to have to wake SquirrelDog up and drag him out for his walk Grin.

BiteyShark · 24/06/2018 08:44

I think the soresto collar didn't work for us because BiteyDog was always wet (swimming or needed rinsing). I know others swear by it though.

I had to bath madam yesterday.

She was off her lead and came when I called. She came up happy as anything. I reached down to pet her and felt something wet.

I don't know what she rolled in but my god it reeked!!

I stood outside with her whilst a bath was being run and you could smell it through the kitchen even with us being out EnvyEnvy

Ive had to wash her harness and everything

She was gutted to lose her new perfume.

Bright side, she smell so gorgeous today
