I had our male lab puppy castrated last thurs. came home fine but 2 days after he can’t keep food down. The runs and sickness. Was better yesterday and was eating little and often but he just been in garden after drinking water and been sick again. I’m exhausted. Been sleeping in lounge since Thursday now. Please help. I’m also new to this group x

I’ve also tried sensitive dog food and got medicine from vets. Binding tube for the runs. Finished that. Can it be the opp that’s caused this? I’ve watched him since opp and he’s not eAten anything he shouldn’t have?

Sorry to hear this!

It sounds as if you need to go back to the Vet.
It might just be a virus - they do pick them up in the same way that humans do. However - it should be checked out.

When ours are ill we are careful not to overload their insides. We give them boiled water that has been made into ice-cubes. (This is clean and they can't consume it too fast.) If all goes well with this - we allow them boiled rice/cooked egg - in small quantities. They usually move back to normal dog food diets quite quickly once the the rice is staying down.

How old is your pup? Many vets now don't recommend neutering dogs until they've gone through puberty as the hormones are needed for growth and maturing. It's quite normal for them to be sick and have runs for maybe 48 hours, but a week is a bit much.

How is he in himself? If he's happy enough I'd give him some soft boiled chicken and maybe some probiotic yoghurt. His body is probably trying to get rid of the medication from the vet or he's picked up a bug.

Was he given Metacam for pain relief? If so, stop it immediately (it states this on the box) as diarrhoea is a known side effect.

Also changing foods suddenly won't help. Food changes should always be made slowly.

He’s not on any pain relief now. He had it the first morning but that was it. Got some sensitivity food from vet and they gave me binding paste after his first lot of runs. He’s just been out in garden again - I’ve had no sleep 😨. He comes in and then licks his paws over and over? Will phone the vets -

Oh he’s ok in himself but not boarding around. Been for a few tiny walks but he’s not pulling on the lead. Quiet and fed up I’d say (bit like me!)

Repeatedly licking paws is a typical sign of an allergy, usually to food. Many dogs are allergic to the grains and chemicals in commercial dog food.Vets love to sell you "special" dog food and when the allergy continues the next step is doggy steroids which are really damaging and simply mask the problem.

I really recommend you watch the documentary PetFooled on Netflix and consider a natural raw diet for him.

But he was fine and healthy before his castration. Surely it’s due to that/surgery/infection.

It can be a sign of stress/discomfort Harry, but without seeing the behaviourist first hand it's hard to tell (mine licks her foreleg when she's not feeling well)

That’s right. Why on earth would vets want to utilise their 5 years of extensive training when in actuality they all harbour a burning desire to be pet-food sales people ConfusedHmm

I would be very surprised if his surgery went wrong and the vet probably checked him for infection.I presume his stitches look ok. The change of food sounds like the likely culprit along with the painkillers and surgery medication.

Pop him down tomorrow if you are still worried. My vet will chat things over on the phone if I'm concerned.

Stitches are all good. Thank you. Am on countdown TIL 8am. Just read kidney stuff and panicked myself! This is our first dog so all new and tiring.

Do you have any medical knowledge on which to base that Terf if so i’m surprised you overlooked the risk of renal insufficiency following a drop in BP during surgery. But then what would I know - i’n Just a qualified Vet. You’ve clearly read some random websites and it’s nice to see that you’re so confident in your expounding your ‘expertise’ despite quite clearly having no basis for you confidence.

Of course they do - as part of a holistic approach with a wide variety of other products. To imply that they sell pet food in order to jeopardise the health and welfare of their patients is quite frankly laughable. Along with your claims of ‘many dogs’ being allergic to grains and chemicals.

However you clearly have an agenda and its nice to see you aren’t letting your ignorance get in the way of giving ‘advice’ regardless of how harmful it might be.

Don’t panic Harry it is unlikely but with the timing and symptoms i’d Want to rule it out. Hopefully just a coincidental tummy upset that has him feeling under the weather.

Sorry for the derailing - it’s just frustrating to see posters who feel that their need to give advice is paramount - regardless of their own ignorance or the dangers they might create.

What I am surprised about is that the op seems to have no knowledge of the risks of this when deciding to spay or not. I think that's quite shocking. Don't you? Either way the pup has been seen by a vet and presumably that vet has ruled it out.

You don't think that some dogs are allergic to grains?The public really are being fooled then with all the grain free specialized dog food.
